“Can a Chromebook get a virus, be hacked, or get spyware?”
According to the makers of Malware-bytes Security, who sell anti-virus software, they say ‘yes!’ But a quick Google search will bring up this bit of info:
Chromebooks Are Inherently Secure and Have No Viruses
They are very secure and aren't susceptible to any known viruses. This is because each web page and Chrome app runs inside its own virtual “sandbox,” meaning other aspects of the computer can't be compromised by a single infected page.
So which is it? Can a Chromebook get a virus? Well, to answer that , we need to dig a little deeper on what a virus is and where a Chromebook can be vulnerable .
First, I should probably mention that malware is a general term for items in these two broad categories:
Viruses (boot sector, macro, overwrite, web-scripting, direct action, resident, multipartite)
    Trojan horses
    Worms
    Adware
    Bloatware
    Spyware
    Browser hijackers
    Phishing sites
    Ransomware
    File-less malware
Windows PCs can be infected by any from this list.
Chromebooks cannot. This is because The Chrome OS prevents changes to the system through the use of write-only CMOS chips. So traditional viruses simply cannot get into the Chrome OS system to change things around, and they cannot block access or erase files. With that being said, Chromebooks are still vulnerable to Browser hijackers, Phishing sites, Ransomware, File-less malware, and far less common, even spyware from Android Apps. This is because code within third party browser extensions can change the browser settings, resulting in the browser loading a different home page, landing on a phishing web page, loading a ransomware or other annoying pop-up window, or even allowing spyware through a third party android App or extension. Also, Android apps are great on a Chromebook, but they can contain code that can lead them to become spyware.
The thing is, Chromebooks are nearly invulnerable to any items in the top part of our virus list, like Trojans, worms, Adware, bloatware because of locked-down and secure Chrome OS is.
Now with that being said, Chromebooks are still extremely safe and almost 100% secure....
So if your Chromebook begins acting strange, a traditional type of virus is not the cause. It’s most likely your browser was hijacked by an extension. These hijacks can result in all sorts of confusion for the user, because suddenly they expect one web site to load and another page loads in its place. Or an annoying pop up window keeps popping up every 15 seconds. A person might really believe that the system has a virus, but remember, it's most likely a browser hijack.
The good news is it is very easy to fix these problems! Simply remove the offending extension or App.
See the video to discover the steps to fix your Chromebook!

Only way to download APKs is through google app store which has approved apps and not all android apps are compatible with chromebooks. Installing Linux and making your chromebook a Linux computer is again just you modifying the chromeOS system. I run Native ChromeOS with no Linux and basically safe from any virhs or malware.

Close that page, if you have not done so already. Chromebooks do not get viruses, and none have been 'hacked' by any web site, according to the web security news sites, I read. Just close off that website. If an extension is causing this, you can remove it as seen here: czcams.com/video/CUgzHUKNbsM/video.html

Sir, my chromebook 99% has virus because it isnt just in chrome and its not a popup, it is opening tabs by itself very fastly, three tabs at once, without my mouse clicking and my touchscreen is clean, and it is when Im in chrome browser it is opening inspect element and other things fastly, what do i do to remove what i assume is trojann.
If it is an exetensuon can it move the actual the computer, my question is if the browser was hijacked can it open side-applications like for example Candy crush, because that is what mine did: it opened candy crush, google docs, and another couple of apps. It started in Chrome i was playing a game Conclave and then suddenly i saw “inspect element” is being used randomly, the screen is red, black, grey, hovering over inspect element things. But i did not open Element inspect. I opened a new tab and whil my mouse was hovering over “new tab”, that’s when it opened all the apps simultaneously. I wasn’t near the touchscreen and my screen was clean. I don’t understand, so i closed my computer.

Plus the inspect element wasn’t the only thing, it was instantly going to inspect element without manually clicking it, then it would open quickly the deop down menu , all by itself fastly, like 20 frames per second… I advise you not to use this “Conclave” game because all i assume is that it caused this.

You may have someone remote controlling your device. Please do this: disconnect from your wifi and see if it still does the same behavior. If the same behavior continues, then you have an input issue, as in the mouse (touchpad) or touchscreen is causing this issue. I have seen Chromebooks act crazy in class and the cause was a faulty touchpad, 100% of the time. But disconnect from the wifi , just to test it, please.

Not hacked. I have seen that before. It is the storage failure. The internal storage is failing or has failed, causing these problems.

@@KagKiro You're welcome. The problem with the internal storage is it is not an easy thing to fix. You may try Powerwash, which re-installs the OS, but if the internal storage is failing and corrupting the Chrome OS it would show signs as you described. Is the Chromebook still under warranty?

That could be a heating issue. If you want , you can do a power wash as seen here, if you think it is a software clinch. But after being in the tech business since the early 1990s, my experience says.. "heating issue." Anyway.. powewrwash steps are here:

ClamAV is a popular option for keeping viruses off of your Linux machine and out of your shared directories. There are a few reasons why ClamAV is so popular among the Linux crowd. First, it’s open source and free. Second, it’s very effective in finding trojans, viruses, malware, and other threats.
ClamAV can be run from command line or it can be used with the ClamTK GUI. Both tools are easy to use and very dependable.
