Think he had Possibly one of the greatest voices to grace this world !!......along with Otis Redding :)
Marvin, Otis, Bill Withers and Al Green are my Mount Rushmore of R&B Soul singers.
Marvin Gaye, David Ruffin, Wilson Pickett, Otis Redding and of course, The Godfather himself, James Brown.
Marvin Gaye's version of this song will always be the definitive version for me, although the CCR and Gladys Knight versions are great too. Gaye's voice fits the song perfectly. And the strings and the backing vocals, the drums, guitar, bass and keyboard. Perfection. I remember how shocking it was when he died and how tragic it was. Check out these other Marvin Gaye classics when you can: "How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved by You)", "Too Busy Thinking About My Baby", "Ain't That Peculiar", "That's The Way Love Is", "Sunny", "What's Going On," "Inner City Blues (Make Me Wanna Holler)", "Mercy Mercy Me (The Ecology)", "Can I Get A Witness", "Let's Get It On", "Got to Give It Up" and many more! Plus, check out his duets with Tammi Terrell -- "Ain't No Mountain High Enough" and "Ain't Nothing Like the Real Thing" among others.
CCR is my favorite, but Marvin's version is amazing as well.
Marvin Gaye could sing anything he was so smooth and devine, he was all soul, will always love Marvin
Brave of Fogerty to even try, and he did pretty alright. But there was only one Marvin...
@@Tijuanabill Marvin was the man I was so sorry when we lost him , I often wonder what else he would have dazzeled us with. His tone was so warm and soothing he still had so much more to give RIP
@@genabourassa7962 I couldn't agree more. That tone was magic. They only come along once a lifetime like that, if you are lucky.
Asia & BJ, Marvin's "Lets Get It On" and "What's Going On" are next for you. He had amazing duets with Tammi Terrell such as "Aint No Mountain High Enough", "Ain't Nothing Like the Real Thing" and "You're All I Need to Get By". Creedence Clearwater Revival does an amazing 11 minute cover of this song.
How is it even possible for the two of you to have lived this long without ever hearing this?
I was wondering the same. It’s part of pop cultures soundtrack.
Maybe they’re joking? It’s hard to believe that’s possible. And to not have reacted to any Marvin is even more shocking!
seems like they had heard it before. doesn't say first time anywhere.
Greatest intro in the history of popular music. The piano, the percussion, the horns... then when he hits that first note! Goosebumps. Every. Time. Even after 50 years.
Agree. I'm an old white woman. Loved to watch him live. What charisma. So sexy. Great singer.
It sounds like an old west showdown
I grew up a rocker but I love Marvin Gay!!! First song I acknowledge of his was Sexual Healing back in the 80s and I was hooked.... went back looking at his career and was stunned 😳 ...he is a legend 😎
Arguably the greatest Motown single (#1 for 7 weeks) and one of the all-time great recordings in general. Brilliant vocals and production. Haunting. The song had been recorded by two other Motown acts earlier (Gladys Knight had a hit with it in a different style just a year or two earlier). It was originally an album track for Gaye and he was the one who insisted it be released as a single. He was right on.
You would love hearing the 2 other major covers of this song by Gladys Knight & the Pips and Creedence Clearwater Revival. They are both as high quality as this.
I thought ccr was the original?
@@justinlee7860 The Miracles were the first to record this song. Gladys Knight & the Pips' version was the first to be released. Gaye's version was also released before CCR's.
Not quite.....great yes....BUT Marvin Gaye's is perfect
@@otisyoung7061- I agree 1000%! I can happily listen *repeatedly* to Marvin Gaye sing this song. The CCR version, “I Hoid it Through the Grapevine,”no. Gladys Knight & the Pips, great, still not quite, BUT Marvin Gaye, perfect.
@@ellab8897 you foolish if you say no to the ccr version. It has so much more flavor and even stands on its own
This record got worn out in our house. Gladys Knight & the Pips were the first to record this, and it sounds totally different, but just as good.
