  • This is my first cover of "Motorcycle Emptiness" by the Manic Street Preachers. Can I play the lead parts or should I stick to rhythm playing? I'll be the first to tell you that I have never seen myself as a lead guitarist - too many pauses and solos.
Note: the vocals in this cover version are generated by an AI trained in my voice, although it doesn't sound much like me and pronounces 'motorcycle' in a really weird way.
What do you think? Is this a good start for a beginner? Is any of it any good? Please let me know in the comments what you think of this video. Did you like the 4k? Did you like the song? What did you think of the vocal & guitar performances. Did you like the audio enhancements in editing? Please let me know down in the comments.

I'm returning to playing guitar after a 20+ year absence, so I'm no virtuoso. (My fingers & brain don't work like they did in my teens / twenties!) I am in essence not very far from a beginner.
Join me on my journey into the world of guitars. This will be a magic, mysterious, thrilling, sometimes infuriating, journey into learning, playing and recording guitar, and all things guitar related.
Think of me as your learning buddy, your 'pathfinder', a nostalgic reminder of your own guitar learning story, or primarily an entertaining novice on a journey of discovery. I won't take this too seriously. It's a hobby, not life and death. Let's have a laugh together.
At the end of 2020 I was challenged to record a cover version of "Seven Nation Army" by the White Stripes on my guitar. The challenger said that if I recorded it then they would record themselves singing over it. This kick-started my 2022 drive to not only re-learn the guitar, but improve on my 'skills' from my 20's, finally conquer the instrument, and start the "Guitars Are Hard" CZcams channel to share my experiences and knowledge with others.

Great video. I am no great Lead player, but I play what I can. I have no interest in being Yngwie Maalmsteen. Always learn and play what you like, it spurs you on to get better at it and you enjoy it more.

My suggestion: don’t listen about how to play lead from a lead player, listen to how a drummer does fills.
Scales are baloney. Josh Homme of QOTSA made up his own damn scale.
It will sound good as long as you end up at the root note.
Very few non-guitarists are impressed by how technically brilliant or how fast someone plays, they don’t care and too many notes begins to sound like noise: the blues greats like Hubert Sumlin, BB King, Albert King and Albert Collins understood this. Obviously Jimi knew this, Jimi played what he felt and couldn’t have cared less for scales.
    Sing, sing with your hands.
Lastly, see all those places your fingers go when you make a chord? All of those places are places you can for sure bend notes at for a lead.
Again, listening to other lead guitarists will at best unconsciously undermine your originality and have you (poorly) duplicating them and at worse discourage you.

Wow! Like wow! Thank you for sharing! Soooo much good advice there. It will take me ages to unpack it all & take it onboard. Love ending on the root & bending notes in the chord. Priceless! Top, top stuff! Can I steal them for my short vids? 😉
