Landscape Photography, Holyhead & Rhoscolyn, Anglesey

  • This landscape photography outing takes in a couple of 'off the beaten track' locations, also another location which can only be described as 'iconic'! I start out photographing Gwenfaen's Pillar. This is a rock stack in a small cove called Porth Saint near Rhoscolyn on Anglesey. It's a very difficult climb down to the rocky beach to get a low angle on the Pillar, and an even more of difficult climb back up! I use a 35mm prime lens with a 10-stop neutral density (ND) filter to create a long exposure. This smoothes out the sea in the image and creates 'movement' in the clouds.
With this photograph in the bag, we head off to the White Arch or Bwa Gwyn in Welsh, which I photographed in February 2018 ( • Landscape Photography ... ). At that time I was unable to get a wide photograph to take in the entire promontory because there were harsh shadows lying across it. I'm fortunate this time to get the image I was after.
Then onto Holyhead Breakwater. Here I use my ND filter again for a long exposure images of the breakwater. I also do some hand-held landscape photography to capture images of boats and close-up detail of the marina.
Finally, we are at South Stack for sunset photography. A long climb down the steps on the headland to a low point under the South Stack lighthouse. The sunset isn't the best, but I do manage to capture another long-exposure photo. I'm reasonably happy with the image which you can see at the end of the video.
Please do comment to tell me what you think, and subscribe to join me next time!

That little beach at Rhoscolyn had some stunningly coloured large pebbles/rocks that would have made a great foreground. I’m gradually making my way through your posts David - great stuff 👍

Stunning last shot, David. For all the times i’ve been passed Porth Saint, I can’t remember seeing the pillar so isolated, the third frame was my favourite. Thanks again for all the effort you put into the vlogs.

Thanks a lot Brian. I'd been planning a high spring tide visit there for a while. But I hadn't reckoned with the easy path down to that part of beach being blocked by the sea!! 😬

Hi Tony, really glad you liked that one in particular. I don't normally shoot waves, but the light was at just the right angle, but kept coming and going. So I waited and waited. I was convinced that at some point I'd get just the right light and wave combination. 250 or so frames later and I got one!! 😀👍

I don't normally shoot that sort of close detail, But I saw it illuminated with that side light and by the time I'd got the handheld settings dialled in it was in shade. So I waited. And waited ... 20 mins later it lit up again for about 10 seconds!! I was glad I did wait though. 👍
