  • When it comes to bicep exercises, the preacher curl is one that tends to feel the most dangerous because of the intense stretch placed on the biceps tendon in the bottom position. The clip shown here is one that caused many to want to avoid the exercise all together after watching the gentleman tear both of his biceps at the same time on one rep. What is the truth? Well, you don’t have to avoid the preacher curl when trying to build bigger biceps but you do have to make two modifications if you want to perform them more safely. First, save the barbell for curls and use lighter dumbbells to do this. The goal of this biceps exercise is to provide for a stronger contraction and mind muscle connection. The use of very heavy weights here is just not advisable as it places an even greater stress on the muscle as the moment arm gets to its longest position at the bottom, fully stretched position. Also, pay attention to where your body weight is. You do not want to sit down on the bench completely when doing this as it forces your bodyweight too far behind the bar. Instead, stand up and lean over the bench a bit more. This will allow you to dig your elbows back into the pad to engage the lats more which will allow them to provide stability and support to the biceps in this bottom position.       ​@donutshazz8800 even in preacher...the hand supination is very key. Straight bar is too unnatural. I dont do em. Pullups and rows is all need. Lol... but if I were to curl..EZ bar all day long, triceps too.

      true infact stopping midway is even more injury prone cuz it makes the tendons weaker since you're not fully extending. Its the same thing as not fully extending your legs on leg press, people just need to stop ego lifting and get used to the movement.

    It's a key exercise in order to strengthen your tendons.
    Just remember to use less weight than you would with a bicep curl.
    Your tendons resistance won't improve as fast as the muscle growth, so don't increase weight as fast as you would for another exercise even though it feels light.

      People forget this, that every exercise variation you try, you should really be doing some warm-up sets and figuring out the new sensations and strength curves to actually avoid injury. Preacher curls? Fine. Preacher Curls with your standing curl weight? No no no.

    Damn! Double bicep tear! I’ve never seen somebody that’s not on Roids do that. I’ve worked out for 25 years and never torn a muscle, and lifted very heavy for my weight.

      Same. If your not being a twat you won't tear on a seated preacher machine. It's just a hyperfocused machine meant for using free weights in an isolated manner. So this bit of advice is partially incorrect. The more higher the seat the more the front delt takes the tension off the bicep. Sure that helps somewhat with safety but it doesn't hit the biceps to hypertrophy like you can with the preacher set up.

    More importantly, don’t ego lift. Preachers are best for lighter weight, very slow negatives. Slow as possible. Half the weight you’d use for a standing curl

    I feel safer doing strict atanding curls. Though I feel alot of tension on my tendons no matter how I curl

    You make sure this doesn't happen by doing the full ROM from the beginning, tarting out really _really_ *REALLY* light, and progressing slowly. This injury is not due to some innate flaw with preacher curls or with his position on the seat/pad

    Never fully extend and lean a little forward while lifting yourself off of the seat just a bit to help bring the weight back up WITHOUT FULLY EXTENDING YOUR ARMS OUT and like he said don’t be stationary and you’ll be able to keep doing these for years to come. Everything is about form and another reason why you see most bodybuilders that stay clear from injury only doing half reps .

    Don't ego lift, start with light weights until you understand the exercise, keep the tension on the biceps and don't just let the arm extend until it's supported by tendoms and muscle elasticity. Again, there's no need to go heavy on preacher curls, just try it out slowly with light weights. Last...again, don't ego lift.

    too much weight with bad form will cause the biceps to pop. Locking down on lats, leaning over, driving in the tricep into pad gives a better pump/safer, but its unlikely that you’ll look super cool preacher curling 135 using good form.

    I’ve heard from everyone that knows science when it comes to lifting that you should sit further down to get a big stretch and to basically not cheat. I can move alot more weight the further up I sit. As long as ur not on gear or lift less than 6 reps you should be fine doing whatever u want (but further down is better no doubt)

    It’s also due to persons progressing to quickly and not allowing for their tendons to get strong enough. Progressive overload with good technique and a solid training plan should prevent this from occurring

    Ez curl bar with your hands not fully supinated is way safer. I’ve never seen a bicep tear or tendon rupture from a partially pronated grip

    Saw my training buddy pop his back when deadlifting. Long story short he was a big ego lifter and thought he could just come in and one rep max 200 kg witout any warmup, haven't seen him in the gym since.

    I always set my seat high. I had a pec partially tear when a cable malfunctioned. That taught me a lot about safeguarding isolation movements. Hope that poor dude healed well. Spider curls are much safer. Dropping the bar is easier and safer.

    or, dont extend too much to almost 180°.
    just up to 130-140° is enough.
    half range but keep in tension

    Don't use a support. You can functionally get the same biceps stimulus sitting on an Incline bench and moving your elbows forward so they're in line with your body.

    I ruptured one bicep tendon and it was a long recovery. I couldn’t imagine rupturing both at the same time. Dude is going to need someone to wipe his ass 😂😂

    If you start your lifting career doing it that way and building up strength in that range of motion you’ll almost certainly be fine. Just don’t randomly go to ranges of motion you haven’t trained properly and don’t bicep curl weight you can’t get for 12+ reps. Pretty easy.

    I built a huge flagstone walkway for 2 days with very heavy stone. That following weekend I tore my right bicep from bending down with my sleeping 1 year old son in my left hand to push the bed a little more into the corner a few inches. It was crazy. I heard it snap and then make a coiling sound.

      That sounds horrible. I can feel some joint pain in my biceps from carrying my 8 kg 9 month old around and putting her to sleep by hopping on the fitness ball and holding her perpendicularly to myself since she is fussy when held sideways. Now I’m scared of an injury as well, because it kinda hurts my right bicep to do pull ups

    Never extend too much. I know they say full range of motion is king, but I dont think that applies to biceps. Especially when going heavy.

    never understood guys who went heavy on preacher curls. it is a one way ticket to bicep tears when done incorrectly. you can see him wincing and grinning on the eccentric just before the tears, man had it coming.

    don't forget to stretch before and after lifting too. flexablity in the muscle goes a long way.

      Definitely don’t stretch before lifting, stretching induce stress in the tendons, he got injured because was going all the way down stretching his arm.
      Stretching after training is fine but before it’s not

    if you tearing your biceps on a full range loaded movement then you either needed to decrease the load or rest to recover the injury you have caused to the tendon from previous full range exercises

    Did this lifting a pull out sofa to vacuum under it. Sounded horrible. I could hear and feel it tear as I watched. Took surgery to reattach. Months of PT. The lesson: NEVER VACUUM!

    I stopped doing them since i saw this video i sticked to strict barbell and incline dumbbell curls
