  • Do you wear Chukkas or Chelsea boots with your kilt? Have you ever heard of the Balmoral Boot?
The first two are common enough shoe styles in Saxon dress, but how do they work with Highland Dress? As for the last, you probably have seen them without realizing it since the Balmoral boot is often called simply a walking boot or Victorian boot. But there IS a subtle difference between Balmorals and other men's boots.
Erik runs down the features of each of these classic shoe styles for us and how well they work with a kilted outfit, either casual or dressy.

I like to wear a pair of Dr. Martens with my Utilikilt. 3 hole shoe for smart, 10 hole boot for casual. Polished until you can see your face in 'em. Black or Cherry Red - lovely.

I recently dug out my 20+ y/o 20 eye cherry red steel toe DMs after close to 20 years lol. Can’t wait to rock em w/a utility kilt.

Try a pair of Solovair boots they're the Original Dr Martens. (they made them for Dr Martin originally and created the air sole) Company still exists and in the UK instead of the cheap Dr Martin's from China. Only difference is the gray thread instead of yellow around the welt.

Yeesh. I literally received my first pair of Dr. Martens Chelsea boots today and with warmer weather expected tomorrow I was planning to break out a utility kilt and break in my new Chelseas. And I love wearing my DM Sussex leather chukka type boots with utility kilts. Maybe a more casual thing like a utility kilt lends itself to the boot styles in question whereas a traditional kilt, not so much. I’ve yet to get any so I suppose time will tell.

    Stable boots, Oxford or brogue,
    Shoes, Oxford or brogue.
Sport shoes, the world's your oyster, but brown suede
Chukka boots are fine in the desert,
Chelsea boots are better suited to being worn with trousers (plus the elasticated sides tend to fail over a period of time).
Balmorals were a short-cut/time saver for Guns attending shoots who preferred to avoid wearing buttoned spats when spats were the typical weather protection for your hob-nailed footwear, but their use overlapped with more formal wear at times.

I always go for my oxfords as a prime choice, both brogued and smooth

I've worn chukka/brogan-type boots with a Kilt. they aren't perfect, but they seem to work.

My son’s feet overheat in anything but sandals. We’ve talked about whether he’d like to try wearing a kilt, but if he can’t wear sandals… ?

In Saxon wear, a waistcoat is not fully buttoned. Does that standard cross over to Highland dress? Or because things are cut shorter is it appropriate to have a waistcoat fully buttoned?

I see it go both ways. Some wear their waistcoats buttoned fully or the bottom not.

I often wear Canadian combat boots with my kilt when I am dressing casual and not wearing my ghillie brogues. They work quite well if you're out in the snow.

The shoe you are calling chukka is very similar to the Brogans/Bootee worn during the American War between the states.

Have you checked it out yet? Penny loafers with kilt hose, maaayyyybe…… a full-length mirror and other people can help you judge how it looks. To me, it has too much of a vibe of school girl. But maybe flashes would make it more masculine-looking; I dunno….

Chukkas were copied off a South African style boot. They do have iterations in smooth leather with a more formal style.

Seems a shame to have designed such an elegant shoe to walk in the mud and water. For sure, Prince Albert never cleaned and shined HIS OWN shoes.
