Renn Faire Boots with a Modern Kilt?

  • What are renn faire boots?
Well, essentially they are those really tall fashion boots made to look quasi-medieval or like something out of a fantasy adventure movie. You see them at renaissance fairs, conventions, steampunk events, folk music or metal concerts, etc.
But can you wear tall fantasy boots with a kilt in day to day life?
Do renn faire boots look god with a modern kilt? Or should you only wear them with a great kilt?
You may not be surprised to find out Rocky and Erik disagree a bit on this one!

The photo of the high boots with large buttons up the side you flashed on the screen looked cool but I'm with Rocky as well . Renn Faire boots are just too over the top for me . I do love how you two are a good balance between your personal likes as it presents a balanced perspective on highland wear . You two are also more open to things you wouldn't wear yourself and accept differences of opinion and tastes . Better than I can do myself sometimes . Cheers .

Love my Rennie boots, I wear Earthwalker Boots, actually the Lash Moc that is top of calf height. They are a little ostentatious for everyday wear, but I do wear them in the summer while hunting. In Central Texas it can be over 100° while out hunting wild hogs, and a kilt with high boots (to protect the shins from brambles and cacti) is just the ticket for hot weather.
I also wear them when I am group cooking (outdoor dutch oven/campfire type events) or for family events, just like my kilts, they are a conversation starter and a great way to introduce others to a lifestyle or adventure (like ren faire) that they otherwise wouldn't know about.
Most of the time I just wear my hikers but the Earthwalkers have their place, especially for outdoor events. Great video and point of view.

I love my Son of Sandlar peasant boots for ren faires. I do wear the hose and fold them over the top of the boot.
I also love a pair of Medieval Moccasins up to the knee ‘boots’, and yes, with hose. These are great for hotter weather.
I haven’t worn either of these out in the general public - so far, just at ren faires.
Get a mirror and play “dressy-Bessie” and try different looks. Find a friend who you can trust to tell you if something looks good or not.

I got to say, for everyday wear with a modern kilt I would have to side with Rocky on this one. Renn Faire boots are just a little too ostentatious, and wearing them on the regular is gonna mark you as a character, which you may or may not appreciate.
I'd opt for more downdressed, functional boots for everyday wear. Most "high" hiking boots will barely ever exceed 1/3 up the calf, and even your tallest bovver boots tend to fall a good few inches below the knee. I'd consider the latter to be either utilitarian (a utilikilt and steel toe workboots), or fitting in with the whole mod/punk/trad skinhead aesthetic (with a royal stewart kilt perhaps?)
so my choice for really casual daywear boots would be really nice high quality hiking boots.
We have a bootmaker over here called Alt-Berg. ludicrously expensive but the best boots I've ever owned. I used to have a pair of their veldthog country boots, they've discontinued them and I haven't yet bit the bullet to buy a replacement pair of their high country boots. their military/police microlite boots are also very nice.

I own a pair of Sandlar's, but before I got them I wore my biker engineer boots & folded my kilt hose the Cuff at the very top of the boot. I do the same with my Sandlar's & have gotten compliments (at my Ren Faire) for the look.

Have a pair of Son of Sandlar's. With most kilt hose (that is over my kneecap) I'm able to get a double fold, just over the top of the boot just below the knee as you described. I get a lot of compliments on the look of my footwear. I also have folded kilt hose over motorcycle engineer boots and get compliments on that as well.

For casual I wear a pair of black leather "not shine" DC skate shoes and high calf white socks.
Then formal I wear kilt hose flashers and a nice pair of black leather "high polished" hush puppy's. Witch is a brand of formal shoe.

  • @ScottAndScarlettsDarkHumor

I have ren faire boots and I LOVE them. However for casual wear as a serial kilter I just wear normal boots with kilt hose. I prefer the piper hose personally just because people get the point with the sporran and the thick cuffs and it of coarse looks good. I use solid color piper hose.

I just came here from the "Can you wear a sash" where you said you shouldn't wear a sash as a man, and that it's a women's accessory. Is that outfit to your left a women's outfit or perhaps they are only okay in specific formal occasions?
I bought my kilt at a renaissance festival with a group of friends (they all bought the hybrid half canvas half tartan hybrid kilts but I stuck with traditional pure wool black watch tartan) and the vendor talked me into buying the sash (I think he was desperate to move as much merch as possible), and I was a little disappointed to hear that men shouldn't wear them. I only wear my kilt in casual affairs (whiskey festivals, beer festivals, and now renn faires (which I typically don't go to, but now that I bought so many accessories (several sporrans, hoses, belt, buckle, pins, black ankle boots, celtic dirk, flashes, etc.) I feel now I should in order use them more often because I've invested far too much not to, haha)

The item in the photo is a Piper's Plaid. It's actually 3.5 to 4 yards long, full width of the bolt (54 to 60" wide) and wraps around the torso and is only worn by bagpipers. Not all bagpipers wear it, but when it's worn, it's generally by pipers.
A sash is just 2.5 yards (approx) and is only 12" wide or so. That's what we were referring to as 'a woman's accessory'.

The knock off that you showed is andar boots. Andar is good I have them. I got them cause they are very "combat boot/hiking boot" they are kinda rough to break in but they are worth the money. I bought some inserts just to make em more comfy but I swear by them. Now keep in mind I'm not a full time rennie if I was on the road I would invest in a one of the expensive names

Without giving yourself frostbite in the winter, going barefoot is always fun, in the wilderness. Moss and grass is great, cactus not so much. Now I would never recommend it in town because people are filthy, they spit, they don't pick up after pets.

Not historical? If by "historical" you mean as reinvented in Edinburgh in the late 1700's during the revival, I agree. On the other hand if you are trying to say that 'real' highlanders, wearing 'real' kilts, (the belted plaid), which peaked in about 1720 and was extinguished by 1746, NEVER, or even rarely, wore calf high boots, I don't believe you.

    • @demon13doc
      @demon13doc Před 4 lety +2

Due to the high cost of boot leather at the time, knee high boots would have most likely only been affordable to the clan chiefs and the like. The poor highlanders just had the gillie shoes or were, more often than not, just barefoot. But to say that no one wore them is silly.
