Even though most interactions with strange humans fall somewhere between positive and neutral, and most interactions with bears fall somewhere between neutral and deadly, people are looking at the absolute numbers of negative interactions despite most people never interacting with (much less being trapped with) a bear, and despite most people endlessly interacting with and being helped by strange men in society.
It'd be the same as saying you'd prefer being trapped with a shark because less people are attacked by sharks than men. The shark is incapable of helping in any meaningful way and is likely to see you as prey, and there is no possibility of communication. A strange person (man or woman) is more likely to want to help than harm you, and even if they wanted to harm you, you have a much better chance against them than the shark or bear.

It depends. Bears are not usually hostile unless provoked thought you will likely provoke them by accident, and bears will likely kill you by accident even if they don't want to eat you.
If you appease a bear and de-escalate, you have a good chance of living. Unfortunately, almost no one knows or remembers how to do that in America (and generally most urban people) by my experience.
Tangent: also, the idea of getting trapped in the woods sounds really weird to me. Lost maybe, but you can find a way out. Then again, I know children that can land navigate better than some marines I know.

I mean, let's be fair. Statistically, most bear encounters end with the bear running away or leaving you alone. It's not a 100% chance that the bear will kill you. In fact, the more likely outcome is that it leaves you be.
The thing about this question, though, is that it's the same with men. Most people, man or woman, genuinely don't want to harm other people. Most encounters with strangers don't end badly. While we don't have numbers, I'd be willing to bet that encounters with male strangers don't end badly as often as encounters with bears.
Questions like these are harmful because they perpetuate this idea that random men are to be feared, but then if men take offense to that, then they're "the reason women are choosing the bear" or w/e. It's silly.
Plus, if a bear does kill you, I don't think people are considering that being mauled by a bear is one of the most brutal and painful ways to go out. Bears aren't tigers. They don't kill you quick and eat you later. The bear is gonna tear your guts out and eat you while you're still alive.

The guy telling statics shows how little people know what science is.
The reason why 1/2.1mill people are attack by bears per year is because the majority of the human race doesn’t live in the woods.
The reason why 1/7 women are attacked by men, at some point in their lives, is because the majority of the human race lives in cities.
In statistics there is the analysis of independent variables and there dependent variables, and then there is making a conclusion.
In order to make a conclusion you have to factor in other variables that a stat doesn’t take into account. This usually involves comparing other statistics IN THE SAME SUBJECT. By comparing like stats, you are verifying the accuracy of your data.
What this guy did is called cherry picking, and it’s the reason why science is now the modern day equivalent to the Catholic Church. He’s taking two completely separate stats and comparing them to push a narrative. While forgetting demographic’s as a huge variable that can alter the conclusion to a statistic.

How many encounter even a single bear one time in their entire life? Probably something pretty close to 1 in 2.1 million. 1 in 7 injured by a man at some point in their life? How many encounter several men even in passing almost every single day of their life? All of them.

    • @fnors2
      @fnors2 Před 27 dny +3

Yeah, many seem to ignore the math and the sheer scale of how many encounters between men and women happens in a day.
Let's do some low ball assumptions that an average person will pass by a 100 other person each day (probably a very low number for people living in a big city). Let's assume 50% of those are men.
If there's 3 billion women on earth, that's _150 billions_ man-woman encounters each _day._
If we restrict to the US it's about 7 billion encounters per day. A quick search gives me that maybe ~2000 women are murdered by strangers in the US yearly.
That's like 1 encounter in 1.5 billion that might lead to death.
An encounter with a bear is orders of magnitudes more dangerous than with a random man.

I feel like those who chose bear over a random guy either find piece of mind in knowing they're going to die or greatly overestimate their abilities.
The man might just talk to you or just pass you by. That just won't happen with a bear.
Only two types of bear are possible to overpower. Sun bear (it's relatively small, still has a human body count tho) and a lot less likely a black bear (you could theoretically do it). The remaining six won't give you that. They'll just kill you. Most people definitely can't stand still and keep calm when a grizzly runs at them.
So I'm confident in saying that there's basically only one that average person can survive.
And like... What is a random guy you meet in a forest gonna do? Ask you for directions? What are the chances that some dude you meet on some hiking trail is a sex offender/murderer/kidnapper/creep/stalker? Worst you'll see is some crackhead zooted out of his mind.

I dunno why that last woman was saying that "after 4B got popular, men made their own". One importy thing to keep in mind. Crimes follow most things in that the majority of outcomes are the result of a minority of sources. In other words, say we had a statistic thay 40% of people have been assaulted. For most people who commit the crime that's not a one off thing, it's a pattern of behavior. So it's likely that less than 5% of the population is responsoble for almost all of those assaults because they're doing it over and over.
Likewise, preditory peope target those they perceive as vulnerable. If you project am aura that makes you seem like prey, you're also far more likely to get targeted any time you come into contact with a predator, so it's also the case that certainly people unfortunately get targeted over and over which skews their perception of how many preditors there are not realizing that they're essentially a signal flair for such people.

I think it's time for some darwin awards. Make a TV show about parachuting women into bear infested woods. Pretty sure it'll turn out like that one episode of Survivor where they segregated based on the genders.
I find it funny that women are upset that men are having fun with this similar to the drizzle drizzle thing.

To them it's not bear vs. man. It's bear vs. Rapist. They already come in with biased and twisted view stemming from their hatred of men. That's all this is. A mew wave of hating on men.
Edit: Also, statistically a random man isn't going to do anything to you. The first thing that comes to my mind when I see a man in the woods is a park ranger, hiker, camper, fisher, and hunter. Men much like in bustling cities will mind their own business or simply check up on you. Again. These people didn't think all too much about this and don't know what they are talking about.

And then women proceed to wonder why men aren't as driven to be in a relationship as they were in the past.
