Surely one of the best trios ever, able to equal the Pamina's singing. Presumably the director wanted them to show up against the dark backcloth as der morgan prengt sich nicht ganz richtish.

And the lyrics show direct parallels to Pamina and her mother/the three ladies and the three spirits

I love the alto boy
The boys are in their 70s now and probably dress like this about the house in summer. I was 8 when this was filmed. I hope they had happy lives and are in good health. Me? Tablets keep me alive and hanging in there.

Adorable, wonderful ~ But, are the boys supposed to sprites or elves of the forest as seems to be the impression? If so, as commented below, their costumes might have been more creatively elfish, spritely even animalistically costumed as Oberon fauns. _Looking up the Mozart piece later one sees the thee are listed as "three child-spirits"._

There in the opera houses again and again are directors (Regisseure) seeing the "necessity" the "Three Boys" to blemish (verunstalten) or at least to kid (veräppeln) ...:( Why ???

I felt sorry for the boys having to wear these hideous costumes. I really would have expected better looking costumes, especially from a prestigious opera house such as Opéra National de Paris. Ludwig, Philipp and Mathias were one of the best "3 boy" trios ever produced by the Tölzer Knabenchor.

Look up the history of costume - before tight jeans street boys wore their braces to support any old 'trousers'
Why does every production of The Magic Flute make the three boys wear such ridiculous/embarassing costumes?!
