Very impressive. I didn't try to beach start yet, I'm too afraid to harm my foil. But with a mate you can dock start from an inflatable sup board, it works very well. It is safer for your gear and you can play exactly the same. But you need a mate to grab the sup board.
That’s awesome! If the beach is all sand, it’s not too bad on the foil, but yes the learning process is tricky and you’re gonna hit the ground quite a few times 😅

Salut Gwen et Damien. Retour d'expérience donc. Ça y est les beach tard c'est acquis depuis le mois de mai.
Mon pumping en dock start n'etait pas encore tout à fait acquis, que j'ai démarré les Beachstarts (BS).
1ere session: j'ai reussi à mettre le pied arrière sur la planche.
2eme: les deux pieds dessus
4 Session: debut de pumping.
En fait, en 50 essais, c'etait acquis. Je m'attendais à plus dur et plus long. Le skimboard m'a aidé je pense pour la montée pied arrière puis pied avant.
Maintenant, j'adore ça, je commence à aller chercher des petites secondes en partant du bord, tournée dessus et revenir tranquillement vers la plage !🤩

I've found that the higher you are in the water column the easier it is to surf small bumps and pump. By almost breaching the foil you can generate more energy on each pump.

100%, the higher you are, the less drag, the more efficient. But also need to consider the turn with a high aspect foil, if too high, it will breach too much and loose lift

L'autre jour, j'ai été agréablement surpris car, ne maîtrisant même pas encore le dockstart, j'ai réussi plusieurs beachstarts ! Après seulement 30 essais répartis sur 3 sessions. Étonnant ! Mais, la pratique du skimboard avec la montée type monkey crawl, m'a aidé je pense.
Donc beachstarts réussi, mais je n'ai pas encore réussi à enchaîner sur un bon pumping.
Mais, je n'ai qu'une envie, c'est confirmer cela.

@@DamienLeroyCZcams moi j'habite en Corse. J'en suis à une quinzaine de sessions surf foil depuis presque un an. Je commence à pas mal pomper après le take off, mais je ne remonte pas encore vers le large. Je vais bosser les docks starts puis beach start. Je viens de m'acheter une ail avant en 1950 cm2. J'étais en 1250. Ça va m'aider.

@@DamienLeroyCZcams ta vidéo m'a motivé à bloc pour arriver à faire la même. J'imagine qu'il va falloir bosser d'arrache-pied mais une fois la compétence acquise ça va être que du bonheur. Dans un autre style j'ai appris le skimboard à 38 ans, et c'était assez coriace aussi. À bientôt !

Not necessarily a big drop, otherwise it’s harder to know where to take the last step, but basically a gradual drop. We will make a video on that so stay tuned
@@DamienLeroyCZcams I'm gonna ruin my (already pretty scratched up) Axis 1150 this year learning to beach start. Our inland beaches neither are predominantly sandy nor do they drop off significantly.

Hi Gwen. Awesome video, tutorial, and as always mad skills! Have an upcoming vacation and hoping to practice beach starts. I use a small Axis tray 94 for dock and ladder starts. It works really well for that. What do you think ideal size is for learning beach starts? I'm about 70kg. I have a 30L prone board also, but the Tray just packs so well so was hoping it would work. Also I have a 72cm mast and a 60cm. I imagine the 60 would be the better choice for learning this skill?
Mike, your smaller board will work, I actually think it would be harder on a 30L board, as any extra volume is unnecessary.
60cm mast will make it easier for sure, but later you will enjoy the 72cm mast especially if you want to ride some swell after your beachstart. Enjoy the process!

So it easier to use these shorter thinner boards rather than a wing sized board for surf foiling? Do you also use a strap setup?
Correct for the beach start as you have to run with it thinner is better. For surf foiling (paddling in) you need more volume like a 35L- 55L so you can have a little bouncy to catch the wave. Straps make it harder to jump and land perfectly in the straps to pump of the shore but is a goal for Gwen so he can flip, running of the beach! :) Straps work for prone paddling as well, again trickier to get up in the straps perfectly catching the wave. It can open the door to jumps and tricks. More advanced but personal preference. I would start always with out straps then add them.

The bigger the easier, it’s good to learn with a foil around 1800-2000 cm2

I'm getting a similar Foil fron Cabrinha. Which Fuselage do you use? Small or mediun? Have you tried them both with this setup?

Thank you! My guess is around 140 bpm at the beginning, but increasing to 170-180 toward the end