I think the story of how they came to be the first people to release a version of this is insane, that Marvin wrote the track and the label didn’t believe it would work and wouldn’t get behind it so gave it to Gladys and the pips to revamp and make it fit the labels opinion of what would work, absolutely wild
It actually was recorded by Smokey Robinson and the Miracles, then Marvin but it was released by Gladys Knight and the Pips first. Also written by Norman Whitfield and Barret Strong
Marvin Gaye is just a legendary, iconic voice in R&B... Just listening to this track and hearing the nuances that he weaved w/ his vocals and evoked the emotions of the lyrics is a TREAT! R.I.P. to the legend 😪
My all time favorite Marvin Gaye ❤ song. Way to go guys. I watch regularly about 30 reaction people on CZcams this is a first. Well done. Cheers
Three great versions of this song, and you should check out all of them. This one, CCR, and my personal favorite, Gladys Knight and the Pips. Though every time I hear any of them I can't help but see the dancing raisins from the 1980s commercials for California raisins.
I remember them too! So cute!
Great tune, released in 1968 and still gets my foot tapping.
The damned ole Grapevine! The original Twiiter..lol..keep em coming!
Come right back with CCR's version of Grapevine(long version) you'll love it....lots of grit and soul...best cover EVER!
Respectfully disagree. Marvin and Gladys tore it up. CCR was pretty awesome too but Marvin's version is bar none.
The grapevine is by word-of-mouth, person to person down the line. There is also a stretch of Highway 99 (now Hwy 5) that travels from Bakersfield, Ca to Los Angeles that (at least in the past) was called The Grapevine. The first time I heard the Credence Clearwater Revival's version when it came out in 1970, I was driving through The Grapevine section headed for LA on the way to San Diego. This classic of Marvin Gaye's came out in 1968. It's kind of a crazy song, the lyrics are so sad, yet the music feels so good. It is easy for the chorus to get stuck in your head.
Absolute classic 👌 Marvellous Marvin
Marvin could sing the phone book. Stubborn Kinda Fellow, Hitch Hike, I'll Be Doggone, Ain't That Peculiar, Too Busy Thinking About My Baby, Got To Give It Up---those songs just scratch the surface. You could spend all day listening to Marvin Gaye and never get tired.
As many versions as this song has had. My favorite and the most soulful.❤️
Marvin's is my absolute favorite version of this song!
Mine too.
Me too. Grew up in MoTown, in the 60s. The covers are excellent, but when this song plays in my head, it’s always Marvin.
Absolutely mine too!
Wife here..One of my very favorite Marvin Gaye songs..The instrumentation arrangement "Perfection"!
someone told someone who told someone = the definition of "grapevine".
Marvin Gaye is my absolute favorite if I'm listening to this song. CCR comes right in there, to be honest.
This song always reminds me of the movie The Big Chill. Marvin is legend! We lost him way too soon
I wore this single out back in the day!!! Nothing like Marvin; nothing like the old Motown sound!!!!!
I am a white lady from the sticks of western Pennsylvania, and my grandmother was a HUGE Marvin fan. She was from the south, and I remember rolling pie 🥧 dough in the kitchen to this record. I mean legit record. Vinyl.
There’s a audio of Marvin’s isolated vocals that reveal just how skilled a vocalist he was on this song as you find the addictive drums and baseline propel this great song. His vocals are a revelation.
A classic performance by a class singer.
Back when people had real talent... Just a Mic, a Man, and raw talent! No auto tune or garbage!
"What's Going On?" is my favorite Marvin Gaye song.
Keep up the great content and we'll keep pulling up. This is your first time reacting to Marvin Gaye and BJ's asking you like you're an expert. I love your response Asia. Next Marvin Gaye song you should react to is ain't no mountain high enough. It's a duet with Tammi Terrell.
One of my favorite singers of all time. Marvin was a God
I’m a Blues/ Rock Alcoholic! But I sure love some old Motown too! 🎸🥁👍
Classic! Great to see it on here! Love you guys!
