- The Etsumi-Nan Line (越美南線, Etsumi Nansen, "Etsumi South Line") is a railway line in Gifu Prefecture, Japan, operated by the third-sector operator Nagaragawa Railway (長良川鉄道, Nagaragawa Tetsudō). The line connects Mino-Ōta Station in Minokamo with Hokunō Station in Gujō. It is the only railway line operated by the Nagaragawa Railway. The line was originally operated by Japanese National Railways (JNR). JNR planned to connect the Etsumi-Nan Line and Etsumi-Hoku Line ("Etsumi North Line"), but the plan was never realized. The north line was later succeeded by West Japan Railway Company (JR West), while the south line was taken by Nagaragawa Railway, a newly founded third-sector company, in 1986. As the company name suggests, the line runs along Nagara River. As a consequence of Japan's declining population and frequent natural disasters (such as typhoons and heavy snowfall), the company is facing financial difficulties.

I love watching train POV footage. Makes you appreciate the beauty of both rural and urban Japan even more!
I have been watching Japan Rail for over two years but I have never seen such greenery surrounding the track. I was fasinated by the spectacular green and lush meadows that the line passes through. It is just thrilling to see all the trees and rice fields along the track. I really enjoyed the rise on this line. Thank you for a wonderful video.
こんなにんも海外の皆さんが長良川鉄道の風景を御覧なっていただき感謝です。
Such nostalgia. I used to ride this line often.
Akaike had crows hanging around the station, so graceful as they left . Even the Crows are well behaved in Japan 🙏❣️
Your Nagaragawa Line videos were how I became interested in Japanese train videos and they have brought me great enjoyment for years. Thank you for giving us an update on this line and I am very sad that local lines across Japan are being shut down.
What do you mean the local lines are being shut down?
@Ben Chuft Are they being replaced with some sort of express line? I'm just wondering how that'll affect residents if local lines are being shut down with nothing to replace them.
@@tofulosophy Most likely it will be replaced with a bus service as it's cheaper than a railroad and sometimes can be more convenient. Railroads are great for long-distance travel but low passenger count makes it very uneconomical. If the company or the prefecture deems the line unprofitable even if they switched to buses, then people will have to seek other transportation methods such as cars or taxis.
I love you japanese film drama korea
@@khamronsingame Railroads are also great if you want to get to where you're going on time, and not have to wait for a bus that's been held up in traffic (and it will be), and then sit in said traffic in said bus. It would be interesting how switching to inefficient bus travel will affect Japanese punctuality standards indeed.
I know Japan is no dreamland but watching these beautiful and peaceful rides I can't help thinking it actually is.
bless you to the guy sneezing at 1:58:43, also I love your videos, they make me wanna visit japan myself
This really calmed me down! Thank you! Really appreciate your channel!

なるほど。
Superb scenary and ride. Very interesting to see the railway and the Nagara river playing games, repeatedly crossing each other.
Best rail system in the world. Nothing comes even close. Would love to ride on it someday.
Thanks for the upload!
...i may never have the opportunity to visit japan...but this is how i would want to see it.... thank you for this....subscribed...

I really like the exceptional meeting of the river, the track and the motorway-bridge at 42:50 😯
Especially the mountanous area! Wow! ❤😊
Great ride! 🚃
Very scenic ride and fascinating to see how the rail line snakes through backyards so close to peoples houses. Sad to see lack of maintenance on rail stations.
Notice few passengers..meaning few income-money...
thanks

Thats a very NOISY train, But its cool to see a non electric train in Japan.
It's the women who are noisy, not the train!

The turnout (the correct name for the entire assembly of rails) incorporates a spring switch (the 'switch' is the two rails that can actually 'switch' a train from one track to another.)
'Spring Switches' are identified by special 'targets'/signs, lights/lamps or all of these, and would be identified as such in instructions to the train 'driver'/engineer.
In this instance, the target/sign with the 'crossed-through' "S" is one indication, the lamp atop the 'Switch Stand' is another.
Most Spring Switch Stands incorporate some form of hydraulic device that slows the switch rails returning to the 'pre-set' position after a train has 'run through' the switch. This reduces wear on both the rails and train wheels, especially if the train is long.

Not too sure why but I come here just for the train cab view because I am a train enthusiast

11:18 The track switch is in the wrong position to transition to the other track here. Did it switch just in time off camera? Edit: I just learned that some track switches are designed to be moved by the wheel flanges as is the case here. This concept did cross my mind but I thought "Nah, can't be" until I researched it. Moving the switch with the wheels would not work from the other direction, though.
1:17:14 Aioi stacja kolejowa blisko 1:17:29 ogródków działkowych japońskich ❤❤❤❤
Did you catch the magic trick at 45:12? 😅
What is the "numbered sticky" the train asks people to take at every stop?
Sadly, a common reason behind using a commercial operating company to operate a marginal railway is so that, at some point in time, it can be closed without the greatest part of the blame for its closure falling on the politicians. If the line is closed, they can say that it was not a commercially viable prospect whereas if it is operated by the government, people will say it has been badly run and that it should be granted a subsidy to keep running.
Seki - Tomioka to bardzo ładna stacja kolejowa ❤
Прикольно, очень много красивых видов!!!
45:10 ghosts!
Beautiful ride!
But what was at 11:17?!
The railroad switch was not used and the track junction is not pointing for the merger of the train to the single track!!
It is still point towards the right rail where the red train was!
Is it supposed to be like this? Is it something new that it if a train passes it just goes automatically to the correct position?
I think it is self-return junction. It is sometimes used on local railway or tram lines for easier traffic control. czcams.com/video/HIcRuRzkDag/video.html
It's a spring switch. That sign with an S with a line going through signifies it. It means that the switch is stuck in one position (from this video's perspective, it's going to the right-hand side platform). When the train we're viewing crosses over, the wheels push against a spring and it is able to pass through before springing back into position.

1:20:30 ... wow !!!
"As a consequence of Japan's declining population and frequent natural disasters (such as typhoons and heavy snowfall), the company is facing financial difficulties." Speaks volumes about public transport, immigration and investment in infrastructure.
I have a question, is this railway operated by a company or the government? It seems like the number of passengers isn't enough to make a profit.
It said in the introduction that the line is operated by a private company, and is their only railway line.
