    Hi Atif... great bit of info you posted here! I have 530D 2004. I went to my BMW guy who I trust for many years. He said its fine to disconnect IBS (i had high battery drain message too) but he said bare in mind that the ibs is there to tell the alternator to regulate the charge to the battery. During high current items being activated for example, fan on full, lights, sound system full etc.... the ibs tells the alternator to pump up the the charge to the battery and when things are normal again the ibs tells the alternator to give a normal current... its doing this all the time to try and keep a constant charge to the battery. That's why some people will experience no problems and others will find a flat battery. That's why like you I've been lucky so far too. but one day you and I may find a flat battery. Anyway another tip from my bmw guy is this: if you turn your fan speed knob up to level 2, wait a few seconds then crank it up to level 3. If there's a problem with the ibs you will notice the fan speed won't go past level 2. That's because your computer knows there's a problem and cleverly restricts the speed of the fan to preserve your battery. When you disconnect the ibs cable you can crank it up to 3 and will go full speed. hope this helps... all the best Atif and your subscribers. :)

      Hi Andy, sorry for the late reply. Its a classic case of over-engineering gone mad. Olden day cars didn't have issues like fans not switching off and newer cars won't either. I've had this wire disconnected for 2.5years now and i've had no electrical problems (thank god). Don't worry, just disconnect it and start driving, you'll never think about it again.

    Hi, disconnecting the IBS will affect long term battery life as the alternator charge voltage will default and not vary with different temperature conditions (particularly in winter when the battery is cold). IBS also accurately measures battery temp off the negative post. First E60 I had had taken me a long time to work out the faulty IBS was not letting the vehicle go to sleep after the normal 15 mins delay (even with factory BMW DIS scanner). New IBS cost $1000+ trade in over here in AU.

      @@israelfreenation3469 Ye its a cable connected to the car battery, when you disconnect it the car should start up. If it doesn’t then it’s another issue. Also check you haven’t got anything draining your battery, turned out the cigarette lighter was draining mine. Disconnected and don’t have anymore issues with battery drain. Don’t leave the cable disconnected for long however, as this will cause long term issues. There is a reason it needs to be connected so it reads car electronics.

    That was a very nice video, especially if you're a technician. The point is, these are very expensive, very technical and complex vehicles, and it is inexplicable to me why so many people have fallen under the spell of BMW and purchase these vehicles. At this price level, you shouldn't be having these problems - what on earth are you paying for??? I had the high battery drain issue on my 2007 530i. The orange parking light went out every time, yet i still had the issue; I charged the battery to no effect; this was after spending countless thousands on trying to fix an excessive oil consumption problem (one qt every 1200 miles) - unheard of in any vehicle!). After 8 years of this, my solution was simple: I drove the vehicle into a Toyota dealer, and left with a brand new 2017 Camry. Good luck guys. I'm a recovering BMW owner, and will not look back again.

      Gardis72 I hear you and I have to agree. If you're paying this much for a car it should at least be reliable. I'm thinking about doing the same thing. I'm going back to Lexus. I drove my '96 es300 over 300k miles and that car never gave me any real or major issues. Thanks for posting this video though Atif.

    I'm in the US, so my steering is opposite yours, watching your video was a trip! :-)
    I have a 650 Convertible. Two days ago, out of nowhere, my car wouldn't start. I was stranded 35 miles from home at night. Emptied my trunk and got a guy to give me a jump with his cables. Drove home, turned car off, figured I'd take to auto parts store next morning for them to check my battery power. Decided when I turned the car off to give it a try, see if it would start, it did, no problem. I figured, must have been a fluke. Next morning (yesterday), went to car to see if it would start, and it did. I'm in outside sales and had appointments and needed to be able to go to them to pay my bills. I figured, no need to go to auto parts store. Fast forward a few hours, I'm ready to leave home, and car won't start. No cables at my house, and no neighbors home that could help. Had to cancel my appointments. Finally got a jump and drove straight to auto parts store. They tested battery and said it was bad, so I replaced it. Car started right up. I drove it about 10 minutes, turned it off, and went inside. Was there about 45 minutes. Came out, started car, got Increased Battery Discharge message on my display. Clock needed to be reset again. I didn't set it, just drove home.
    Need to figure out problem now. Are you suggesting that I get a trickle charger and put it under my hood and attach it somewhere, and at the same time, get a jump in the rear where the battery is? Not sure I understand what the 'plug' is that you are showing us in your trunk, or if I am suppose to connect it? Or disconnect it? I've read other forums that indicate that something isn't shutting off on the car. I have nothing running that I can see when I part it and turn it off, not even a cell phone charger plugged in. Any help would be appreciated.

