- She's the face of the storyline for Zendikar Rising, but what happened in her past that lead to her fighting Nissa for control of the Lithoform Engine?
From her relationship with Sorin to her connection to the Eldrazi, learn all about her life as we ask the big question: Who is Nahiri?

I love that rocks in Zendikar drink a lot of milk
According to the story description of the stone forging, the best lithomancers make tools from the metal in the earth. So they use the iron and possibly cow milk’s calcium to make things.
Kind of like Koth of the hammer.
Despite the issue WotC has with writing lore for.. everything, I really enjoy Nahiri and her slow drive towards madness. Being stuck for a thousand years in solitary confinement is more than enough to destroy anyone, and sitting there manipulating yourself only makes reality hit harder. I do think the set required a few more cards detailing what she has going on in her head or more of Nissa's reactions to her. If only Sorin had said sorry originally.
I think Nahiri is well written and makes a good antagonist force. The long spanning background, the relationships, the emotional and practical drive - everything just clicks. Everyone is quick to villanise her, but there's enough there to ponder and empathize. To me it's the old gray area thing - she's mostly misguided, hurt, and delusional. I'd much rather see her get the redemption treatment over the simplistic evil final boss. Her talents and connection to Zendikar could, after the conflict, be put to great use in restoring this much beloved plane. It's also unfair to put her against Nissa and the other Avengers since we all know who wins in the end.
And the Avacyn thing... ugh.
I would like to see a Ryan Arcanum style explanation of we the players as different color-pie mages. That would be pretty neato.
I believe the idea of the magic stoneforged swords is that kor lithomancers draw out every trace of metal that's in a boulder and pull it together to make a pure metal blade. It's kind of a matter of perspective whether you see metal ores and such as stone or something else, but I totally dig the flavour!
Soooo they’re inverted earth benders
@Mullerornis But earth benders can bend metal only if it has particles of rocks (sand? soil?) in it. Nahiri does the opposite, so she's an anti-toph. She's even able to see, and this is the last piece of evidence we needed. I rest my case
@@acciaio yes but more cientifically accurate
13:10 This is part of why Elesh Norn and the other White Phyrexians are probably the scariest ones of the Mirran generation. Green has no organization, Black is prone to infighting for power, Blue is more focused on perfecting the act of compleation than actually enacting it, and Red is strong-willed enough that they don't like the other Phyrexians. But the White Phyrexians? Unified in their fanatical pursuit of forcing their twisted ideal of a compleated multiverse upon anyone they can. Even other Phyrexians.
i don't know man, if jin estudies enough about the blight he can eventually figure out how to destroy the phyrexians in less steps lol, i always saw jin-gitaxias as some kind of a batman, give that dude enough time and he will be your worst nightmare since he was the one capable of turning karn into hes puppet.

Yes.
You can’t spell” MTG mega Karen” without “Karn”!

@Rick Liao Simplified, you can’t spell Karen without Karn.
Let's hope she does not make a super smart self-absorbed and crazy gollem.

@@darkmystic7764 It's already canon, my dude. It's already canon...
I just drunk a glass of water, when: "stone drink milk" and I spat my water everywhere. You did it you clever boy!
Pre-mending Nahiri I emphatized with greatly, I actually love the character because of it, on top of loving the lithomancy. My hope that she wouldn't be the villain character squashed, I still wish good things for her, though not for her to succeed in using the Lithoform Core to 'silence' the Roil.
For real, she started out great then $% hit the fan.
