    As a former Endicott resident, I’m sad to see how run down the village has become. I live in Daytona Beach now and there’s construction everywhere and things are booming. I wish Endicott could see some kind of revitalization.

    I can't believe how much it's deteriorated! The whole plaza is sad looking. I remember shopping there before the flood. Hopefully everything will fall into place and the area will be useful again. I don't know why "JC field days" popped into my head when I saw all this open space...... Great narrative Frank 👍

    I used to go to Tony's Pizza every week. Used to be one of the more popular spots in the triple cities. Shopped at Grand Union all the time. What a shame what has happened to the place.

    A couple of corrections from somebody who lived there at the time: Where you indicated a Grand Union grocery store on the east end of the plaza was in fact an A&P. The Grand Union was on the west end of the strip and was opened at the same time as the Grandway, as they wer both owned by the same corporation. The A&P was on the end of the section that was torn down. Between there and Grandway was a CVS, EJ shoe store, a bar called The Keg that featured some good live music, Radio Shack, a maybe one or two other small stores.
    I don't see how that area can be successfully redeveloped because it IS built on a landfill, or as was known in those days, a garbage dump. that land will continue to settle because of the rotting garbage for many years to come. I don't see it as anything but a "green space", much as they're doing with the old GE site in Westover.
    The Binghamton plaza was built about the same time, and in the same way - sited on a dump, built by the Grandway/Grand Union corporation, and pretty much in the same condition as the Endicott plaza is now. I can remember when both of them were as smooth and as flat as a billiard table. It's sad what a lack of foresight and 60+ years of decomposing garbage have done.

    This plaza was already in horrible condition when I stopped here while deal hunting with a friend in 2004 or 2005. The parking lot, what there was of it, was full of holes and just completely gone in some spots.
    I stopped at both the Kmart and the Salvation Army that was closer to the road. There was also a game store next door to the Salvation Army at that point and looking on their shelves it was easy to see why I didn't find any clearance games at the Kmart.

    Use to be Grand Union and Grand Way before K Mart. Sadly, this typifies what Endicott and Triple Cities are - old and run down.

    It is sad that the area is such a mess! That said, if it was built over a landfill and it suffered from a flood; maybe the best
    course is to tear out the pavement and the building and make it a greenspace and flood plain.

    Before the old ej landfill this area used to be what they called the swamp, ej used to dump tons of leather off stampings here as well as other materials. Eve part of J.F Snapp fields are part of the old swamp area.

    • @JackWCornell
      @JackWCornell Před 2 lety +1

      The Grand Union was actually to the far left of the Kmart. The Kmart was originally Grand Way. There was a way to get from one store to the other through an opening in the wall.
      (You incorrectly indicated that a Grand Union was in the same structure that Tony's Pizza was attached to)

      Opened as a Grand Way in the 60s and was the first big retailer in town. Grand Union grocery came later. Caused a few small retailers in town trouble especially hardware and clothing stores. Later became Bradlee’s then Kmart. Across the street was Phila. Sales, or Phillies as we called it. What a dump. Ah, the good old days.

      Whole town is a Superfund site. Want a side of TCE with your eggs and toast? I have multiple family members who all got cancer and died all of whom lived or worked there for years. My mom was a home health aid who had several child cancer patients in clusters in this area. Sadly, I grew up "just outside" the official plume (they don't know that it ends, they never tested my neighborhood, one street outside the zone). I've had asthma and severe allergies and autoimmune disorders my entire life, probably to culminate in cancer. Thanks, IBM & EJ.
      2 Grandmothers - cancer. Mother - cancer. 2 Aunts - cancer. Uncle - cancer. Think its coincidence?
