PrEP for HIV Prevention: The Best Worst Kept Secret | Raphael Landovitz | TEDxUCLA

  • “Preventive Medicine” has arrived for those at risk for HIV. New medical strategies are available to help prevent HIV from being transmitted. As futuristic as this concept seems, it is part of a preventive revolution for medical care - where an “ounce of prevention” may be worth more than a “pound of cure.”
Raphael Landovitz’s clinical research career focuses on optimizing the use of HIV antiretroviral therapy for both HIV treatment and HIV prevention.
Dr. Landovitz was trained at Princeton University and Harvard Medical School. He completed post-graduate training in internal medicine at Brigham and Women’s Hospital (1996-1999) and Infectious Diseases and HIV Medicine at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Massachusetts General Hospital (1999-2001). He works in the DAIDS-funded AIDS Clinical Trials Group (ACTG), HIV Prevention Trials Network (HPTN) and the NICHD-funded Adolescent Trials Network (ATN), and serves as the Clinical Research Site leader of the UCLA CARE Center Clinical Research Site for the DAIDS-funded networks. He is the principal investigator of a multisite PrEP demonstration project in Los Angeles County, and the protocol chair of Phase 2a and Phase 2b/3 studies of long-acting injectable PrEP using GSK1265744 (cabotegravir).

There was a time in South Africa (1990's) that we had a president who argued (academically) that HIV does not cause AIDS. People who needed treatment did not get it during that time. They died from AIDS related diseases. South Africa learned a lethal lesson and now not only admisters ARVs (saving millions of lives) but also has rolled out PREP (preventing millions more from being infected). HIV denialism should be declared a crime against humanity!

This is a great description of HIV and the different methods that are being developed in order to prevent it. It's amazing to see how far medicine has come since the AIDS epidemic back in the 70's. Unfortunately, the stigma behind HIV has not gone away completely, but the hope is to bring the truth to light about the importance of primary prevention. Thank you to scientists and researchers like you who continue to make meaningful contributions to the world.

Checked the date this video was released and was shocked. Heard about PrEP last week on a radio but didn't think I heard what they were saying properly cause I didn't think this was possible or that someone can actually trust this. Randomly came across it when I heard read about some people being naturally resistant to HIV. Here I am in the year 2023 and this has been out there all along but I had never heard about it; only knew about PEP which I also didn't trust could work until a friend of mine was on it. 1. There a guy in Ireland that was immune to the hiv virus because his T-cell had a special protein that stop the virus from attaching itself to his t-cell and replicating.
    2. I'm guessing they were able to synthesized this protein and make a pill that can naturally dissolve over making it more financially profitable. instead of just giving them a shot and synthesize protein attach to antibodies.
    3. This protein can make us immune to pretty much everything. If one cell can produce a protective protein all cell can.
    4. You have 5 years before I make my research public. Then, the world finds out you have a potential universal cure for almost everything but you refuse to make your finding public.

About 1% of the Caucasian population has this. It's actually the lack of a protein receptor called the ccr5. It's a genetic mutation. It doesn't allow the virus to get a foothold and pass through the cell membrane to infect new cd4 cells so the virus just dies.

@cathy smith yeah totally, if a woman who unknowingly contracted hiv prior to meeting her husband passes it on to him, then the husband totally deserves that punishment and is automatically a sinner. because hey only sinners get punished with hiv. suuuure. You should not be spewing such deranged lies, you are a danger to society and have no grasp of God. shameful