It's kind of depressing to see how isolation has really warped Nahiri. She's not really a villain in my opinion, she's just severely misguided. Her only friends were sorin and ugin. She thinks they both abandoned her but she doesn't know that ugin died which in my opinion would've made her want to fight against bolas. For all the faults Sorin has, he really did love avacyn. The flavor text of "anguished unmaking" proves this to be true. If you remember, when avacyn was going insane due to emrakul, sorin wanted to heal her. She said if she wasn't the daughter he had wanted, they would battle again because she would not yield to a monster. Sorin was most definitely heartbroken by this and when he killed her, her last thought was "I am avacyn. I am to protect." Sorin most definitely blames Nahiri for this seeing as how she led emrakul to innistrad in the first place. Sorin most likely sees this as an unforgivable betrayal of one of his daughters killing another. Sorin's not a good guy or a bad guy. He's just doing what he thinks is best for him and his home and that doesn't translate well with nahiri who kinda does/is doing the same thing. Sorin wasn't the best measuring stick of how someone let alone a planeswalker is supposed to act and this followed by many many years of isolation combined with sorin locking her up in the helvault followed by more isolation has to have destroyed her mentally and she was just stewing on how this is all sorin's fault and her home was laid to waste and so many more awful thoughts and feelings with no way to talk about them or deal with them. I feel that nahiri and sorin need to meet and fight it out. I think an entire story of them being forced to be with or around eachother would be great for both of their characters because neither of them have really been shown the error of their ways. It's just like the vraska and Jace situation in my opinion but in this case I believe it's far more extreme because of how serious the eldrazi were and how badly the death of avacyn affected sorin. They don't have to become friends but they don't have to be bitter rivals either. If sorin helps heal zendikar then I think nahiri helping to create a new angel with sorin in avacyn's memory would make the entire magic storyline alot less crappy because of how poorly the last few stories have been. Sorry for talking so long but I had alot more to say than I initially thought. What are your thoughts on what I said? I'd love to hear them!!
It's fine if Sorin loved Avacyn but Nahiri also loved Zendikar, and Sorin promised to help her protect that before he made Avacyn or the Helvault. Sorin seems to not understand actions have consequences, and his action of building the Helvault caused him to miss Nahiri's signal for help.
Ugin was dead, but Sorin doubled down on his "it's not my fault," which to me does make him a 'bad' guy. He did not empathize with Nahri's situation at all and did not even suggest a way to restore her faith in his original promise.
I think things between the two of them are at a point where they can't (and shouldn't) be worked out. I think Magic is best when some characters are in conflict with each other, even for a very long time, because that drives events and creates opportunities for character development. Getting them back to being friends or even neutral toward each other and creating a replacement for Avacyn brings us to comic book territory, where things keep getting done and undone and the storylines end up feeling really static.
I like that there are lasting impacts from the Helvault. I like that Avacyn is gone and her death weighed heavily on Sorin, who had previously not often shown emotion about anything. The Magic story has been suffering lately but it's not because of a shortage of "happy endings." If anything, keeping the animosity between Sorin and Nahiri might be the best thing they can do to help the story at this point...but that's just my opinion ;-)
I may be crazy but I'd really like to see nahiri and sorin get together, sort of like an enemies to lovers relationship. I love Nahiri, Sorin and Narset, they're my three favorite pw
The Voldaren-Markov wedding theory is so True.
We never knew how Sorin got out of the wall but we know that Olivia took the parasite blade and she actually knew where Sorin was stuck. In War of the Spark Sorin has the Parasite Blade, so he may have arranged a wedding with olivia if she freed him. As far as we know Markov manor is devastated and Edgar Markov Whereabouts haven't been told so this leaves Sorin as the Only pure Markov available for the wedding.
I love that Soren and Nahiri yell each other’s names anime-style in MTGA
Loved the story , and that mustache is just as amazing as always , I still want to see you on game nights one day
I would love a set called Hellvault rebuilt. But now it's the demons imprisoning angels. We have gritty angles with dirty wings using handmade weapons in the set while the demons look regal in their dark shiny armor.
I laughed sooooooooooo hard at the casting choice. Just brilliant hahahah
The irony is that by drawing Emrakul to Innistrad Nahiri divided the Eldrazi forces leaving the Gatewatch to fight two instead of three making a victory possible.
That's a very good point.
I'm not sure what quarry you dig up all this info from but I appreciate the efforts. You guys rock!
I'm a former Magic the Gathering player from waaaayyyyy-y-y back in the late 1990s but still observe this amazing game from afar; from time to time read the Flavor Text of new cards; checking out the artwork on new cards; checking out what's new in Magic the Gathering from its storytelling portions. Saw that episode of 'Zendikar Rising' on CZcams and was blown away yet had many questions. This explanation really helps. Thanks. Thanks a lot.
