  • If you want a Koine Greek Grammar that will be suitable for beginning Greek, intermediate greek, which is up to date, and linguistically informed, then this grammar is worth serious consideration. Like many intermediate greek grammars it includes a good discussion of syntax. However, this grammar differentiates itself by covering a number of other areas not well covered in intermediate grammars, including phonology, morphology and discourse analysis. In fact, this might be the only reference greek grammar you need!

    How about Swetnam’s 2 volume 800p introduction to New Testament Greek 1998. Fr James is retired but still alive.

    I am enjoying reading this. I have only got to the morphology section but as you say, it is nerdy fun. One possible very minor quibble is that the German author translated it into English. It is a principle among translators that you only ever translate into your native language, not out of it. However in this case that may have been necessary because presumably the author had to adapt the book as he went so that it dealt with issues taking into account English grammar relative to Greek rather than German grammar relative to Greek. What a task! I have spotted a few occurrences of Germlish (direct translations of German idioms that no native English speaker would use) which make the book all the more fun to read.

      Thanks, Graham! I didn't pick those up in my read through - but you're probably reading more carefully than me! Thanks for watching!

    I have this book. It does takes a slow read and focus readying to grasp the concepts but is worth it. I am glad you point out the way the indexes circle throughout the sections. This system is a good way to let the book answer your own questions while you are studying and reading. Is not my first grammar but it complements my intermediate grammar very well. The author explain things very nicely. Great review Darryl !

    Unfortunately I cannot find the e-book yet, not in Logos, nor in Scribd. Otherwise it would be too expensive to buy from Asia.

    authors and publishers are missing a significant number of customers by not offering their products in the Bible software platforms . Given the niche audience for these type of reference works it would seem wise to capture as many customers as possible

    Great video Darryl! I was wondering, what would be the best advantage of getting a reference grammar- if you already have other intermediate grammars like Wallace/Mathewson and even Discourse grammars like Runge?

    • @bma
      @bma  Před 3 lety +2

      If you already have those grammars, you don't need to use this one. But if you're writing for an academic journal or for seminary, quoting a grammar like this is better than quoting a beginning Greek grammar!

      @bma  Před 3 lety

      I don’t use the Cambridge grammar, so I’m not sure how it compares. I’ll add it to the list of grammars to review though. I wouldn’t buy another grammar unless you have a specific need - or if you like to collect them. :) thanks for watching!

    What’s more true a greek Bible or Latin?

    • @bma

      Greek. Latin is a translation. Greek is the original (at least in the New Testament)

      I think Swetnam’s covers everything in it 800 pages so can read it and test out of first year Greek at the the Gregorian Pontifical University.
