  • Enjoy one of the oldest locomotives in regular service, Southern Pacific
    4-6-0 #2248, built in 1895.
You’ll see 2248 as it pulls what at the time was called the “Tarantula Train” (now the Grapevine Vintage Railroad) from Grapevine, Texas
to Fort Worth and back. See the action from trackside, on the train
and in the cab of this fine steam locomotive.

I grew up riding behind 2248, she was the very first steam engine I got to ride behind, and she has a special place in my heart. It's such a damn shame how the city of Grapevine has mistreated her since taking over her operations from the FWWR.

It's cool to see you guys start airing your railroad documentaries as premieres/live streams here on CZcams. The Southern Pacific 4-6-0 #2248 looks impressive. Great job on this home video! I am looking forward to seeing even more of them soon. Keep up the excellent work!

Sorry to be that guy, but the info in the description is wrong. 2248 was actually built by Cooke in 1896, not 1895. (fun fact, she originally carried the number 1829 until being renumbered in.. 1901.? i think? i apologize if that info is incorrect-)

It's rather weird seeing this video now in 2023, where all the area around the track has been developed in some way, including the addition of a commuter rail service that uses the same track as the now-called Grapevine Vintage Railroad.

I have a mouse pad of 2248, and it too is old but I still use it cause it was my first mouse pad I ever owned and it’s of a train ( I love trains). I also have a painting of PERE MARQUETTE 1223 on my wall that I found in hobby lobby of all the places, and a wooden crossing buck that too is hanging on my wall. The only steam trains I ever rode on were the steam trains of tweetsie railroad and the great smoky mountains railroad ( ex-army, WW2 , she never saw action) 2-8-0 , S-160 #1702. Another thing I heard about her when she was on this line is that her original whistle was stolen by vandals wile she was in the shop for here safety inspection. Also the railroads first diesels that they owned were 2 EMD GP-7’s #711 and #777 (both were ex-Chicago and western and had 1500 horsepower and were later modified from high nose to low nose) also 711 had been upgraded to GP-9 specifications which increased its horsepower to 1750 . Both were gonna be scrapped after they gotten to old , but famous CZcamsr Mr.Beast had another idea, he decided to crash the two locos into each other to derail them. I was luck cause they were still cleaning up the wreck and when I found out it was 711 and 777 that were out there I was sad as my first train I rode on that railroad was on ether 711 or 777 😢. Last thing I promised is that both the railroad and these 3 locos were used in movies.
The railroad was in 1 movie (The Fugitive)
777 was also used in the movie “ the fugitive” ( which you can still see the train wreck if your on the train heading to dillsboro).
711 was in the movie “ forces of nature “
and 1702 made a cameo appearance in the 1966 film “ this property is condemned “ and a second cameo appearance in the 1972 movie “boxcar Bertha”. Sorry for the long rant I have adhd and autism and I just love to talk.

Good news is according to a couple of EXTREMELY reliable sources that she is being worked on slowly but surely with restoration to operations in full swing. But they're having to make plans in advance for modern technologies due to the current operations of TexRail.

  • @thecarolinianrailfan8339

#2248 is truly an underrated steamer. I wonder what programs you will be releasing this year…

  • @TexasRailfan21-RailfanRyan

Wow, it’s been a while since I seen this on CZcams thank you very much for re-uploading this I really love this documentary about 2248 which features the locomotive recorded on two different days where she used two different whistles, her original southern pacific 6 chime whistle, and the 5 chime whistle which came from Rock Island 4-6-2 Pacific number 938 which was never restored by the Fort Worth & Western Railroad and I don’t really know the whereabouts of that engine. However, besides the 938 they also had southern pacific Mogul number 1744 and it is come to home rails in Niles California on the Niles Canyon Railroad and restoration is now in for progress but once again, thank you very much for re-uploading this video.

This engine has been out of service for quite some time now due to her FRA-mandated boiler inspection. I know it’s been out for at least 10 years since I rode the GVRR back in 2011 and my parents told me the engine wasn’t in use. Work on the boiler inspection has been halted for a few years last time I checked. Makes me wonder if she’ll ever steam again.