Love the video! I feel like the whole Nahiri / Sorin arc can be summed up with the Ron Burgandy meme of “well that escalated quickly.”

Thank you for these videos. It's so nice to get the story in a nicely packaged simple narration without the crowded clickbait thumbnails in most videos.
Why would a character like Sorin wanted to save multiverse? Because he lives there!
Loved that video, the first I've ever saw of Magic Arcanum ❤️
Imo Emma Stone playing Nahiri could actually work very well.
I really wanted her walker card to turn lands into blackblade-type equipment.
Ryan, thank you for explaining Nahiri, I feel like it’s a follow up to the sorin video!
Edit: and yeah I think nahiri looks like a Karen
I think that this is truly The Best MTG lore dedicated CZcams channel! Thanks for your hard work and an interesting storytelling)
Been reading the story and both Nahiri and Nissa are frustrating! Neither are willing to stop, listen, and wait. Jace wants to understand what the core does before using it, which Nahiri eventually relents, but Nissa isn't having it at all. Both are in such a rush to get what they want. If I were there, I would've pulled a Sorin and just checked out. Let the two have their cat fight.
Not sure if 'pulling a Sorin' has the best connotations here.. ;o)
Thanks for providing another humorous video Ryan. Loved it! To be honest though I can't say I really blame her for the way she is. It kinda feels like a poetic justice to me personally. I think her character deserves more time in the spotlight. I'm glad she has an opportunity to shine in this set.
Would love to hear about Sorin! As he's the first planeswalker that got me into magic!
great stuff Ryan!! Always love your videos. I really think the Sorin/Nahiri story is a tangled one. Sorin is always going to do what suits him, but also does things that..don't help him much. Nahiri is only trying to help people, but doing so by...bending a plane to her will... hmmmm i think they both have a bit more development to go before they get it right. I would love to see a set that really tackles the rivalry/war between the two!
Thanks for this video! Nahiri is my favorite Magic Character and one of my favorite fictional characters. I love everything about her. I'm curious about your thoughts on the more recent chapters of the Zendikar's story. I am under the impression her idea of using the Core was correct, but her vision of the plane was still clouded in anger and old memories, so she wasn't the right person to use it. But I found it a bit underwhelming. Still, I have no idea what future plans they'll have for her now that she's vashined again.
I watched the one after and had to come see this. You all did great and now I’m waiting on a Innistrad lore from original to eldritch moon.
Well, first and foremost, this actually cleared up some of Nahiri's backstory for me even if it just confirmed that she's still mostly in the wrong. So thanks. It also made me consciously realize that it's nice to have another White-aligned villain even though we technically just had one three sets ago in Theros: Beyond Death. (Not that it really counts given both its utter lack of a real story and even the pitiful summation having Heliod only really show up at the beginning and end, but I am digressing.)
As much as I would still like to see Nahiri at least somewhat pay for making Innistrad even worse than it already was (and how obnoxious Nahiri the Harbringer was design-wise), maybe it's actually better if she gets to live a while longer. After all, outside of Elesh Norn and arguably Sorin, the other few existent White-aligned villains beyond her are either dead (Konda, unfortunately Dovin) or incapacitated (Heliod). So it's almost a shame that Nahiri's so stubborn that her getting killed once Zendikar Rising's main story comes to an end seems the most believable outcome unless she "wins" and effectively wrecks Zendikar too (again)--almost.
I mean, if War of the Spark taught us anything (in terms of story), WotC are averse to letting their planeswalkers die. In the whole plotline, only 2 or 3 named planeswalkers actually died, right? Gideon, Domri, and Dovin Baan (after the fact) were the only actual named planeswalker fatalities, I think.
