- In this video, I am restoring a rusty World War I Fighting Trench Knife and Scabbard. This is an Austrian trench knife m17. I found this knife in the woods on the battlefield. The knife is very rusty.
I decided to remove the rust from the knife and restore it. I hope you enjoyed my knife restoration.

That was the first time I had ever seen someone add filings to the hardening agent to fill in holes, very nice!

Loved this restoration. My only constructive criticism: instead of filling the scabbard the way you did, I would've used body solder, to keep it 100% metal. Also, I think I would've distressed the scabbard paint a tiny bit, so it matches the condition of the knife better. Great job though, the result looks beautiful and is respectful to the item's history.
I'd love to own one like that one day.

Клинки штурммессерів не воронились, піхви фарбувались в зелений колір. Кінчик клинка варто б було підварити і оботочити. А так робота гуд.
Дякую. Піхви були зелені і чорні. Ніж так, не воронився, але це для захисту від корозії. Маю і без вороніння. Щодо кінчика, то без варіантів… там обламані 3 мм, товщиною 1 мм. Навіть якщо наварити, зточити, то при найменшому навантаженні відпаде.

Quedo bien pero no le limpiaste con una varilla o un alambre el interior de la funda para quitarle un poco el oxido, o sea rascarle. Y es comentario para mejorar. Saludos.

@@ReXtorer Та не має за що. Як показав мій досвід, я відказався від використання шпаклі. Є приклад у мене на каналі, як я реставрував піхви від штика для карабіну Маузер. Там взагалі не було використано шпаклі.

Ready for duty for another 100 years or so and an archeologist digging this up again in a thousand years to come will be impressed. The original manufacturer would also approve of the improvements in restoring the scabbard. Apart from the Glock knives, modern issues, especially American, tend to be bulky while these European blades from the past are much more streamlined and versatile, suitable not only for wearing on the belt but as boot knives as well. Still applicable for modern sportsmen and for service members.
That stupid marketing along with CZcams nonsnece and marketing trends, not only have spread a ton of misinformation to people (especially, collecotrs and noobs that have little to zero knowledge on the subject), worse than that, they've also managed, to turn the most usefull tool in our everyday need to survive, to something that's useless. (Super thick, super heavy, stupid designs, that have to do only with looks and nothing with performance, or practicality) Knife has suffered a lot of damage, from these so called CZcamsrs and that stupid marketing trends.
@@greekveteran2715 Absolutely, I have a couple of Pakistan or India made repros from Windlass of questionable quality but the manufacturer claims these were made to the same specs of materials and workmanship available to the AXIS and Central Powers during the wars. I prefer these to most of the silly commercial "Rambo-esque" renditions you refer to. The Glock field knives, Gerbers, and classic US GI designs from KBar and Camilis and Ontario are not too bad though dated in most iterations.

I love to see old relics restored, though when you started scraping it and using the wire brush I had the urge to hide under the table and cry. Here in the UK you stumble across treasures like this now and again in second hand or charity shops, heck even my great grandad brought home a German hand grenade amongst other things that he kept for years and used to heat it in the stove to be used as a bed warmer on cold nights ...... Until it detonated one day and painted him and the room in puree steak and kidney pie destroying the stove, great granny was not pleased and acted accordingly, with a skillet. My grandad got a full WW2 Nazi officers dress uniform, but it got stolen while he was bedridden in Gibraltar after getting shot in the battle of Monte Casino. My dad was serving in the RAF during the Suez crisis, all he brought back was a case of malaria, he was heart broken because he wasn't allowed to bring his monkey home with him.

Electrolysis does not remove rust from steel. All that sh1t floating came from the sacrifice electrode. On the knife, just bubbles, perhaps gas H2, depending on what you're using as electrolyte. Anyway, I like your job and the final result
Primarily I use electrolysis for very rusty items and rust is perfectly removed. Thank you!
@@ReXtorer yeah I know a lot of people do that but in terms of chemistry, nothing happens... the bubbles formed are hydrogen gas on the cathode where the H+ ions are reduced. Eventually, this gas can mechanically remove some small plates of ferric oxide (rust) on the surface. Some people think that some Fe3+ ions could be reduced on cathode too but it doesn't. And even if it could, the metalic iron formed will not attach to the surface of the material. Anyway, the process is not perfect and we can see that when you have to brush a lot after the electrolysis is done. If you can't remove rust with sandblaster some rust remover products will work. But in both cases, you'll lose material on the surface too.
