Got a Mod Shop HSS strat that I absolutely LOVE and has become my #1 but boy the road to receiving it was odd. Very vague process that leads to a guitar just showing up one day. Shame that some people have had bad experiences. I personally think if you have the money it's the best route to getting a new American strat because you can get the exact guitar you're looking for. They often have some pretty cool options pop up when it comes to materials and vintage pickups. Obviously you're better off holding the guitar you're going to buy but if you're going to go the online route it's a rad option.

I agree if you're looking at getting something like a strat or tele. Last time I checked there's very few options for jaguars and jazzmasters. You're basically paying more for a custom color in that case, and you can't even get finishes in nitro!

I modded my 2010 American Standard Strat. Completely got rid of the normal volume knob, turned the first tone knob into the new volume. Replaced the 3 single-coils with a JB/Jazz set. Custom pickguard for the new electronics. I then eventually moved that JB/Jazz set to my sparkly pink Ibanez RG. I put the Ibanez humbuckers in my Strat and it sounds freaking amazing.

I ordered two Mod Shop hardtail Strats in a year, the first one in Aztec gold had an issue with the volume pot where it kicks in when it's supposed to be all the way off, otherwise a beautiful guitar that I love so much that I ordered a second one in Penny once they got the roasted maple necks back in stock. The second one had to go to a local service center as the neck pickup was loose and not functioning. Despite those issues - which shouldn't be happening at this price point - these have become my two favorite guitars.

I think 8 lbs 10 oz would be just about perfect honestly. I've found it depends on how a guitar sits, too. I used to have an ES-335 that was only 8.5 lbs, but where it hung would make my back ache. This is just Fender taking guitar buyers as mugs, expecting them to accept anything
that they choose to dispatch and then saying you can't return a "Mod Shop" guitar.
Having ordered and waited a long time for a Custom Shop strat to arrive with similar
issues, i can fully understand how this person felt, the sight of which stays with
    you for a long time.
I was lucky that my dealer fought with Fender until they agreed to replace my
bad sample and even then i waited 18 months before a master builder was
    available to have another attempt.
Since then i only buy Fenders that i can fully inspect before i buy, they can keep

I bought a MIM Fender Strat green metalflake/sparkle. I could see polka dot ghosts in the finish. I liked it and it was only visible under certain lighting condition. A Buddy Guy refinish I'm guessing? My mod shop is amazing, but they are undercutting their dealers so if dealers aren't thrilled, I can see why.

  • @johnvickersziarnick5174

    The mod shop?
I purchased a Tele Ultra from maybe the most popular guitar store on the planet.
It arrived with many challenges which the guitar store in question reimbursed me to have corrected.
While playing it the other day the tele tones just flat went away. It became dead sounding and when I hit the S1 button it increased the volume. The tone knob did nothing and the bridge pickup was almost completely dead.
I decided to take it apart to see if I could figure out why.
Keep in mind that although they are/were assembled by Fender's masters in the Custom Shop, they were not fully built by them.
When I pulled the pickguard there was much trash between it and that part of the painted body.
When I pulled the switchplay I immediately found 2 broken ground wires. I repaird them and put it back together to still having a similar challenge but the tone pot was partially back to working, but still the S1 circuit only sent the volume to the moon.
I took it back apart and found the red wire from the bridge puckup also broken inside the heatshrink at the connector and unsoldered making an intermittent connection.
Once that was repaired and my tele put back together it sounds much brighter and tele-like than it had since it was purchased. Now it sounds like a Telecaster should.
But who is responsible? The CEO, the people putting the switchplate together, the individual assembling the guitar, the music store that is so proud of their 55 point inspection process & the pro set up people?
It was delivered with high frets, B string buzz open, G string dead because the nut was too tight on that string, not to mention the sound was "kind" of teleish at best?
In my opinion it is all the above.
This is my first tele as well as last tele. Yes, now I truly love this guitar but for sure I will never buy a high-end Fender again. There are many tele style guitars on the market today that are real and quality built. Actually there are many different guitars by many manufacturers that beat Fender who now seems to sell their very old name instead of wonderful guitars.
I wonder if they will do the same with Studio One now that they have purchased it.......