Love you guys! Would love to see reactions to Terence Trent D’Arby- “Wishing Well” & “If you let me stay”♥️🌷
Asia is so pretty!!! And Marvin Gaye was such a talent. He left this world too soon.
I’m shocked you haven’t reacted to Marvin! Truly one of the best. He has a ton of hits that I hope you check out, plus his duets with Tammi Terrell which are some of my favorites.
No joke. I can't listen to this song without crying (not even cause i relate to the lyrics) cause of the soul, emotion, lyrics, music, vocal melody, and vocal rhythm. The problem is all of that hits me at the same time without giving my heart a break and I can't help but cry at it's beauty. Top 3 best songs of all time.
If you like this song... check out Otis Reddings "Dock Of the Bay" and Dobie Gray's "Drift Away"
I was really into Marvin Gaye and Motown when I was at school. Used to have quite an extensive vinyl collection. My friend's brother who was a DJ offered me about £30 quid for my Diana Ross Reflections single, which was a lot back then, but told him there was no way I was parting with it!
No matter what genre you explore...the common denominator is "soul". Every artist who pours their soul into a performance....is a soul singer. Rap...hip hop...country...blues...RB....whatever. Music has no color. It will always be enjoyed by all of us. Keep moving forward, Asia and BJ. Never stop. Music is timeless. Al Green would be an artist to experience.
You know, that is the first time I've listened to that song from beginning to end....it's like I'm the one reacting - I've heard the chorus, or hook, whatever it's called nowadays...It was fire!
Marvin Gaye ❤️❤️❤️ this is what I grew up listening to, MOTOWN!! I WAS A 10 YR OLD SINGER, AND I WAS ALREADY INTO MARVIN...PLEASE PLAY & REACT TO HIS AWESOME, SOULFUL SONG: ((DISTANT LOVER))🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶
The ladies you’re hearing in the background are the Andantes. Louvain Demps, Jackie Hicks and Marlene Barrow-Tate, check them out.
Marvin was the top of his field 👍
Marvin Gaye's cover of "Yesterday" by the Beatles is one of the best Beatles covers I have ever heard. So soulful and passionate.
You really do the best music. Love this song!! ✌
Unfortunately, whenever I hear a version of this song the California Raisins always pop into my head.
😄😄😄😄 Yes!
It's always great to hear from the original artist and Marvin was Soooooo Smooooth. Thanks guys, keep it coming.
Although now days I listen to primarily Country Western, as a youngster or I should say teenager, all I listened to was Sam Cooke, Jackie Wilson, Otis Redding the Temps; Smokie, shoot man that was the best music and I still listen to this awesome music and people I miss those days man! Jim in Tx!
Fun fact : This version of this song was meant to be released 4/5 yrs earlier but it wasn't played/released because it was consider "to different "
I'm so glad you did this one. I'm a big fan and this is one of my favorites for 30 years
Listen to Marvin and Tammi..Greatest duet ever. If this world was mine. Ain't no Mountain high enough. You all I need to get by....
Marvin Gaye - Inner City Blues.
What's going on is one of those albums, that you feel blessed to have in your collection.
Marvin you were one of the most soulful voices I ever listened to in my life along with being one of the sweetest humble people along with your gift you had your demons but hey who doesn't rip Marvin and continue singing amongst the angels
This song has been suggested as the best rock song ever.
Marvin Gay Mr Motown Greatest song of his What’s going on. And many more by the way his version of heard it through the grapevine will always be The best one.
Cant beat the soul and r&b of 60's detroit, chicago and philly.
Play Distance Lover , live Oakland Ca . 1974 greatest live performance ever.
California raisins had a great ad campaign with the best commercials that had claymation raisins playing this song in the 80s. Commercials were so popular they even made figures of the raisins guys to give away in kids meals at Hardee's or Arby's or one those fast food joints.
If God had chosen a voice to spread his word, he would certainly choose Marvin Gaye or Sam Cooke.
i love you two for your honestly and both of you move real smooth
It’s on my playlist to this day.