@@Thesaurus_Rex True, but overall named White-aligned planeswalkers also currently have the highest death count between Venser sacrificing himself for Karn and Elspeth getting killed by Heliod, with it being ambiguous just how alive she is after her escape given the utter lack of story we got. Their bad luck may well continue too since of the planeswalkers who are associated with Ravnica and who stayed for a while after War of the Spark, it's two White-aligned ones in Kaya and Teyo that closest to the silly sleeper agent that is Rat. So we'll see what happens there when we inevitably go back to Ravnica for the fourth time, especially since Jace is never dying and both Vraska and Ral are more popular.
That said, I would genuinely laugh if the next planeswalker who dies is Sorin and not just because it would fit the "curse".
@@MusicoftheDamned I _think_ Elspeth is considered to be alive now since Erebos let her walk free and she can planeswalk again. But don't forget about the also dead Serra! I feel like Nahiri is likely to survive, if only because her "planeswalker that cares about equipment" niche is otherwise unused design space, and she's the only Boros planeswalker we have right now. And because they probably don't want to kill a character they've invested this much character development into, especially before Sorin and Nahiri can really resolve their beef.
Gruul Planeswalkers have it rough too, though. All of them have died or otherwise experienced horrific trauma. Domri is dead, Xenagos is dead (apparently Theros is a dangerous place to be a planeswalker if your name isn't Ashiok), Samut had her home plane essentially destroyed and then had to fight all her dead friends, and Sarkhan had his mind broken by Bolas (though calling Sarkhan Gruul probably isn't accurate, since he's been 4 different color identities).
@@Thesaurus_Rex Oh, right. Easy to forget about poor Serra when she's been dead since before Planeswalkers (unfortunately) got cards and when her card from Modern Horizons 1 seems to see no play.
Speaking of Modern Horizons 1 does make me remember why I intentionally ignored two Gruul planeswalkers dying with one even technically being erased from existence in Xenagos's case: even after losing two planeswalkers, Gruul still somehow has *four* dedicated planeswalkers now that the broken card that is Wren and Six exists and given Arlinn Kord is likely to stay Gruul than become mono-Green like she was in War of the Spark.
That is absurd when Boros still only has one, which is unfortunately Nahiri after both Ajani and Huatli decided it wasn't for them, and half of the other two-color combinations barely have two or even one. So while I can see Nahiri staying alive for an out of-story reason like that, I can't say that I care for it. It doesn't help that it's impossible to tell where Sorin and Nahiri's conflict really stands presently after the ineptitude of War of the Spark either.
The flickering lands sounds like an awesome Nahiri planeswalking ability
There needs to be, at some point, a Nahiri Planeswalker that makes Wall artifact tokens that exiles creatures and planeswalkers under them, so we can finally put Sorin in the wall in game.
Nahiri, the Harbinger had a -2 that exiled nonland permanents (though artifacts and creatures had to be tapped), but it didn't create walls. I have a feeling that was the implication, though.
there is an enchantment that turns stuff into walls... doesn't work on planeswalkers tho
What ever happened to Ghoulcaller Gisa and Nahiri's, uh, alliance/friendship? Did that just kinda fall apart after the whole Eldrazi thing or?
hmmmm "defeat" is kind of a strong word when the only one who actually stood up to Emry was Liliana amped up by the chain veil and even then she only hold her for a couple minutes at best until Emry mind-controled nissa, used her to channel mana to fuel a spell casted by mind-controled tamiyo (one she did not know) and went her merry way to the moon
Really well done. I love the way you tell these stories
Glad you enjoy it!
Imagine a super buffed rock having a cow farm
From what I understand, Sorin was able to escape the wall on Innistrad because of the interplanar beacon. Instead of fighting it like other planeswalkers, he focused on it, letting him ignore the pain he was in long enough to get to Ravnica.
I have seen people attribute it to the beacon but I don't buy it. If watching his home be torn apart by Emrakul wasn't enough motivation to ignore the pain, I don't see how some sparkly lights in the sky would do it either.
it took me so long to notice that this wasnt a flavor win :(

Nahiri is flat out a villain.
And I hope she gets her comeuppance (magic pun intended)
i agree
She's no Ob Nixilis, Tezzeret, Tibalt or Bolas. She truly believes what she's doing is good, but she's like a stubborn old lady about it.