    +Chris Ng Hi there. I am suffering from the same issue in the 2006 525i. I have spoken to a consultant in one of the dealerships in Poland and he explained that the issue with the error messages and trip odometer and clock is not caused directly by the low battery voltage itself. He said that when the car detects that the voltage drops below 12.5v, it assumes that some module software has frozen, making it unable to switch itself off, which causes the drain. To resolve it the main computer proceeds to reset all the modules, and hence some of the settings (like clock) disappear. He said that in his opinion this is a cock-up on BMW's behalf because for one this 12.5v threshold is set unnecesarily high, and often the reset occurs even when all the modules are fine. Also the problem could be avoided if the memory holding the clock and odometer settings would be supported with a small battery (like the one inside your PC computer) Anyway, after them not being able to diagnose the source of the drain, and having replaced and coded a new battery, the problem remained. I have now disconnected the IBS, and we'll see how it goes.
    Also 2 tips:
    1.If you have a keyless entry option, make sure that you don't keep a key too close to the car. This will prevent it from "sleeping" causing drain.
    2. (Doesn't work with manual tranny) To see whether the car goes into "sleep mode" lock it and observe from the outside whether the gear indicator light next to the gear leaver switches off. (Should take less than 30min)

Everything was fine untill i left it over night and try to start in the cold monring. I mean the car would start fine but it pops up " intensive battery discharge " and tells me to set the time. So i try to took the IBS sensor off and i got no more error message. But i measure the battery after a 1 hour drive from 12.6 something drops down to 12.25 over night. Is this normal at all ?

Keep an eye on it and see if it causes you any further issues with electrical power and charge. If not, just ignore it.

    Okay, it seems like your video has helped to resolve the problem (high battery drain) of most of your viewers. I've had my battery replaced yesterday morning, and it still drains the battery, due to this high discharge problem, I keep getting some errors/faults on my iDrive, such as "Suspension fault" or "Windows anti trap lock" or something like that. Even gives me "Transmission Fault" message, which is annoying.
    But, I've just gone out and disconnected the IBS cable at 2am, and will see how it goes in the morning. If the problem will be resolved, I'll buy you a drink mate. However, I will keep you updated, even if the problem will be still there.
    Fingers crossed it will be alright! :P
    Thanks for the tip Atif!

    Great of you to post a video helping others out but disconnecting the IBS sensor to stop errors this is like removing your letterbox to stop receiving gas bills!! It doesn't mean what's creating the bills will go away! Of course disconnecting the IBS will stop errors coming up, the IBS is telling the car that there is a battery drain, it's not causing the battery drain. If you're getting errors you need to systematically check the fuse circuits to find out what is causing the drain.

    • @DiscoFang
      @DiscoFang Před 6 lety

      just me Yes, occasionally it will fail like any part but you can't just assume the IBS is at fault. You need to scan the car to find out what is causing it. If your check engine light comes on you don't assume there's a fault with the light and just disconnect the bulb do you?

    • @justme3350
      @justme3350 Před 6 lety

      You dont understend how it actualy work..
      when ibs is foulty thay turn the ecu and everything on when car should be in sleep mode..
      Somethimes ibs is the main reason for drain battery..and car wont go to sleep mode....very offten..
      And wit svan the car you cant see ibs foult..
      And those ibs are.very sensitive to moisture and hard operate..

    • @DiscoFang
      @DiscoFang Před 6 lety +1

      just me I don't think you inderstand its function. If you're getting a battery drain message the IBS is the thing that detects the fault. If you disable the IBS like in this video, then any fault with any electronic component or relay will simply go on draining the battery. You may also have several items causing the drain including the IBS itself. Pulling the IBS is like replacing the car ECU if you have a misfire - yes sometimes a misfire is caused by the ECU but 99% of the time it's not. There are several common causes of battery drain in the E60 and a faulty IBS is a rare one. THE most common is a faulty component in the Comfort Access system. OR a micro relay in a control module.

    • @justme3350
      @justme3350 Před 6 lety

      Cassette Walkman but if you unplug the ibs and after that, i say 1 week the battery is good and car starts ok...than you know that ibs is foulty and is couse od battery drain...and thats only why you would disconect it..if the battery is draind after one night without ibs..than you connect it again and looking something else thats foulty..

But i can help it to wonder whether we are really solving the problem or just cutting off the reporting system? Hi Michelle connely, for some reason i'm not able to directly reply to your comment. However, you seem to have a completely different car. This is a very specific fix for a BMW 5 series (e60). You should probably go get the car checked out by a qualified mechanic. Different cars have different electrical wiring so the plugs I've disconnected won't apply to you.

    Hi Atif ,
    Quick question Mate..
    I replaced my battery in my 2004 530i , I don't have a drain battery message or anything like that , but my question for you is in regards of registering the battery. From what people have told me , after you replace the battery you need to register it with the computer system , so the alternator does not over charge the battery.
    When I installed the new battery this week , all my settings were still there , nothing has changed,.
    Do you think I should still have the system registered for a new battery , even though everything is acting normal with no issues?
    thanks

    I am starting to get the same error message. The problem is that yesterday I was stuck for a couple of hours in the mall parking 'cause my e61 didn't start. So when I inserted the knob key I can hear the click, the ccc starts, music etc, some lights in the dashboard, but when I try to press the "start/stop" button, NOTHING, NOT EVEN IGNITION.
    I was still able to access the "hidden menu" at 9 (where battery voltage is shown) was 11.7 volt.
    So what I did, I called a friend and I stared it with cables at the second attempt. In my case I think that is the battery the problem.

      @BLAZENYCBLACKOPS Před 4 lety

      Emanuel Lucescu if your battery is older than 4-5 years then you should definitely have it checked, it doesn’t cost much to replace it on your own, just make sure you get the correct battery for replacement. Also if you’re going to bring it to a mechanic make sure you bring it to someone who has a good reputation with fixing BMW’s, I can’t stress this enough, someone can be a good and honest mechanic but that doesn’t mean that they’re knowledgeable about BMW’s.
