I think what happened is that Republicans kept stopping legislation that would actually help the poor. After many years, that made people so angry distrustful of all politicians that they rebelled and voted for a controversial troublemaker who claimed to have quick fix solutions.
Personally, I also think that the American dream is a falsehood and part of the problem. People who are smart and white are much more likely to be well off. Look at those tech billionaires who all were admitted to top-rank universities. But the American Dream is still used as a way to blame the poor for being poor, with all the false hopes and disillusionment that brings.
I weep for the United States.The country is rich enough to give everyone a good life, and yet, there are so many people scraping by. It's heartbreakingly sad, as well as hugely infuriating.
Obama, I think, understood all this at least in part, which is why we now have Obama care.

One of the crises right now is millions of kids who rely on school meals. That’s the only food some of them get all day and no school means no food. And there are people who want to blame and shame THE HUNGRY KIDS. Those school lunch ladies are real heroes! They provide nutrition every day on almost no budget that the Republicans are happy to cut every chance they get. My American Dream is for everybody to have enough food. There’s no excuse.

The unemployment numbers are a continuation of Obama’s policies. The rate of decrease did not change under Trump’s administration. Considering the fact that Obama took office during a recession, I’m quite impressed with his administration’s ability to get things back on track.
