EASIEST WAY to daisy chain water barrels (low cost and effective)

- Catching rainwater for your garden is very economical. There’s no electricity, no where in tear on your well pump. Everything works with gravity so it’s very reliable
I liked this idea, but didn’t have any luck with this method and it grossed my water in the rain barrel. I went back to installing bulkhead fittings about 4” off the bottoms, and linked 5/8” hose pieces (I added new end fittings) between each barrel, using water splitters to daisy chain them together. It works so well for me!
Yes it works great. I used a pool cleaning pipe and work really well since more water can flow through. My barrels are open from top so did have much difficulty. Used ziplog bags with small stones and zip tied it to on end of the pipe so it does not come out wile I was filling the other end but once the system is set it stays in place. Thanks for this great tip saveed a lot of money and made maintenance so easy since nothing is glued

The nice thing is you don't need to have the barrel close to each other mine is twenty feet away from each other they still equalize

I am amazed and confused! When I heard "syphon" I thought you had to prime the system each time it rained. I definitely should have taken a hydro-dynamics course or watched more Mr. Wizard (or Bill Nye for you younger folk!). I'm trying to catch up and understand water levels and pressures and open vs vented systems... but then I'm famous for overthinking things. This definitely "opened" up some possibilities! Now if I can just figure how to apply this to a downspout diverter so I don't flood my foundation. Thanks for inspiration and ideas!

Thank you for this informative video. I would like to add my recent experience. I find that I don’t need to make sure that my hose is filled with water for it to flow… seems as though when it begins to rains, and as the first barrel filled up … so did the hose inside it. Once first barrel was full, the hose pushed through water to the next barrel automatically.
It seems that the airlock scenario may be a problem if the long hose full of air is sitting in some water in the second container. When the first container fills up, the pressure forces water into the pipe but the airlock prevents it transferring to be second container. If the second container is dry (or hose above water), as you say the transfer would proceed. Priming the hose with water seems to cover all bases.

I did want to ask how you keep mosquitoes out as I didn’t see any kind of screening. Mosquito dunks? Could I drill out the interior threaded bung hole cover and silicone it in place?
Neat trick with the bread. Had to sub just for that.
I watched my dad do that during solder jobs around the house or helping a neighbor out with plumbing. He's about to turn 91! I would say it's "really really old school." lol

Two questions for you: What's the diameter of the ag hose? Also do you need to put 10 gals. of water in each barrel or just the one barrel? Thank you
The video says each barrel needs enough water to cover the ends of both hoses. the hose diameter is irrelevant; those used in the video appear to be about 1/2 inch inside diameter.

I also suspect it doesn’t matter how long the hose is as long as it is filled with water to chain to other barrels around the yard.
As long as it’s filled with water it should work. We disconnect it in the winter pipe doesn’t freeze and break. We’re getting ready to reconnect it again.👍👍
@@livefree6878 I think the clusters of barrels around the yard would have to be about the same elevation. this can easily be done with a hose and some clear tubing on either end.
@@jaswas77 Yes, seems that if the downstream containers are higher than the first one, they might receive less volume of water? There comes a point where a significant height difference will prevent the Syphon action. I just linked two containers this way on level ground, using old style hose pipe that does not kink (rigid reinforced braid). Waiting for it to rain now 😂.

I would say it would work just fine, as long as the hose doesn’t kink, The plastic tubing is very rigid. Hope this answer helps👍
Is there another name for "agricultural pipe?" I'm having a hard time finding it, whatever it is.
Somehow I think I may have found it in the gardening section in Lowe’s. I can’t think of another name offhand. I know that it comes in half inch and three-quarter inch in a big spool. Maybe it was near the drainage pipe. I hope this answer helps👍

Okay so I can't get this to work. The bread is not forming a proper plug; no matter how many layers I put in (3-5) it seems to push or slide out when I invert the hose (using black irrigation line, smaller diameter than in the video but same basic stuff) and I'm not getting a siphon effect. Any more advice or tips?