Marvin was pouring his heart out in this song man
I love all the versions of this song, but this is the original from the originator... can't beat Marvin Gaye on this song. So much soul.
“Inner City Blues” is a must!
Watching you guys groove to some Marvin Gaye just made my day! Great reaction! Love u guys! 💕
Check out his acapella video of this song on You Tube. Marvin Gaye was one of the best voices of the 20th century.
Mmmmhmmmm..... Any Day with some Marvin Gaye is a fantastic day!!!! 😉❤✌
Watch the Marvin Gaye accapella version. His voice is from another dimension!!
One of the all time greats.
You MUST listen to “What’s Going On”! CLASSIC
A lot of good versions of this song, Marvin happen to do one of them! That’s another rabbit hole you need to go down… The Marvin Gaye catalog is Exceptional.
He was a great man and vocalist!
Such a tragic story, he was shot and killed the day before his 45th birthday by his father. He was shot twice following an altercation with his father after he intervened in an argument between his parents. RIP brother 🙏🏻🙏🏻
Marvin did a great version of this song and so many artists also covered this song, but Marvin’s version is definitely in my top 3
Raised on eclectic sounds and influences due to my parents music, IMO Marvin is the pinnacle of Motown, the musicianship was as good as his singing. "Got to Give it UP" is a must reaction.
Tyrone... I love it.
Gladys Knight actually recorded this the year before Marvin Gaye. For me, Gladys Knights version is my favorite 👍 Give it a listen.
Love me some Marvin Gaye!
I love this version so smooth. Make no mistake CCR crushed it no doubt. But I still love this one
Oh....Yea.....I can still see the Raisins dancing by to this song. Remember the commercial old-timers?
LISTEN TO THIS!!! Marvin Gaye - I Heard It Through The Grapevine (A capella)
he got an a cappella video of this song that's really good
I use to love Motown back in the days, that's all you use to hear coming from my house, that is until I went to a rock concerts 🤟🤪
He was truly the voice of Motown. His music never gets old. He is definitely on my permanent playlist. 🎼
I appreciate your not trying to pretend you hadn't heard this before. Great music. Great voice.
One of the best of all time. Great stuff.
The original hit version of I Heard It Through The Grapevine was done by Gladys Knight & The Pips! Marvin's cover became a monster hit and became the definitive version. Later, in the early 70's, CCR covered the song and made their epic album version which only they could have delivered!
The song was given to Marvin first, Marvin chosed not to record it. Norman then presented to Gladys and the Pips, who did a excellent recording of the song. But, Marvin's version of the song can't be touched.
@@neraddyolf9141 I agree but Marvin's version is still a cover.
Marvin Gaye recorded the song first. Marvin wanted to release the song as a single, Motown wanted it included on a album. Marvin refused, and shelved his recording. Norman Whitfield, the composer of song, then presented the to Gladys Knight and the Pips.
I stand corrected, Smokey and the Miracles recorded the song first, Aug. 66, Marvin Gaye, Feb. 67 and Gladys K. and Pips, June 67. Gladys K. and Pips release it first.
LOVVVVVVVVE Marvin---can't get enough!!!
Didju all know his father murdered him? For the insurance money, it was reported!!! 😭
The motive wasn't insurance money. It was a domestic violence situation. Marvin's father had a physical falling out with the mom, Marvin , who was unfortunately on cocaine for into a violent fight with Sr. And the dad shot him.
Tragic doesn't even describe it.
Asia you are so beautiful and you have the most amazing smile.
This is a good one.You guys should check out CCR's Version of "Heard it through the Grapevine",Then Gladys Knight and the Pips version.
What a journey! Love y'all.
I like YOU'RE MY PRIDE AND JOY by Marvin.
About time...long overdue
Amazing talent here as well!
Sweet Marvin can not be beat
Even Metal heads appreciate Greatness! Much Love to Marvin! Great song!
The best Motown song, right up there with Ain't to Proud to Beg.
It was number 1 in UK for three weeks in 1969, I love this song so much❤
