“Can a Chromebook get a virus, be hacked, or get spyware?”
According to the makers of Malware-bytes Security, who sell anti-virus software, they say ‘yes!’ But a quick Google search will bring up this bit of info:
Chromebooks Are Inherently Secure and Have No Viruses
They are very secure and aren't susceptible to any known viruses. This is because each web page and Chrome app runs inside its own virtual “sandbox,” meaning other aspects of the computer can't be compromised by a single infected page.
So which is it? Can a Chromebook get a virus? Well, to answer that , we need to dig a little deeper on what a virus is and where a Chromebook can be vulnerable .
First, I should probably mention that malware is a general term for items in these two broad categories:
Viruses (boot sector, macro, overwrite, web-scripting, direct action, resident, multipartite)
Trojan horses
Worms
Adware
Bloatware
Spyware
Browser hijackers
Phishing sites
Ransomware
File-less malware
Windows PCs can be infected by any from this list.
Chromebooks cannot. This is because The Chrome OS prevents changes to the system through the use of write-only CMOS chips. So traditional viruses simply cannot get into the Chrome OS system to change things around, and they cannot block access or erase files. With that being said, Chromebooks are still vulnerable to Browser hijackers, Phishing sites, Ransomware, File-less malware, and far less common, even spyware from Android Apps. This is because code within third party browser extensions can change the browser settings, resulting in the browser loading a different home page, landing on a phishing web page, loading a ransomware or other annoying pop-up window, or even allowing spyware through a third party android App or extension. Also, Android apps are great on a Chromebook, but they can contain code that can lead them to become spyware.
The thing is, Chromebooks are nearly invulnerable to any items in the top part of our virus list, like Trojans, worms, Adware, bloatware because of locked-down and secure Chrome OS is.
Now with that being said, Chromebooks are still extremely safe and almost 100% secure....
So if your Chromebook begins acting strange, a traditional type of virus is not the cause. It’s most likely your browser was hijacked by an extension. These hijacks can result in all sorts of confusion for the user, because suddenly they expect one web site to load and another page loads in its place. Or an annoying pop up window keeps popping up every 15 seconds. A person might really believe that the system has a virus, but remember, it's most likely a browser hijack.
The good news is it is very easy to fix these problems! Simply remove the offending extension or App.
See the video to discover the steps to fix your Chromebook!

Great points! ChromeOS doesn’t have it’s own executable file type (correct me if I’m wrong on this though). The Chrome browser definitely has some malicious extensions and Chrome isn’t perfect warning people about malicious sites, but ChromeOS can’t open executables like MacOS and Windows can.
I do get warnings on some sites telling me that something is suspect.
@Adrian Martin Here is an update:
czcams.com/video/YzpY1uaIZvU/video.html
ChromeOS runs on a modified version of Android, which runs on a modified version of Linux. So you can boot a Chromebook into Linux and get a virus there, or install an Android executable file called an APK.
@@Cyorg13 Chromebooks cant sideload APKs from 3rd party sites like APKpure or elsewhere unless you basically modify your chromebook to allow it or enable it to sideload APKs. Only way to download APKs is through google app store which has approved apps and not all android apps are compatible with chromebooks. Installing Linux and making your chromebook a Linux computer is again just you modifying the chromeOS system. I run Native ChromeOS with no Linux and basically safe from any virhs or malware.

Thank you so much for your video! It was very informative. However, are Drive-By Downloads included in viruses that cannot infect a Chromebook?
Thank you for the question. downloads cannot get installed or infect a Chromebook, as only apps from the web store or play store can be installed.
Thank you! My school computer went crazy earlier today opening tabs and bookmarks on its own. I immediately thought it was hacked or had a virus and I freaked out. Now however I’m pretty sure it was just a temporary software/hardware bug, as I restarted the chrome book and now everything seems to be working as it should. Thanks for making this video, it helps me calm down at least a little
You're welcome. You can check the extensions and remove any that are causing the pop ups. I made a video on that too.
@@selmateacher7 I’ve checked and I don’t have any weird looking or unknown extensions nor apps. I’d assume it’s just the touchscreen on my chrome book that is a bit weird, as the screens seems to click on its own. It doesn’t open different links than what I clicked, and it’s not opening any pop ups. It’s simply clicking as if I was touching the screen, opening bookmarks that I have and shortcuts and such. Now I’m not as worried about a virus or such, I’m more annoyed at the fact the hardware might be broken. Thank You!
@@anonymousalpaca7744 My touchscreen can do that at times. When I restart it acts better.
@@selmateacher7 Ok, I'll try that. Thank you

Hi Daniel. Good job Thanks for the video but I know my chromebooks are hacked. First powerwash I feel could be compromised and faked not doing what it is supposed to do. Questions: 1) Is there a way to extract a firmware file copy of your firmware an checked against hash published to check its integrity? In the past when you did a powerwash you could check if you wanted to change the firmware, now this is missing
Yes, i believe every time a Chromebook boots from a powerwash, it checks the firmware. Also, since all Chromebooks come with firmware that implemented verified boot and do not allow changes done to them. The Chrome OS is very secure. If you feel that you were hacked, please change your Google password. as it is more possible that your account was hacked.
Idk what to do! I'm crying because there are viruses in my hp Chromebook and I cant get it to please help!
I would check the extensions as seen here:
czcams.com/video/CUgzHUKNbsM/video.html
if all else fails, you can do a powerwash as well as seen here:

Yes. That is where an exe file is downloaded on a win PC.

