10: Narrowboat DIY - Making an Ottoman Bed as a COMPLETE DIY NOVICE!

- My dad came up from Birmingham to help for a couple of days, and we spent many hours building this ottoman bed after Hefty taught me how to do the framework in the last vlog.
This vlog is a lot of me waffling away, making mistakes and almighty do-nots of narrowboat DIY but also contains some satisfying results!
Probably not perfection, but having a bed that I can easily lift makes my life so much easier since I have a bad back from a double-spinal fracture mountain fall a few years ago. Gaz and I are easily pleased, so I'm very happy with these few days of work!
We are Ash and Gaz, two self-employed performers living on our narrowboat while we do an (almost) complete DIY overhaul. We also write and play music as Butterfly Moon.

I recommend to everyone these books:
Boatowners Mechanical and Electrical Manual (4th Edition or newer) by Calder
The 12 volt Bible for boats by Brotherton (used only cause its an old book)
The Narrowboaters Builders Book (3rd Edition or newer) by Waterways
These books will not only help you but make your life much easier.

It’s getting there Pete! Though I’m currently still living in a chaotic mass of wood and tools 😝 But it’s nice to be in the building stage of things now. I’ve bought a neon green paint for the outside, although I imagine that’ll happen next year at this rate haha!
Great how good the bed looks. I'll keep in this mind gor any future projects. I would have had issues with the damn hinge, and pushing through the difficulties to get the job done. You are right - we all have different skills for the job that needs doing. I think i had been looking at a lot of DIY stuff online, instead of doing my own DIY. I will post a video with my bicycle issues on my channel. Not sure if that's an issue
@@sianwarwick633 I agree that I’m quite scatterbrained but I definitely wouldn’t put all women into the same category. I know and learn from a lot of formidable women - I’m just a complete novice because I’ve never done it before, and that’s also okay. Everyone starts somewhere.
Thanks for feedback on the edits - I’m still getting the hang of it so it’ll hopefully be a bit more slick with less time spent on showing mistakes in the future.

Thanks! I've given up on editing for a bit, but am storing up videos so the next one will probably be out in a couple of months. It's slow progress but fun figuring it all out! Trying to think of clever ways to put our musical instruments on the walls now. Thinking maybe a fold up keyboard shelf under the gunwales. Anyway, will keep you posted via videos!
