    In addition to what's been said, if your headlights are clouding and yellowing like the van in the video's, you will want to at least restore them, if not replace if they are that bad. No point in having great blades with poor headlight visibility.

    Beam style wipers are built with a flaw. The center part has the least contact with the glass and is prone to leave a smear of water. Installed a new windshield glass, replaced the wipers for the beam style, and had to return to replace them for a conventional tried and tested style wipers. It may be uglier but it does a better job.

    I still have original wiper blade frames on my 2010 Honda van. I replace the rubber inserts (OEM) from the dealer every 12-18 months. It's been working well for me this way. Why change the whole thing when just changing the rubber is fine.

  • @TheRealSmithFamily
    @TheRealSmithFamily Před 5 lety +25

    If you're paying 20-30 bucks for a blade, you're doing it wrong! You can find them online for a LOT less than that. I've bought them as low as 7 or 8 bucks on killer sales. I buy them when I see them and then store them until needed and try to stick to Trico which are OEM on a lot of brands AND the company that invented the wiper blade.
    Also, 9 times out of 10 the blades are fine and it's the glass that needs attention. Use ammonia free glass cleaner and a clay bar to remove glass contaminates and your wipers will work like new in a lot of occasions. A Mr Clean Magic Eraser with glass cleaner will work as well. Scrub it well! All that being said, if you don't live in a cold climate with snow and ice, you won't appreciate the frameless blades as much. The articulated metals ones fill with ice and snow and have you sticking your arm out as you drive to flick the blade so the snow and ice falls out.

    If you live where you get snow, use the hybrid blades or an actual winter blade. Do NOT use the beam style. Snow builds up between the windshield and the massive shoulders of the beam and forces the wiper away from the windshield, creating streaking or no contact at all. They are also overly aggressive when it comes to how much they arch, which actually reduces pressure on the windshield because the wiper arm spring isn’t strong enough to maintain pressure. Ask me how I know lol

    the beam type is most expensive but are not for all weather conditions. They did better than any other type in snow and very cold weather, but when it comes to light rain or summer driving, they are the worst as they tend to squeak a lot and the friction is just too much. I had to switch back to regular economy blades after just one month.

    for me, just clean the wiper blade every two months and replace with oem inserts every two to three years. And as a poster said below, clean your windshield. The problem with replacing the whole wiper arm with after market ones is that the cheap ones are plastic and they crack after a couple of years under the northeast weather (the oems are metal). Want to bake your wipers last longer? Treat your windshield with some type of automotive "quick-detailer" or "spray-wax". Makes the water bead and allows your wiper blades to glide with less friction allowing the rubber of the blade to last longer. I used Rain-X for years, but found the spray wax to work even better.

    My family and I have gone through many and OEM seems to work best on the different vehicles we’ve tried. The OE Mercedes Wipers on our E350 (2006) lasted about 3 years before chattering uncontrollably. We replaced them with a cheap set of RainX wipers and while they don’t chatter, they look odd and move quite a bit (loose.) The OE wipers on my 07 S550 lasted for two years that I had it (no clue how long they were on before) until I replaced them with a set of OE purchased online. My local dealer wanted $120 for a set of wipers. Absolutely insane. I got mine for about $40 or so on FCPEuro and they are perfect (blade style) and leave zero streaks. Added with rainx or a good wax the water just beads off the windshield anyways. The Ford blade style wipers on my mom’s 2014 Escape are garbage and streak pretty bad. The rear wiper has totally disintegrated with only 11k miles of use.

    Good article but many of the generic retrofit aero (frameless) blades fail to follow the curves or exert even pressure across the screen. If framed blades are original equipment generally it’s best to stick with those. If when new your car has aero or framed option you can change from framed to aero with good performance by swapping both blades and arms for the OE fit alternative. The very best wiper design I know of are those appearing on many Mercedes and the G20 3 series for example. They incorporate the washer jets into the blade. When you operate the washers the wipers immediately wipe the splodge of window wash that would otherwise obscure vision for a time

    Go to the dealership for your car and ask for a set of wipers for your car. They’re very often surprisingly cheap and definitely the best ones you can get for your car. Wipers are one of the very few things I think are great to get at the stealership!

    Tried the "Beam" type blades on my 2004 Honda Pilot and above 40MPH, they lift off the windshield on the left side of the drivers field of view, allowing a area of un-wiped windshield. This is not ideal in south Florida where we tend to get many rain showers. I had to switch back to conventional wiper blades.

      It could be because your wiper arm is bent out of shape. I have this problem on my Volvo 850 1997. The arm itself is bent out of shape in such a way that the wiper blade is barely making contact with the windshield. There is almost no pressure in the windshield by the arm.

      Then how do u get water off of it dude?

    • @Tembel_Kopek
      @Tembel_Kopek Před 5 lety

      @@richterman3962 Wind will take care of that as long as you go faster than about 60 to 80 km/h (which is about 37 to 50 mph), depending on the used product of course. The faster you go, the better it works. I will only use my wipers when I can't go faster than that, or for a quick splash of windscreen wiper fluid to clean the windscreen. But even without going fast you won't use your wipers that much because the water will form small beads, you can actually look right through them. You will always see a distinct difference between a sealed and a non-sealed windscreen.
