This was my second year as a Panthers fan. I just turned 10 in 1991 and this win made me a fan of this team and the game of rugby league for life.
I've been a Penrith fan since 1966 and had to hold faith through the whole "chocolate soldiers" era of the 1970s and early 1980s. This day was one of the best days of my life - and still is!

How old are you?
Grew up in Carlingford which is a mix of Parra/Norths/Balmain fans but about 15 of us watched this GF and everyone was going for Penrith. When Geyer the Colossus scored, we went nuts. One of the great GFs imo.
I met almost every single Panther on that team and got their autograph as a 12 year old. Best feeling ever beating the 2 time champs and getting sweet revenge!! Up the Panthers!!
Now 3 time
@J G That's why rugby League is much better than soccer. It's new.
Graeme Hughes was a fantastic commentator.
Good player himself and cricketer too.
32 years later and people still remember the famous green machine. Even though they lost this one, they were unforgettable.
Was watching the 94 Raiders vs Dogs GF and when the Canberra side ran on it was like a who's who of best players in the day. Ridiculous. Arguably the best club side I've seen, 98 Broncos were close too.
They were a great side, Stuart, Daley, Meninga, Lazarus, Clyde, Walters that's half the Kangaroo squad.
Back when high tackles were completely fine 😂
@MUFC oke
Now days every one cries like little girls
@@ShaquilleBarron snowflake generation bro
@@ShaquilleBarron This is what happened when you pay them $1 million dollars a season. They don’t have to try only when they have to extend there contract. Once they get their monies they don’t need to perform
What a brilliant, beautiful day. Will never forget that feeling. Hopefully tomorrow will be just as sweet ! GO DA CHOCY SOLDIERS !
I remember watching this game. I was a Sea Eagles fan, so was neutral. The Raiders did well to hang on for so long with no ball in the 2nd half and walking wounded injured still playing. I was still glad that Penrith finally won their first premiership. They deserved it, even with a slightly favoured draw in the regular season.
Anthony Warlow, what a voice. An Illawarra Legend too.
This grand final will always hurt me.
Try being a tigers fan dealing with 89
The real best ever grand final tackle in this game. 19 year old Freddy on the Australian captain and future immortal Meninga.
I still think 03 was better. A lock forward on a winger.
@@thatboy6532 the lock on a winger aspect is over emphasised when you take the degrees into account, Sattler starting his run earlier and Byrne carrying the ball. The real play from that tackle happened 5 seconds earlier when Freddy picks up that slippery ball and put Byrne away. Amazing hands. Still great tackle, but 19 year old skinny kid on beast like Meninga. Look how many and quality of blokes Meninga bumped off in same situation.
You must not of seen the Steve Simpson tackle in the 2001 grand final! The Freddie tackle was great but he got big mal from behind and just took the legs
@@dalewilson9602 2 others contacting a young Andrew Ryan 1 metre off the line and a with stray leg between ball and grounding… hardly grassing a runaway immortal when your 19.
Sattler was better in 03
I consider this one of the best finals ever
This was Canberras 9th sudden death match in a row after mid season rep duties caused them to slip back in the pack. They did remarkably well considering half the team were on pain killers. And they have been the closest side to 3 peat since Parramatta did it in 1981/82/83.
Especially Ricky. Shouldn't have even been training with his injuries. Reaching the grand final even with the injuries was probably big enough of an achievement for this side.
isn't it ironic then that Penrith are favorites to do the three peat in 2023
@@rodneymatthews1891n we sure did ❤❤
Their First Grand Final Win To Penrith
Players like Paul Martin and Matthew wood is also been part of this champion Canberra side but most won't remember them because they've never reached the heights of Mullins or Croker
Paul Martin is so underrated, never made city / country level but he absolutely carved in the semi finals of 1990-1991 , hat trick against the bears a week before this, doubles galore, and he still holds the record for youngest raider, 16 when he played in the 1985 reserve grade grand final.
I say this about a lot of years in the 90s - but it should have been the Bears Year 🐻
1:33:17 Wow what a shame. True legend.
1:47:00 mal meninga Penrith Deserved their victory. The guy is a true legend who deals in fairdinkumness.
ref was a canberra fan
Please grand final 1992.
Thank you
Господи, ну почему сегодня так не играют?
Lol how many high tackles. A lot less stoppages back then too
Last game ever for channel 10.
You need a Sledgehammer to do any damage to Meninga. He wouldn’t even have felt it.
Gees - a few stiff arms up the front.
So these players had an 'occupation' - semi-professional it seems back in 1991
Graeme Hughes > Ray Warren