I need some help Im worried I have a virus or something. I woke up today and now there's at the top right of the chrome browser were you can minimize the tab there is a black circle with a white triangle and when I hover over it it said tab search. This Is on my chromebook
It is most likely an extension. You can remove those by clicking on the puzzle piece found in the top right hand corner of the browser. For more tips , with both windows and Chromebooks:

Could you please do a quick tutorial on how to remove certificates. Thank you
Good info btw
The certificates on the Android phone, Chromebook, or both?.
On a Chromebook, click the three dots (customize and control..) on the upper right hand side of the browser. Select settings. A new window should open. Now click in the search box of that new window and key in how certificates. The 'manage certificates.' tool opens up and you may remove them there.
Thank you for the comment and the question.
@@selmateacher7 Thank u Mr. Berry

When this happened to my students it was always the weather bug extension. Ones from Google are safe.

i was on my chromebook and it automatically it took me to a page telling I was hacked but is seemed suspicious and it said it was from " Microsoft " . what do I do ?
Close that page, if you have not done so already. Chromebooks do not get viruses, and none have been 'hacked' by any web site, according to the web security news sites, I read. What may have happened was you landed on a web site that made it looked like you were hacked so that they could fool you into giving them information about yourself or payment info. Just close off that website. If an extension is causing this, you can remove it as seen here: czcams.com/video/CUgzHUKNbsM/video.html
homie i was on a site that had constant ad pop ups and no matter where you clicked a new tab would open with the ad or site. But now im getting system notifications from my chromebook with stuff that looks like a virus, is there anything i can do?

Could being signed into multiple gmail accounts in addition to my primary cause issues? I went to cut on my chromebook to find my accounts were logged off. Never had any issue before. Any idea what this could be? I’d really appreciate your input.
I’ve never reset, powerwashed or anything like that. I did have a tendency to just shut the laptop when I finished doing what I was doing. I hardly ever locked the screen then shut it down manually. Good to hear
Sir, my chromebook 99% has virus because it isnt just in chrome and its not a popup, it is opening tabs by itself very fastly, three tabs at once, without my mouse clicking and my touchscreen is clean, and it is when Im in chrome browser it is opening inspect element and other things fastly, what do i do to remove what i assume is trojann.
If it is an exetensuon can it move the actual the computer, my question is if the browser was hijacked can it open side-applications like for example Candy crush, because that is what mine did: it opened candy crush, google docs, and another couple of apps. It started in Chrome i was playing a game Conclave and then suddenly i saw “inspect element” is being used randomly, the screen is red, black, grey, hovering over inspect element things. But i did not open Element inspect. I opened a new tab and whil my mouse was hovering over “new tab”, that’s when it opened all the apps simultaneously. I wasn’t near the touchscreen and my screen was clean. I don’t understand, so i closed my computer.
Thank you so much for the video thiugh. I spent some time reading the comments and you are very clear.
And my cursor wasn’t near the apps either, just on the new tab, and my mouse is working fine too, I thought maybe it was the mouse’s problem but the cursor isn’t near the apps it opened so it cannot be that. It is very upsetting to see experience…
Plus the inspect element wasn’t the only thing, it was instantly going to inspect element without manually clicking it, then it would open quickly the deop down menu , all by itself fastly, like 20 frames per second… I advise you not to use this “Conclave” game because all i assume is that it caused this.
You may have someone remote controlling your device. Please do this: disconnect from your wifi and see if it still does the same behavior. If the same behavior continues, then you have an input issue, as in the mouse (touchpad) or touchscreen is causing this issue. Hello. I see your comment. To play games on a Chromebook, you can download games with the Play store or Chrome Web Store. You may also play PC games as seen here:
czcams.com/video/qd1mgzPtpGQ/video.html
it is safe.
@@selmateacher7 thank you so much!!
@@Aldodragon You're welcome.
btw can you make a video about the chromium org sites including the bugs chromium one to also see if its safe or not.
According to URLvoid, it is safe.
Thanks! I keep getting virus scams. Or hijacked.
Sorry to hear that
Idk if my chromebook got hacked it keeps on Crashing, Logging me out and turning off and now my screen says "chrome os is missing or damaged."
Not hacked. I have seen that before. It is the storage failure. The internal storage is failing or has failed, causing these problems.
@@selmateacher7 Ok thank you
@@KagKiro You're welcome. The problem with the internal storage is it is not an easy thing to fix. You may try Powerwash, which re-installs the OS, but if the internal storage is failing and corrupting the Chrome OS it would show signs as you described. Is the Chromebook still under warranty?
I think mine has one every hour it shuts off
That could be a heating issue. If you want , you can do a power wash as seen here, if you think it is a software clinch. But after being in the tech business since the early 1990s, my experience says.. "heating issue." Anyway.. powewrwash steps are here:

ClamAV is a popular option for keeping viruses off of your Linux machine and out of your shared directories. There are a few reasons why ClamAV is so popular among the Linux crowd. First, it’s open source and free. Second, it’s very effective in finding trojans, viruses, malware, and other threats.
ClamAV can be run from command line or it can be used with the ClamTK GUI. Both tools are easy to use and very dependable.
