It wasn’t as strong as before but few excersise has been helping me recover it. And after I regain that power from headvoice imma be able to take my mix voice even higher than F4/G4 that’s just comfortable range I can go higher but I rather not strained. I been constantly learn relax jaw flat tongue improve headvoice as well as singing my runs are getting better constantly watching observing what singers and vocal coaches do

I'm now singing lighter and I think I'm finding a real mix. But yeah I lost my headvoice by all the time working on chest voice and kind of pushing it because I didn't know I had to get rid of the weight. With some time of practice, you are saying that F4s and G4s are easy and comfortable ?

      @@tylerwysong exactly tyler. How i must to sing that high notes??in the same so forward placement than the middle range??
      Ive found out tha if i send the mixed coordination to a so forward placement on the high notes i tend to push the air and my cords get hoarse;
      When i sing in the middle range with my mixed coordination i use so much belting forward placement kind of sending the sound to my teeths; but if i go through a higher notes i feel i cant send it so forward so i kind of send it to the hard palate no to the teeths. First of all because my mouth its more opened. Does that happen to you too?? I mean, the mouth is more open in a D5 than a C4 , so if you want to sing a D5 you got to open more your mouth and obviously you can not or you shouldnt send the sound to your teeths (a so forward placement) because if you try it you could be pushing the air; and pushing the cords. so your own body ask you to send it a little behind, to the hard palate. I wish you understand.
      Have you noticed that too??
      Im only talking about mixed coordination. I dont switch to the head voice on the highs.

  • @kryztofah8519
    @kryztofah8519 Před 3 lety +1

    I like this approach better than the other approach to higher notes other youtube teachers teach (e.g. Chris Liepe, Phil M.). Feels much easier but this kind of sound suits other styles better than others of course. I find it helpful singing Andrea Bocelli, Daniel Emmet type songs or even some Boyz II Men stuff- but ehrrmm I realized that even singers like Boyz II Men don’t do this exclusively- they do it often (wanya morris for example when he sings operatic sounding notes) but not exactly ALL the time, lol. Since it’s modern music we got a lot of singers doing their own thing - e.g. the lady of Fleetwood Mac is pretty freaking nasal and a bunch of vocal coaches don’t want their students to be nasal at all so sucks for the student who wants to sing like that lady.
    So I’ve come to realize lately - Some singers apply both this technique and lets say Chris Liepes “mix” technique interchangably so they have more sound choices. A great example would be Bruno Mars. I feel the difference between the two techniques being taught (yours and liepes). Though, makes me pretty confused when people call those sounds singers like Adam Lambert/Bruno Mars do when they belt like Liepe as “strained” - so it’s usually any sound in the 4th octave + that doesn’t sound like this is usually labeled as straining all over the internet (but I tell myself take that as a grain of salt because anyone can post anything but that doesn’t mean everythings a fact) - makes me feel conflicted because one person would be telling me it’s ok while the other says it’s not ok.
    The Chris Liepe Mix Voice one definitely feels harder to do and sometimes yields a pretty hideous sound for some vowel sounds like “EE, IH and OO” for example... but sounds like “EH/AY, OH/OW (cow)” don’t sound bad at all with it and feel easier than those other vowels.
    Your technique feels way easier for those “harder” vowels I can’t do easily with Liepes “mix” sound (e.g. Ee, IH, OO) and it sounds better too with your approach, imo. Yeah.
    I guess that’s what vocal coaches say that some artists “break the rules” because they don’t do this exclusively for every single thing they sing all the way thru 100% of the songs they sing. 😱😱 They do their own thing - a whole bunch of things they learned throughout their life- (e.g. Jack Black) they learned how to make all these sounds they can do work with their music and compliment with the backing track sounds and sometimes it’s sounds people don’t dare to teach students, especially beginners, lol. 😅

      @tylerwysong  Před 3 lety +2

      Yes for sure. For me this is a starting point balanced in the middle. I do not expect or even recommend that everything be sung this way, that would be ridiculous. But I do think it's a good idea to at least have the ability to make this sound. Then from there you can always open it up more and what not so that it suits the style you are singing.

  • @jmerdsoy
    @jmerdsoy Před 3 lety

    Ok wow. This exercise is amazing. I can really hone in a very balanced, rich and powerful mix with this. Can you explain why singing into an enclosed small space helps target the right coordination?

    • @anastan2366
      @anastan2366 Před 2 lety +1

      Because the mixed voice place is in the pharingeal space which is a closed space, not so open as the mouth is. Closing up the mouth makes the air travel more into the soft palade and makes you acces the higher notes easily . When you yell, or open the mouth too much you force the air out and it s impossible to acces a mixed voice because you get stuck in a chest resonance.

    Thanks for the video! I love your content. I'm a tenor and I've been working on sovt and sovt to mix exercises since I first saw one of your videos two weeks ago and I have noticed I have been able to release a lot of tension around the larynx and finally I'm sustaining middle-high notes with ease and freedom. I've also noticed I have the tendency to push air when I try to sing higher and I've worked on maintaining a steady airflow and a stable rib cage, it feels amazing and ridiculously easy, but I can feel I still have a big tendency to constrict as I sing higher and to "spread" the sound widening too much my mouth, not only this is uncomfortable but also, as a classical singing student, that kind of sound doesn't work for me. Do you have any advice? Thanks again!

