- Watch a weapon expert react to Elden Ring, and its many weapons! We got Matt Easton, an all-around weapon, HEMA and battle expert, to look at IGN's Game of the Year for 2022, Elden Ring and it's iconic weaponry.
From the Bloodhound Fang, to the Twinned Knight Swords and the Bloodhound Claws, Matt breaks down just how realistic these weapons are, how they're used and what they could be inspired by.
Matt Easton is a Historical European Martial Artist, Antique Arms Dealer, and owner of the fencing club Schola Gladiatoria.

If only they showed him the game actually have Katars.
And Zweihandler !
Knight's Greatsword would also have been a neat thing for him to talk about its moveset.
@@lemmingrad Beautiful moveset that comes all the way from some of Dark Souls 2 greatswords!
For sure. Theyre one of my favorite weapons too.
And actual straight claws that can stab.
The interesting thing about these games is that they very clearly had someone on staff who knew quite a lot about historic weaponry and how it's used, and it's also very clear that that person also spent a lot of time locked in a closet or stoned out of their mind.
Game design comes before realism.
@@aristedes9449 not necessarily, if it is too far removed from reality it breaks immersion.
@@russianbot2630 no it doesnt it depends on the type experience.
That's those of us playing the game too though lol. Stoned out of our mind nerds, you've described the entire fantasy genre lol.
@@russianbot2630 versimilitude is not really gained from strictly adhering to reality, it's gained from staying consistent within your game's vibes.
Should have showed Matt the Zweihander because the moves for it are over the top. Also, there are sabres and katanas which are more in line with what Matt typically talks about. I'd love to hear what he thinks of the Hand of Malenia. There are people on CZcams who pump out tons of videos on Elden Ring weapons and most of them know next to nothing compared to Matt Easton.
To be fair, most people know next to nothing about melee weapons compared to Captain Context. He is in the lucky position of having married his passion and his job.
Yeah the weapon choices and showcases are the only downside to this video. Why show off the twin blade with a greatshield and not it's regular two handed moveset as it's sort of clearly meant to be used? Why not use the Knights great sword which has a hema inspired moveset.
The thrust is great tho
Iirc the knights greatsword/longsword has a particularly dexterous moveset when twohanded.
@@obolisk0430 the DS2 hollowslayer based moveset
His ability to suspend his disbelief in the moment is great.
As a HEMA guy and an Elden Ring enthusiast, it's great to see Matt Easton providing his expertise. Cheers from the US.
didn’t know usa used cheers like that
Why does this guy look like patches? Lmfao
Lmfaoooo 😭🤣💀
How do you know he is not patches?
He’s patches evil twin, ie, a really nice dude
7:05 a legendary Matt Easton context moment.
Matt is always so merciful towards all this nonsense, bless his soul
Just because it wouldn't work in reality doesn't make it necessarily nonsense. It is done for entertainment first, realism second. End of argument.
That and also there do exist an incredible range of really, really weird stuff that actually did get used throughout history, so Matt being the scientifically minded guy that he is understandably doesn't like to dismiss anything out of hand (unless it's just absolutely bonkers).
@@malafakka8530 well some aspects in reality would be nonsense but in game it does have a lot of sense XD
Not all of this is nonsense, dumbass
He used to not be, cool to see him err on the side of fantasy finally
Was always curious what Matt's take on sword play / weapons in soul series would have been
.. . . ... .. . . .. .. . . . b . .
they are mocapped so they're okay, not hema "proper way" but realistically for dude who took weapon, have some training with it and slays zombies and beasts lol
that's my guess
@@favkisnexerade ds2 has better animation but elden ring comes close enough
The brilliant thing about the claws that do indeed lack reach, is that they come with the extremely powerful "bloodhound's step" ability which is basically the ability to "nothing personal" anything you want, as you can teleport straight past someone's attack and get behind them. It's infamous for fans of the game that enjoy pvp, but something to know if you've never played the game. Their lack of reach is actually accounted for with the weapon's special ability.
Now I'm wishing for a pommel throw in souls games just so Matt has to talk about the meme again
Skall would be proud/annoyed.
@@1IGG like a dad begrudgingly admitting defeat to one of his kids
Wasn't it For Honor that had a pommel throw?
@@KickyFut Mordhau had an achievement to "End someone rightly" by throwing the pommel
LetMeEndHerRightly
There is actually a Katar in game (punch dagger) the one he showed literally looks the same you can get it in caelid
7:04 "They would come in and nail you however they wanted"
Even on other channels, Matt can't get away from innuendo lol
Great video, looking forward to the rest of this series
Actually, the longsword thrust seems to coincide directly with the enemy exposing his armpit.
The longsword thrust is actually meant to be an upper chest/neck stab, but in Elden Ring the enemies tend to be taller than in Dark Souls, and its the same animation
more of this pls
Actually the claws have a closer real-world counterpart: the Japanese tekko-kagi claws. From my memory (take this with a grain of salt), they were mostly by ninjas as defensive weapons made to trap and defend from swords. Their use wasn't very widerspread though.
Didn't they also use something similar for scaling walls and cliff faces?
Nah that was proved to be false by some analysis of the only manuscript to mention them. And they had been drawn on in the 1980's. The surviving examples were agricultural tools used to lift up bales of hay. If you used them like wolverine your wrists would break immediately!
That's basically most of the pop culture conception of ninjas, though, right? Based on very little reliable historical data and a lot of modern speculation and mythologizing.