An anti-hero would be a way more accurate description. She genuanily believes in the greater good for her plane (at whatever cost, but, good afterall). She never does stuff for the sole purpose of villany or suffering of others per sé (other than revenge against those that aggraviated her plane, hence avenging it). The girl is crazy, though, but not a villain.
@@GranMaese Never doing things for the sole purpose of hurting others. There we go.
I think it would be rad if in a future version she can steal opponents lands until end of your next turn so that way you can get that boost in mana to help cast other spells and limit what your opponent can do for a turn. It's like she is destroying land and reviving it later. The same card could have discard and draw landfall mechanic as a passive or have a plus/minus where you can equip artifacts for 2 less. Then final ability would be neat if she interacted with enchantments, as those are a great way to help balance not only the board but your creatures.
What do you think?
I think a design like that would be rad, yes.
When you said RW could do something with exiling lands, it made me think of Ajani Vengean. His ultimate is exiling lands.
What bothers me much is that Nahiri focused her revenge solely on Sorin, Ugin also didn't help, Ugin also decided to put the spaghetti monster in zendikar. Was Nahiri's also aiming to bring an Eldrazi to Tarkir?
Ugin was at least "dead" when she tried to call which is different than Sorin's excuse. I'm not sure if she planned to punish Ugin after having her way with Innistrad though.
Lord and Lady Markov of Innistrad!
Nahiri flavor win when? I need it!!!
Magic Arcanum, you forgot.

Yep, I'll include her in my full recap of the Zendikar Rising story, which should be out next week.
Big love for the channel, Ryan’s moustache is more voluptuous than ever. I'm a big fan of Sorin though so I hate Nahiri, lol
Graphic Quality is Tier! Keep it up
Ryan, not trying to correct anything, just wanting to input a bit of lore for clarification of a thing that seems to pass by a lot of people.
We should remember that the Hellvault's main usage (besides stopping planar threats and being Nahiri's and Avacyn's prison) was to be used by Avacyn herself to seal ALL demons that were so powerful they couldn't simply be killed.
We know by lore that Nahiri, while in her stasis inside her prison was able to sense Avacyn's sealment, which mean so did the demons when she was sealed herself. Thousands of years in "solitude", added by the influence of all the greatest demons of Innistrad sealed before and after her imprisioment are sure to drive someone insane.
There are a lot of people that simply look at Nahiri and see a petty stubborn brat, while not taking into acount that simple fact. She is a villain, and the things the did and could do are terrible and cruel, but there is much more to her actions than the simplicity some paint her.
Sorry for the lenghty (and probably misspelled) comment, english isn't my native language, but as one of my favorite Walkers, i wanted to take this chance to bring a point that people hardly consider or think about her. Your videos are amazing, and keep the great work bringing us amazing lore and content ❤

You'll never convince me that Stoneforge Mystic isn't Nahiri. The art clearly says she is the same person.
that pic in 0:44 will haunt me
thank you thank you thank you
You heard it here first folks, 2021 Sorin + Olivia Markov
Now I want to make a sorin ugin and nahri deck
Oh man! Best surprise of the morning!
Here is my idea for a slightly more flavorful Nahiri.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Nahiri, Stoneforge Paramount
1RW
3 base loyalty
Passive: Equipped creatures you control have +1/+1.
+2: Target land you control becomes an equipment artifact with Equip 2 and "equipped creature has first strike if this is a mountain and vigilance if this is a plains." in addition to its other types.
-3: Exile target creature or planeswalker with converted mana cost less or equal to the number of lands you control. Its controller may search their library for a basic land card and put it onto the battlefield tapped.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Nahiri can weaponize your lands over time, or she can sacrifice herself to take out a target. I thought that was pretty symbolic of her rage and "at all costs" frame of mind.
This seems fairly balanced in my opinion, but I am sure somebody will prove me wrong. Let me know what you all think.
Missed these character episodes!
Nahiri. Aka, "Sorin's Ex-wife." I call her that because of the relationship she once had with Sorin, that got betrayed, and then bitterly messed up, when Sorin decided he had "better things to do than mess around with the Eldrazi sealed on her home world."
