I live in Minnesota, a beautiful, healthy, liberal state with a great economy. Minnesota has four seasons. You have to like or at least tolerate four seasons to live here, and sometimes the winters and summers are brutal. My one-bedroom, rent-controlled apartment has a panoramic view of the Mississippi River and of my father's historic landmark office building. The public library is next door; the police department is right across the street. The rent? $345 per month. The secret? Years and years--think nearly a decade--of being on an annoying tedious waiting list and having to renew my application every twenty four months. I have friends and former co-workers who fled to Florida upon retirement and who are shocked by the recent cost of living increases in everything there. It appears to have hit suddenly and seems to be associated with the American economic collapse of 2020. Some apartments in Florida now cost more than rowhouses in downtown San Francisco. And for what? Endless heat and humidity and a sedentary, aging population. Also, Florida is a cultural wasteland, a right-wing backwater with a reactionary state government. Fun for the whole family!

20% savings rate is not realistic for individuals who need to find an affordable place to live. The individuals who can easily save 20% of their income are not worried about where they're going to retire. Those are people making over $100,000 a year. After taxes that's about $70,000 and 20% of that is $14,000 a year which is almost $1,200 a month. It used to be that 10% was a healthy savings rate. The systematic decimation of the traditional pension plan in the private sector is killing rhe middle-class. And at the same time, the rich have never been more wealthy. That's a death spiral for a society.