1:22
Funny he mentions that 'cause in the competitive side, spears are actually meta (the go-to that everyone uses)
As someone who mained bloodhound claws this man would be absolutely aghast at watching me fight fire giant, Loretta, Maliketh etc with my 2 inch attack range.
Everything becomes viable with potions
Claw is actually use in China, japan, and many other Asian country. Can't say for the effectiveness but they were use. In fact wolverine claw were inspire by the real life claw weapon.
now imagine a throw and recall feature for the double blade
Hold on… I’ve seen something like that with a double sword before
Oh dang it's Matt Easton! Great to see him here!
Dont mess with Doctor Context
There is a weapon similar to the claws at the end in real life; they are called tekkō-kagi and are likely the inspiration for Wolverine's claws (though I'm not so sure about that curve shape).
Get Matt to do Dark and Dark. Love to see his thoughts on the longsword
Great analysis!
Just have him react to all of them. This is so great.
Great analysis. Love this.
"Favors the roll" oh you sweet summer child
A big issue with the twinned sword also, is the size of the blades themselves
You cant do an overhead strike, with a hilt that small, with a blade that big on the other end, you're going to have to practice trying not to accidently hara kiri yourself
An overhead strike from a weapon that has an identical blade on the other end, would always have to be angled from 1 o'clock to 7 o'clock
If you aim it from the sky to the ground? that other end is going directly into your gut 😂
The game does have a katar, wish he'd have seen it
This guy is AWESOME! Please bring him more! There's a lot more weapons to analyze!
Lets be real, they just wanted to show him the sickle cos they got it to drop.
The katar is actually also a weapon with the same swing style as the bloodhound claws
To Sickle fighting there is a Video from Skallagrim where he went thorugh some of the Sparing Technics with Sickles and tryed them out.
You guys should get this guy to do a breakdown of Kingdom Come Deliverance. I'd love to hear his analysis and expertise on it.
That giant saber reminded how there's still nothing that beats the Doctor Jones technique. It's not flashy, and it's not at all noble, but you can't argue with its results.
When are you going to show this guy Chivalry 2?
7:01 And that is exactly how you fight against that weapon in PvP, lol
Love Matt, glad he's getting more screentime as an expert
Could you make an arm padding or armor that could be used to deflect
Matt Easton is the man
Interesting how he said wielding the great sword in two hands would be more dexterous, as doing that in game doesn't actually improve your dex stat (only strength). Maybe that should be something to consider for future games.
You are always so positive Matt.
Sickles were also used in Japan as weapons, and from the looks of it they were effective against longer weapons by easily being able to move the larger weapons out of your way, so sickles would actually be decent against a sword in the real world
He's actually right that you can't block with the claws in any of these games and equipping them means you have to dodge
The bloodhound claws are intended as a backup weapon to be used with the bloodhound fang, when used together it makes an all around useful set, but alone they seem, out of place.
Awesome video
Bloodhound's Fang, me favourite sword in Elden Ring! Thought bow and spear are me favourites...
Wouldnt mind seeing the tree spear
He's technically the heavy weapons guy
Among the most qualified to commentate.
Cheers Matt.
A duelist sword, top pun
Should have showed him the one that beast clergymen uses
have matt look at some of the armour
Please show him the sword of Night and flame
Can someone link his channel
Wondering if the dev team made mock-up weapons and practiced swinging them in the office?
The kataar is actually in the game
More please.
The helmet in the first clip is actually a mask
There is actually a katar in the game
Bro the tarnished is not a normal human being he’s literally a superhero 😭
rivers of blood katana
Please show him powerstancing
Kind of a shame that they shown a Curved Greatsword instead of a regular Greatsword. That weapon is a weird hybrid that does not reflect the actual Greatsword, which he used to compare it to.
Love patches himself teaching us
"It's unwieldy"
Me, powerstancing Giant crushers: 😐
can this man react to choo choo charles weapons
Nice that’s Patches !
But with more context. Because context context context. Also, context context context.
Swords were like pistols are today, great for self defense when out and about, awful for actual warfare.
Next show him ghizas wheel
When the fantasy game has fantasy weapons 😱
missed opportunity to show him the actual katars
3:50 There exists a video of me in BCT, stabbing a target with an M16A2 bayonet, getting it stuck, and pulling it out by pushing away with my foot.
Spears were abused for a long time in PVP
He looks like a Young Mike from Breaking bad
So Patches teaches sword fighting now
bit of a shame that the twinblade one basically only used an ash of war when 2 handed. shows absolutely nothing of the actual weapon that way.
He should react to Bloodborne weapons, that would be fun
Nitpicking has always been a peeve of mine but somehow Matt your nitpicking doesn't bother me do to yours relating to the history and how the weapon should really be used.
2:09 oh he thinks this game favors the roll... hehe
You should play this a game
Patches! And he’s actually nice this time!
Why did nobody tell him there's Katars in Elden Ring
Think he’s got rkr on that katar of his?
Can't believe they got Patches to review elden ring weapons
Who ever was using the twinned knight swords needs to be told that L2 isn't the only attack button
that was entertaining
Need to show him the Clay(bae)more
I’m no expert but isn’t he forgetting that ninjas used sickles?
katar is in this game
The twined knight sword would be better if you just got rid of one of the blades
Yo is that Patches 😳
Matt looks kinda like Patches
"This game favours the role"
Kid named Finger in his 20s
6:10 what all men want to hear.
It's patches
Imagine IGN showing him footage of someone who can actually play games...
But he's not here to react to how well they do or don't play, he's reacting to the weapon designs.