The real problem with larger companies like Fender is that theyre run by a bunch of college boys and accountants with MBAs whos primary concern is the bottom line. They rely on the Brand Name. This was the same problem in the 1970s with CBS....they put out a ton of product with minimum Quality Control. You can have quality or speed, but not both when it comesto bulding guitars. Until theres a way to completely mechanize the bulding process there will be flaws as long as human hands are involved. The fret and nut work is especially crucial, Fender could affordto purchase a bunch of PLEK machines, but if the tecnicians programming and running the PLEK dont know what theyre doing it wouldnt make a difference.

I have no reason to believe this is happening but, if you have a line of guitars that cannot be returned, and you have lazy employees, it stands to reason that less than optimal parts end up in that area of the operation

Basically, Fender's Mod Shop is similar to how you would order a Keisel guitar, which now has a great track record of customer satisfaction.
The difference is Fender's Mod Shop is not the main focus of its total production, whereas customized ordering is the main focus for Keisel.
I think we can all understand QC issues, but Fender's response to this guy's mod shop order was weak at best.

It is a HSS though with Pro 2 pickups-I wonder if some snake oil is going on. I do not know if it really sounds better than the pickups it came with? Oh well. You live and learn.

From a consumer standpoint. You shell out a bunch of money for a guitar. It should be right or it gets fixed. No extra fee to "set up" a guitar because xyz isn't covered by the warranty. As you both know the warranty on most guitars covers absolutely everything except what's wrong with the guitar you just shelled out a chunk of change for. And from what you say it seems things are even worse on the custom shop instruments.. And to compound the issue it's getting more and more difficult to play a guitar before you buy it.

Nobody seems to want to work anymore. It’s pretty depressing. Even people who run their own businesses don’t show up for jobs. Can’t get a plumber to come. Can’t get an electrician to come. A lot of people have just stopped showing up for work. It’s really kind of a terrible time, and unfortunately, we’re being set up for AI to replace a ton of these jobs permanently. The people who keep working are overwhelmed, and it often feels like there’s no reward.

I personally don’t buy anything from Fender themselves. I buy all the parts from Stew Mac and build my own Stratocasters. I literally between Stew Mac and Stratosphere build all my own guitars part by part so I can get exactly the guitar I want. No matter what options I want get the parts and do it yourself. I’ve been playing and working on my own stuff for over 50 years now. So I guess not everyone can do what I’m saying. But honestly I feel like the guitar feels more special to me since I know every single piece that has went into it. Just my thoughts.

Resale value? If you build it chances are you are going to keep it. O K For example I changed stuff on my Les Paul studio. Changed from them small junk pots to CTS 500K pots. Changed from junk plastic coated wire to Grarett cloth wiring in 50's style. And many other improvements. Did I ruin the resale value? Even if I did I wouldn't care cause this is the guitar I ordered in my head and built for myself. 97 ebony with gold trim ebony fretboard. 496/500 pups, Kluson locking tuners, Tusc XL nut, Tonespro locking bridge, Schaller straplocks, chainsaw case.

The fact he had to get 50 thousand views for them to acknowledge an issue is absurd. I used to love Fender as well but not buying anymore. At least for a while until they start to produce quality and care about their customers. And start drying wood properly. Fender is the king of fret sprout. They have gotten arrogant during the Covid boom, reduced quality, and jacked up prices. Another example of bad leadership.

Twice recently I tried using the Mod Shop guitar builder, and it was just too slow and cumbersome, and I have super fast internet and computer. It was a pain. But the main issue I found was not enough choice for customization to even make it worth my while. The selections for wood, finish and hardware was much too limited. So it's a big "NO" for me. Waste of money.
