  • I recently made a video where I compared the sharpness differences of 3 copies of Nikon AF-S Nikkor 50mm F/1.8 G at F4.5. I saw large differences and now I’m investigating this further. I’m determining sharpness profiles for 3 copies of Nikon AF-S Nikkor 50mm F/1.8 G. I’m also looking at lens center sharpness and corner sharpness separately and determine the sweet spot for Nikkor 50mm F/1.8 G.

Hi Tom! Thanks for the video. I just purchased this lens 2nd hand and so far quite happy about it. I do have a lot sharper lens (that costed an order of magnitude more), but for EDC, general purpose and for the price point it is quite a good compromise. I am not sure how you measured the sharpness but your observations just highlights that the sample variation is very significant: as my copy definitely the least sharp at f1.8. I will do the test on mine so that I can figure out its sweet spot and check if there is a dip at f4 and f10 at all so that I can avoid those apertures. Your testing protocol would be appreciated.

Hi! Thank you very much for your comments. This is a great lens. I do see quite a bit of variation between units, though. This is how I measure lens sharpness (czcams.com/video/wZq3SfQi3Xs/video.html) and this is the script I use for lens sharpness (czcams.com/video/S6_YhN74dag/video.html). I'm very curious how your experiments turn out. Kind regards!

Thanks for the great video. You are the reason why I bought this lens anyway 😅 I guess I will rather choose f/11 instead of f/8 in the future. With the bokeh and sharpness at f/1.8 I was confident already.

I do agree, with cheap lenses can be surprises, good and bad.
More expensive lenses have more/better quality control and are more predictable.

Hi! Yes, that's how it typically is. Kind regards!

All 3 lenses are likely used and their lifetime hardships are unknown. Since they are all plastic, the helicoid mechanism is also plastic and it's mechanical precision is key to optical precision. On top of that I believe those lenses are made in Chyna. It is unknown how tight is Nikon's manufacturing tolerance. Great job comparing.
