    I think the thing that make One Piece so good is also what it suffers from. It does SO much. There’s so many amazing, unique characters/designs constantly being introduced, all with their own stories and motivations. Add the ever changing settings, different arcs, and overarching plot on top of that and it’s gotta be a nightmare to manage. The depth and care in every small aspect of it IS what makes it amazing, but it’s also the downfall in situations like this. Doing so much for everything means you can’t do as much as we wish in areas it really counts.

I won't lie, I have zero desire to watch or read it, but it's genuinely amazing to watch/listen to someone who does, and clearly loves it, gush and sing its praises. Not a very short Short, but how else could it be with this chapter?
    And yeah, something is missing with Zoro and Tashigi. When looking at the events of Punk Hazards, it feels to me that Oda hasn't forgotten that, and I hope it will eventually, just like How Sanji got his backstory developped very late. But it really should have been done more gradually as the story progress.

  • @spdewertton
    @spdewertton Před 19 dny +4

    You're right about Zoro. The idea of this swordsman who can literally cut down mountains but whose personal tragedy is a friend who fell down the stairs offers a lot of options for character stuff. He should be overly worried and sensitive towards random acts of fate taking people away from him. He should have been freaking out a lot more when Nami got sick in Drum Island, for example.
    We do get a bit of Zoro the Protector here and there. There's a theory that Zoro is always sleepy because he stays watch all night. I don't know if Oda ever confirmed that, but it's a nice thought. Still not enough tough.

    • @spdewertton
      @spdewertton Před 19 dny +2

      And no, Kunia did not take her own life, for anyone thinking of bringing that up. "Falling down the stairs" is not a Japanese euphemism. Oda's editors would never allow that idea on chapter 5 of a new shonen series.
      The meta reason why Kuina fell down the stairs is that Oda had to fit Zoro's flashback in only half a chapter. Stairs were the quickest way to kill her. There was no time to introduce some antagonist or explore some disease.

His pretty conspicuous tattoo is visible for the reader, and for Smoker who recognizes him right away, signaling that, whoever this guy is, he’s a big deal.

    I think part of the magic of one piece is how Oda can take extremely cartoonish and fantastically places and characters and make them feel grounded and real, like real places and real people because as fantastically they can be, there inner core, their drive and their dreams are truly relatable and human. The goofy rubber boy who scarfs down food and is dumb enough to sail to the grand line on a small boat, who should just be an anime cliché because there’s a real human core to him and his beliefs. His dreams of freedom and a brighter future for others feels real and relatable and he sells how real it through his words and actions

      I wonder what the original plan for Smoker was. Looking at the line up of Grand Line arcs, it's hard to see where Oda could've ever fit him as an antagonist. There were theories that he'd join the crew, though. Maybe the idea was to have him flip sides, but Oda decided it was too early to explore the idea of marines betraying the governament.

      @spdewertton I believe he could have fit in as a reoccurring foil to luffys crew. Showing up in arc, getting stronger along side them. Maybe throwing a wrench into bigger arcs like in alabaster.

Sadly, he couldn’t show up in Skypeia, and there wasn’t really any time for him in Water 7 or subsequent arcs with all that was happening in them, so he could only show up after time skip, at which point the rest of the story had grown too much for him. Like I have to ask after the time skip has there ever been a moment that truly felt like an 18th century pirate fantasy world (I respect egghead and wano & having the cast explore different worlds but they kinda do feel a bit like different genres instead of a notical old world story) this may just be me but I do feel after the skip the world just got so big the early characters kinda got lost

Maybe they could have shown up in Whiskey Peaks, Mock Town, or even Water 7. But then they would have taken away from the arc-specific characters.

Knowing that, it should be safe to assume that Oda had already changed his mind by the time Mihawk was introduced. I kinda think this rush benefited louge town in my opnion,having this quicke fun and memroable adventure that quickly escelated from:one final quick stop before grand line to an escape from almost getting excuted and barely managing to survive with sheer 120% maximum luck all in the span of just 5 chapter is amazing, and in contrast to prevouis arc wich just gotten bigger in scale louge town is a breath of fresh air(i wounder how the live action rendetion will lock like)oda is know for his long arc but i find these short arc to always be nedded not evreything has to be dressrosa or wano(marine ford was only 30 chapters of pay off for a saga and louge town 5 chapter pay off of the proLOUGE saga)

    Speculation about the end of One Piece is kind of cliché, but I personally hope the last moments harken back to this-a signal that the adventure will continue as long as there are adventurers to go on it, even if the world feels so much smaller after all we've seen and been through.

      You're correct. Oda initially had a five-year plan for One Piece, but when he started fleshing out backstories for the Seven Warlords of the Sea, they revealed more characters and plot threads and the worldbuilding got more and more complicated until it became the saga that it is.

    I personally never liked Tashigi, so I don't really miss her, and I always celebrate her Ls in the story, LOL. I COULD like her, but I just hate delusional marines with little introspection and awareness of their station, and Tashigi was introduced and reintroduced with a lot of that. She arrogantly claimed she'd retrieve all the shoudai swords, and was naive about the politics of the world gov.
    I mean, it doesn't make her bad, but- how do I put this... While the temperaments are different, she's like Bakugou: loudly confident and self assured while working on too little information and looks like an arrogant puppy in the grand scheme. I love Bakugou, but that's cuz he has the screentime to grow as the self awareness is beaten into him. Tashigi doesn't.
    I just don't see many redeeming qualities in her; she doesn't even have the charisma or is funny enough to carry where her development is lacking.

    Zorro has the weakest backstory of all the strawhats. Maybe the "fullfill dead friend's dream for them" thing just doesn't resonate with me. It's a very individual dream and Zorro doing it will never be the same as Kuina achieving it.
    The gender thing just confuses matters. How are you going to pay off on that? Have Tashigi beat Zorro at the end of the story? Where's the set up for that? Genderbend Zorro so he defeats Mihawk as a women to show the little girls of the world that they can be strong? Kuina was horrified at going through a female puberty. Of how estrogen would be the difference between achieving their dream or not and what it would do to their body. Kuina's story reads like a trans kid who took their own life to escape puberty...like, the fuq? Read between the lines and that's what you get. Either way, I doubt that whole gender aspect to it will actually be addressed or paid off on.
    To be fair he was the first Strawhat after Luffy (though Luffy got more added later). There's just not much going on with him and it's shocking that he's not had his backstory developed on like Sanji did. Especially in Wano.

      But if that’s impossible I won’t bring it up again, as much as it will pain me I know you’re a busy man. All I can say is, thanks for responding.

  • @christopherauzenne5023

    regarding “Oda is just a cartoonist/having an unrealistic style” I have to ask, ok and? Can a cartoonist’s art not be something great, does unrealistic suddenly mean bad, Does that suddenly mean it’s not a craft in itself nor can it be used or be elevated to something amazing. It is a craft like any other and it can be art and something great if the hand that makes it tries and is good enough
    Oda is one of my favorite manga artist simply because he isn’t just repeating the set manga style, he is taking influence from Japanese manga and classic western cartoons (rubber hose, Tex Avery, looney tunes) to create something new and use the strengths of both to create something more

    It's not too surprising, though disappointing, that two of your three big complaints were basically 'female character gets overshadowed, ignored, and underwritten'. One Piece still has a lot of flaws common to shonen, including treatment of women.