The way that these two planeswalkers keep trying to kick each others' asses, every single time they meet, regardless of what else might be happening around them, just reminds me of a long divorce (in their case, ridiculously long). They might have loved each other once, but now they can't even be in the same room together, without wanting to carve chunks out of each other, both literally and figuratively. Reminds me of my own divorced parents. Who separated not long after I was born, and now, forty years later, would sooner die a painful death than be caught in the same room together.
Will we be getting a back story for the Walking Dead cards soon? Would be nice to get an update on them for the release!
First off, I love that you release videos so frequently, and all of them are great. But really, is Flavor Win cycle continue with enemy color pairs? We have Boros Nahiri, Golgari Nissa, and Jace, "I'm not a clone I swear," Mirror Mage could fit into a Simic kicker deck. That just leaves Izzet and Orzhov. I'm fine either way, but you did say that series was faster to make than normal vids, and I really loved it.
I would like to make a few more of those but the next month is already pretty crowded with my full recap on the Zendikar Rising story and some spooky stuff I have planned for Halloween, but we'll see if I can fit something in :-)
@@MagicArcanum It's fine if it takes a while to return, anything you make is guaranteed to get my appreciation. This is the best Magic channel I've found!
Ok, so you know how we now have the new omnath in zendikar rising. And now (excluding partners) there are six 4 color commanders, but now one has 2and all the others have one. And the next set is Kaldheim. My prediction is that we see saskia on Kaldheim. And the Strixhaven, we get some kind of wizard/witch in another color pair. Then, I’m the dnd set, we get another, there are so many possible options so your guess is as good as mine. Then in one of the two innastrahd sets we get one final 4 color legend to round out the lineup.
I love WotC is at least keeping with the theme that the Pre-mending planeswalkers are trying to get some control/power back. Nicol Bolas wants to be a god, Liliana doesnt want to be a victim to anyone, Nahiri wants her plane back, etc...
Nahiri do be vibing tho.
Also, in the recent article, it’s revealed she still hates Sorin with a passion.
I'm just waiting patiently for a non-card game Magic the Gathering adventure video game on the PS5! :)
Huzzah! New video! But the question is, if you had stoneforger powers, what kind of weapon would you make? Apparently you can only make one and copies of the one 😉
I think I'd personally prefer either a dagger or short sword, or maybe arrows that I can load into the bow I carry.
Just those few seconds after you named Emma Stone... XD . Yeah, you made my day. Keep it real.
Nahiri - Wants security, safety for the peoples of Zendikar at the likely cost of their freedoms, and there will be a toll on the environment/makeup of Zendikar's wild fury and planar identity. She would make life easier at the cost of life being more interesting.
Nissa - Wants to protect the environment at all costs. She is unmoved by the plight in the everyday Zendikarian's life, in fact probably seeing it as a trial-by-wilderness that makes it's people grow strong or die, as a personal responsibility.
Hey look, it's the security/freedom paradigm that drives real world politics. There's compromise to be had here. Or a huge bloody war between Zendikar's inhabitants. That'd be way cooler.
I think it would be really cool if Nahiri won, and then used her power from her new MacGuffin, and aid from Tezzeret's MacGuffin, to overlay Zendikar onto New Phyrexia to invade it, in order to save Koth, the other planeswalker that cares about rocks. That's the setup we need to get Garrisons into a Standard set. And it would really piss off Karn.
And just in time for my B-day!
Next video: Who is Glen, Michone and Negan?!
When are we going to get a full breakdown of Zendikar rising?
They just published the last chapter of the story yesterday, so I should have my recap ready by next week.
I can't help but feel Nahiri was meant to be another Jeska, but the stories told with her haven't quite come together in a way that emulates that archetype.
13:22 Sorin genuinely didn't knew shit about Nahiri's call. He kinda trapped her on the Helvault out of desperation as she wouldn't believe him and started to threaten the plane.
i would absolutely put black in her color identity
A white a red and 3-4 generic
Exile 4 lands you control return 3 to the battle field taped
You may play an additional land each turn
So...Nahiri said ‘Make Zendikar Great Again’?
