Hopefully someone out there see this. I graduated from college and got my degree. I got a job as insulator i loved being at the plant seeing everything i learned but i got so much potential and so much i want to learn and do. I would do anything to get the job to help my family. If anybody is willing to help me i would really appreciate it and you would change my life and im ready to work.

Justin Brister what did you get a degree in? You have to take into account that a process operator for a refinery will put you to the test to learn how instrumentation signals work, reactors, reboiler systems, heat exchangers, flash vessels, surge drums, fractionators, different types of vessels, tanks, pumps... you name it. The competition is tough out there. I would suggest taking a 2 year course that would allow you to grasp hydrocarbon processing procedures in order to have a better chance at landing a job as a process operator for a refinery if that’s what you want. Times have changed and you don’t get hired in by knowing anyone at a company anymore.

j ross I agree, refineries are now seeking industrial technology, engineering, and other applied science majors. Industrial technology majors are highly preferred from what I’ve seen in most applications. If you have an associates in math or chemistry, it’ll be really tough to get a job because you don’t differ from a lot of people. And industrial technology major would put you at the top of the list to get hired. I finish my degree as an industrial technology major in August 2019, so next month. I’ve already been recruited by a chemical plant in Odessa, TX before graduating just by being and industrial technology major. In my case I’m going back one more year to get an instrumentation degree to double down. I agree that its competitive out there but if you have this degree you shouldn’t have a hard time finding a job if you have this degree.

@@hduhdhhsj9982 i actually got a ptech degree from Houston Community college in may 18 it really served me worthless because i havent been able to find a job as an operator, actually the whole thing is a scam its all about luck when getting hired i know more people with ptech degees that are unemployed than people with operator jobs i was offered a job in midland with ecolab but it only paid 19 an hour as high school teacher i make about 25 an hour unfortunately no OT

Luis Villa I don’t think you’re really looking. Houston is flooded with opportunities for process technology. You might not be getting calls back because you lack experience. Try building some experience in another place. West Texas is a great place to get opportunities because of how busy they are. Then once you get experience I’m sure you could find a job in Houston. You also have to realize there’s many community colleges in Houston that offer process technology so it’s really competitive, that why you have to do something to stand out, experience, another degree that could help an operators knowledge (instrumentation, industrial maintenance, chemistry, etc.). This isn’t a “Scam” like you said, just like any other career paths these businesses will only recruit the most qualified individuals. And for the eco lab company you mentioned in Odessa, TX, that’s the chemical company I worked for 5 months when I was down there( Nalco Champion) I started off at 22.75 60 hours a week, about 55k a year after taxes. Great company to work for and a great place to get experience. I don’t know what kind of program you guys have in Houston but in my school in New Mexico everybody in my class got a job around the time they graduated. In fact big oil and gas refineries such as Chevron go recruit students out of every program every fall and spring semester. If the opportunity for you hasn’t come, better yourself and your knowledge for the industry. I also have friends that didn’t get a job until 6 months after they graduated but they work for big oil refineries near Odessa.

@@hduhdhhsj9982 I got my ptech in april of 2018. Im looking the only problem that i have is everytime i do apply for a job thats in another state i either dont hear back but when i do they make a little laugh that i would apply for a job in new york or Tennessee or Texas. Ive driven up to michigan in a one dah trip so driving isnt the issue its a financial situation giving i would have to go for an interview and find a place to stay and if i dont get the job then thats money to get back to Mississippi. Whats difficult for me is finding something close to home as well.

Keep searching. Refineries don’t usually hire often (at least in my area). But don’t stop searching.
