106-yr-old dances her way through White House meeting with Obamas

- Virginia McLaurin, a 106-year-old woman, was so excited when she met President Barack Obama and his wife Michelle that she busted out some dance moves with the two during her visit to the White House on Sunday, February 21.
McLaurin said she was very happy to meet US’ first black president and his “black” wife, all while holding Obama and Michelle’s hands.
The bubbly lady said, “I’m here to celebrate black history.” McLaurin, who is also black, was born in 1909 in South Carolina.

Made me cry like a little child. She was born in 1909. She witnessed the worst of the worst times but you know what she smiles and she lived to get to see Her President in His Office be a Black Man. She just fills me with so much hope. God bless Her Soul.

People forget that prior to Obama even in modern times, a black president in the White House was unthinkable. So you can hate his policies and even hate the man himself... but the fact that barrier was broken for eternity is truly amazing.

Historically what you said is unlikely, as she was born around the 1910’s, slavery in the US ended officially in the 1860’s, had her mother been a slave back then she probably wouldn’t had lived long enough for her to be born 50 years later, and even if she did she would be too old to have children. Maybe her grandparents or great grandparents, yeah.
The comment refers to HER life experiences and wisdom, as she lived through the worst of times, two wars, a worldwide crisis, the birth of technologies such as tv’s and cellphones, she saw queen Elizabeth being crowned, outlived people born much later than herself, the hate against her people grow as well as Luther King’s battle against it. That’s what the other person meant, don’t get me wrong, the historical scar brought to us by slavery is ugly and painful (and not yet healed), but overlooking everything this amazing woman went through and everything she lived to see to say “she is probably a slave’s daughter” is just as awful, don’t make black people slavery past the only thing going about them, we mustn’t forget the past, but we can’t allow it to keep us from living the present.

This woman was born in South Carolina during 1909, less than 50 years after the end of the American Civil War. Odds are very good that her grandparents were literally enslaved early in their lives, and she herself spent the first 56 years of her life living in a country where her right to vote wasn't guaranteed. She would not have been able to legally marry a white man until anti-miscegenation(interracial marriage) laws were ruled unconstitutional in 1967 when she was 58 and a handful of states resisted the removal of those laws up until her 91st year on Earth when Alabama became the last state to repeal their law... with nearly 530,000 Alabamans voting against repeal.
I don't say this to be a downer, but to really illustrate just how stark the contrast between what heights she might have believed achievable by a black man during her childhood and the heights actually achieved by this black man and exactly what that symbolizes to many Black Americans. God only knows that we still have a long way to go before anyone could credibly claim "racism is dead" or any silliness like that... but this is still one hell of a symbolic meeting to me. When Obama was running for President he ran on the ideas of 'hope' and 'change'... to this lady at least, I don't think 'change' is anywhere near strong enough to describe the difference between 1909 and 2008. And who knows how much longer she will live, but I don't see how she wouldn't have a lot of 'hope' for the future.

Ahhhh she’s so little and wonderful and full of life still! I can’t imagine being African American seeing the first black president and First Lady having lived during segregation, Jim Crow laws etc. We can all agree that there have been setbacks as of late, but this does make you hopeful in terms of how far we’ve actually come in 100 years.
