- Paul Carige in the 1998 NRL Preliminary Final between Canterbury Bulldogs and Parramatta Eels.
The Eels lead 18-2 with less than 10 minutes left, before the Bulldogs produced the clubs greatest ever comeback, tying the game at 18-18 and winning in extra time. Many believe Paul Carige played a crucial role in the Bulldogs victory, or rather, in the Eels loss.

You can hear sterlo audibly sigh when he does the chip and chase 😂
Legend has it the ball is still rolling
I think that’s Cariige’s head still rolling after his critics kicked him senseless
he made it to 1st grade hats of to him well done sir
Yeah he had a pretty solid first grade career. Better than anything I have ever done. And to be honest I have seen many players over the years drop clangers far worse than that. Mind you I dont think that ball had stopped rolling in the first clip.
No blame for John Simon? He kicked out on the full and missed 2 field goals, one from in front, with 10 to go. Brian Smith then hooked him. The panic had set in.
Rotten decision from Harrigan than led to all the rest. With about 30 second left, only Parramatta could have won it in normal time from there. Shocking decision.
I think the only dumb play was the kick at full time. The ball was still moving that the refs simply got wrong, the catching of the balls & going out of bounds were just normal things that can happen with defenders right up in your face. Imagine if he lets them bounce & they go back infield.
The ghost of Cariage haunts the halls of Parra, they will never win another GF until that demon is exorcised, cost us the 2001,2009 and 2022 GFs
ball was still moving on his 1st play?
Sterlo's reactions/comments make this video
😅Forgot where he was, the goblins best ever work.
The ball was still moving when he grounded it...
Never played a game again after this.
when it rains it pours
He had a terrible game, but that ball hadn't stopped moving when he grounded it. Obviously
Thats Bill Harrigan, should have checked it with video ref
@@tigerwarsaw99bill didn’t like the video ref. He thought he didn’t need it.
@@gattingbowledwarneyep massive ego
@@tigerwarsaw99 I heard on a podcast that during the super league season ribot had to tell him to go to the video ref more often to keep the video ref sponsor happy. Just wouldn’t use it because he thought he didn’t get anything wrong.
@@gattingbowledwarne if you really want to punish yourself try reading his book. He says early in his career he hated the 5m rule so he would "get them back 10m so it was a better game" Hollywood Harrigan setting his own rules, and he never changed.
Paul had such a great game for the bulldogs that day 👏
Bulldogs player of the game...
And it was his birthday too
I wonder if they had a Birthday cake, in the sheds after the game🎂
When you think it can't get any worse... it does.
He is a teacher at my school
That's cool I bet he gets cheeky comments from students about it too 😂
Parramatta had a try disallowed just after half time because Carige was too far in front of Stuart Kelly who passed it forward. I think Brian Smith dropped him back to fullback after that.
They totally bombed two tries like that. There was another one where Kelly didn't pass it because Carige was in front of him, when if he'd just stayed back it would have been an easy try.
@@edwardbrett1416 That's right, Sterlo made the quip that someone should tell Carige to get behind Stuart Kelly so he has more running depth. Even Rabs (who doesn't normally shit on players) was chastising him for not learning from his mistakes.
It just got worse from there 😂
@@user-rs4gr9yq4u It's kind of funny that nobody really remembers his two most costly botches and that if he hadn't screwed those up, none of the later stuff would have mattered (in fact, most of them wouldn't have even happened since there wouldn't have been extra time).
bronco billy great ref if you didnt get hime on a sunday afternoon
poor bloke was rattled. he was a decent footy player just had a mick crocker
Hollywood Harrigan
Hairstyle Harrigan.
Match fixing at its best😂
He actually had a good season. But shocking game. I was at that prelim, it's was devastating 😢
And that game ending his career was rehearsed never to play again. Goes to show 10 mins can cost you your entire career
As a Eels fan i felt physically sick for over a week. I took the next 3 days off work. I will never forget that game. Oh well, We beat them yesterday so it's a positive start. We play Penrith next friday who we always beat. Just not in GF's.
Poor bloke lost his confidence and composure after giving away the line drop out. But the ball was still rolling and it should have even a 20m restart thanks to his own smart play. Paul Carige is the victim of the super league bias in the game at that time that ensured only super league sides would get to the Gand final.
I guess that same bias is what helped the ARL team get to an 18-2 lead with 10min to go as well using 4 of the key player that played for the Bulldogs? Same bias Paul running out and kicking the ball with 10sec to go? Seriously
At our pub we have a call and it is, "carige", Its used every time we notice a complete flop that has somehow faked it all the way to first grade. Hundreds have been called out since.
Accept you’ve never kicked a ball in your life stick to pouring beers mate.
This game happened 12 years after their last grand final win, it has been an additional quarter of a century and they still haven't won a GF.
"this year is Parra's year", though.
i agree with the video but to go & create a video about 1 player out 0f 17 is pretty cruel. It's easy for us to sit back on our lounges & be critics when we couldn't do any better ourselves is just mean & cruel.
You can't be critical of that performance though if you tried.
I played first grade for the Eelsin the late 80's & early 90's & played the grand total of 6 first grade games. I simply wasn't good enoughfor regular first grade games. The 6 games i played i was just filling in for injuredplayers. A lot happens in 80 minutes of footy. You are going to make 40+ tackles, run the ball, kick goals. To pick out what was the equivalent of 30 seconds in a whole game or100 minute game is really cruel & to do it afterer all this time is suspicious. Maybe Paul owes this guy some money all he stole his girlfriend or as i suspect the creator of this video always wanted to play first grade rugby league himself & Paul made i & he didn't it & he has never gotten over it.@@locominyana8916
Today's generation is easily triggered 😂 😂 😂
He grounded the ball in goal. Should of been a drop out
It was a drop out
@@winston.neville The ball clearly was not stopped lol, should not have been a line drop out, this should have been a smart play if not for incompetent refs. Looks like nothing has changed in that regard.
Oh it’s changed alright now the have more cameras more people deciding what the right call is and they still manage to completely fuck it up. It’s changed but not for the better.
@@SSPURR you said it should have been a drop out?
The rule used to be if the ball was still in motion and you had your foot in touch, you could touch the ball and it would result in a 20 metre restart
Match fixing at its finest. 😂