    • @tylerwysong
      @tylerwysong  Před 5 lety +3

      Thanks so much for the kind words! Don't be afraid to over do the narrow vowels to get a more 'Covered' sound in your first passagio especially if you are a classical singer. Of course even in classical we do not want to sound manufactured but you definitely cannot sound to spread as you mentioned. Check out this video I did, i think this is a great way to really start working in a more appropriate sound for you.

    This is pure gold! I noticed you have a lot of control on your larynx position and I can't never keep it in the middle. Do you think that might be a reason for pushing chest voice when going through the 1st bridge?

    • @tylerwysong
      @tylerwysong  Před 5 lety +2

      Yes for sure, a higher larynx often, although not always, tends to lend itself to pulling up chest voice. If you have seen my video on formants and harmonics then this might make sense, if not I am sorry for the jargon, but when the larynx raises too much the first formant is raised quite significantly, and what we want to do for the mix voice that I teach is keep the first formant somewhat stable and low and in order to do that we have to learn to keep the larynx stable because out of all the articulators the larynx moves the first formant the most. Again if that makes no sense so sorry but it is whats actually happening.

The way I keep it in place is not by thinking muscles its by thinking vowels. But the vowels often come out as some weird mixed vowel because I just mess with it until I get it in the right spot (The first formant that is). So try thinking vowels instead of muscles.

      The pressure build up in the mouth or intra oral pressure you get from occluding the mouth with your hand helps to position the vocal cords as well as keep the vocal tract in it's ideal state to go from low pitches to high pitches eventually seamless without any evidence of transition. Sensations are so individual but I notice a buzzing sensation at the front of my mouth somewhat similar to a "Vv" sound, as well as a feeling of pressure inside my mouth when doing this particular exercise.

    my chest voice stops at an F4, so how can I get more power in the rest of the 4th octave, as my mixed voice sounds light there?

    Is it possible that some individuals can never access a well built mix?
    Ive been working on the mix for aslong as i can remember
    But the only time i ever came close to singing in mix was when i was sick with flu
    I found that i could sing in the mix with really effortlessly with full closure.
    Otherwise my mix always sounds heady-ish. Even if im able to find certain days where my mix feels more solid, the longer i sing in that mode, the quickly i start to transition from mix to heady tone onceagain.
    Its really frustrating and i think my folds are simply not built to handle the mix

      Try adding a little more flow to your sound, a little more breathy feeling for now.

    Would you consider adding weight the same as adding volume?
    Maybe adding weight is the wrong verbiage here. To me, adding weight means adding more chest voice. Which is the opposite of what I'm trying to do. I'm trying to carry up less weight as I ascend. But, I used to associate weight with volume. I had to back way off in order to give up the weight and find my mix. Now that I have, I can add more volume to get that more robust sound you mention by simply adding more support. But, it doesn't feel like I'm working much harder.
    However, I'm also really confused. Because your head voice/falsetto example still sounds connected to me. Definitely lighter than the other examples. But, it still sounds connected. Which means it sounds like you're still in mix, just a really light mix. Am I way off on this?

    • @tylerwysong
      @tylerwysong  Před 5 lety

      No I don't think so! Although that is just my perspective. I think you can add volume without it feeling weighty, but I guess it always depends on where an individual is starting from possibly what i think feels very free and weightless someone stuck in head voice might perceive it as more weighty for a time until they get used to it ,so it is always a question of our own individual experience thus far.

      @@tylerwysong What would you say you are doing in order to take that light mix sound and turn into the fuller robust sound? What are you adding or doing differently to achieve that sound?

    • @tylerwysong
      @tylerwysong  Před 5 lety +1

      @@nikosiler5965 I think that was the point I was attempting to make in this video, I'm not trying to take the light mix sound and make it fuller. For me they are separate things, just like Chest and Head. Blending in and out of them for me is just a steady switching between them. I think I have just been at this for so long now that I have developed the coordinations in order to sing in and out of them at will, but it didn't use to be that way for me!

    Hey, Tyler. Why opera tenor always sounds really chesty ( or powerful chest resonance) when hitting a high note. But when contemporary singing in high mix rarely sounds like that( either sound balanced which is pretty good or sound a bit thinner voice)

    • @tylerwysong
      @tylerwysong  Před rokem +1

      Contemporary singers sing with microphones and typically opera singers do not.
      That “chesty” sound usually sounds not so good up on a mic but without a mic sounds amazing!

      When you’re holding a hammer everything is a nail, and sometimes a rock will do.
      Also what you’re describing is not what mix voice is. At least not how I do it or teach it.
      Again as I’ve mentioned to you in another one of your somewhat condescending comments if you think that way and sing good then great. That’s not what is anatomically happening when you sing. Also the Estill model of twang is false too. Check into Kerri obert research.
