- I've had a few comments asking about this black screen issue on youtube and some other video playback apps on the new 2022 Apple TV 4K 3rd Generation and if this model fixes the issue. Well, the issue of the black screen has nothing to do with the hardware and has everything to do with software and a very specific feature. SO today we will show you what is causing it and you can decide if its something that you want to change. But the simple answer is NO, the 2022 Apple TV 4K 3rd Generation does not fix this issue.

Just a heads up for those that are thinking of buying the new apple tv because they are having this black out issue. Looks like its not fixed in the new unit. Lets hope for a software update soon.
Now that you know it's because you have Dolby Vision turned on all the time you should edit the video and add something like by the way I found out what the problem is and here's how to fix it.
Here is the real fix. I just got an upgraded Apple TV Plus with a new Insignia 50 4K TV. Here it is. Go to "Accessibility" under settings. Go to "Motion." Go to "Dim Flashing Lights." By default, it is enabled. Just turn off or disable this feature. Problem fix. It may also work on older Apple TV boxes. I don't know since this is my first Apple TV Plus. You DO NOT have to mess with the Match Content.
TURN OFF DOLBY VISION OR 4K HDR !!! Turn it to 4K SDR !!! Your tv is forcing itself to go to DV or HDR when it will play in lower frame n it has to switch. It's called the handshake. A video 2 yrs ago was done on this
The other approach works, too. I have HDR10+ and Dolby Vision turned on with my Apple TV’s attached to Samsung and LG televisions. As long as you turn off the options for matching dynamic range and matching frame rate, you will see no blackouts.
I thought my apple tv is just old and I need to upgrade. Thanks
It doesn’t matter if he turns off the hdr forcing if he still not enable the “match range” feature…
Yeah but then wouldn't that mean you get not see content in DV or HDR?
Edit: I looked it up. The ATV switches to DV or HDR even if you switch it to 4k SDR.
Thank you for this setting.. I was really struggling to wonder why it will keep doing that
The 2s comes from changing the tv refresh rate because of Match Dynamic, it's nothing that can be solved by Apple, it's up to the TV to switch faster when the signal changes
It worked !! Thanks much !!
This is sooooo helpful. Right on spot. Problem fixed. Bought Apple TV 2 weeks ago and have been so annoyed by this. Hear the sound of going back to Home Screen but image is still black. Thank you
Have you triied the firer stick tv? we have ? really like them.
I've had this annoying problem as well on my Apple TV. What I did is left Match Dynamic Range on and switched my video format from 4K Dolby Vision to 4K SDR. I noticed when I watched CZcams my TV went black and switched from 4K Dolby Vision to what my TV calls standard. It has been working well so far. If I do watch something that is available in Dolby Vision on Disney+ it does go black again and auto switches to Dolby Vision but I see the black screen way less often now.
thanks for letting us know what you did until the official fix happens.
Dude you are the man!
Thank you so much, we have had this apple tv for a few months now and always had this problem so now that its fixed I don’t gotta do anything such as click back while clicking a video to start from the beginning!
Hi, CZcams showed my your channel. I want to say I also upgraded to the new one from last year’s model. I believe a firmware fix is in the works for the blackout. That they couldn’t just do it with release is pathetic IMHO after it’s been doing it for years, primarily on CZcams. My Roku Ultra and FireStick 4K simply work. What I got it for was HDR10+ support as I have a Samsung Q80R. My heart was broken because my Denon X4400H apparently doesn’t pass it through. It works if I direct connect it. Sigh. I keep buying these stupid boxes and it’s always something, now the Denon, that kicks me in the a$$. I’m not sure if the Denon passes DolbyVision as, Samsung… it’s not that old of an AVR. I can’t use ARC as I use a Harmony remote. I can’t give HDMI control. Nice video.
Very helpful. Thanks!
Glad it was helpful!
Wow! Thanks for actually pursuing my comment. I unfortunately have reset the old Apple TV to factory settings, and I am donating it to a friend of mine. So I cannot see if I actually had those particular settings on. Which I think I did not. Because I think I was told That it could cause delay in video showing up when you set match screen and video format. Also, if it matters at all, I have CZcams prime. So no commercials play before during or after. So I don’t know if that makes a difference as well. PS… Still a great beard,
but in either case I like how buttery smooth video play is especially if you skip to the middle. And it stopped dropping out DHR in the middle of movies.
In fact, now that I think about it, this happened only in the last 4 months. Because I never used to do any of that stuff before. I have done research on the web and could not find it almost anybody who had the same problems. So figured it was something on my end of the 🍎 TV.
QMS_VRR is the feature you are thinking about, it only works with compatible TV's. You need a 2023 tv to go with this ... :D
The New Apple TV feature is called QMS VRR (Quick Media Switching Variable Refresh Rate). But it requires a TV to support QMS and VRR. I don’t think any TV currently supports QMS. Hopefully TVs with VRR can add QMS. But I don’t know if they can.
Personally, I leave the match on because I want to watch contend in the original frame rate and resolution and let the TV handle the switching rather than having the Apple TV alter the frame rate and resolution. But if the black screen bothers you more than seeing the video altered, then by all means, shut the feature off. Try it both ways and see if you like one over the other.

Geee wizz, thanks dude! This was so annoying before turning it off
glad it helped.
Mine does this with Netflix even with the matching turned off.
You’re the man👍
Apple will somewhat fix the problem in a future software update that isn’t available yet. It’s a solution called QMS VRR (Quick Media Switching Variable Refresh Rate). This is an industry standard for preventing those black outs when switching resolutions and HDR. The only problem with this solution is that it requires both sides to support it. No TV’s currently support QMS VRR, but they probably will starting next year. I’m not sure if TV’s can be updated with just software or whether hardware is required.

QMS only works with framerate matching, changes to dynamic range will still require the black screen handshake switch.
Other than the Apple TV, There won’t be any device that can match content frame rate and dynamic range for all apps.
You just save my life 😅 thanks
With my new Apple TV 4K (has the most current firmware) I had to turn Frame Rate Matching off and set my Denon X3800 AVR's HDMI output to Game in order to fix severe audio sync problems. I have the Apple's video set to 4K SDR/YCbCr/4:4:4 I do get the black screen delays but still leave March Dynamic Range on because if it's turned off, HDR10 and Dolby Vision content is less dynamic and they lose some of their "Pop". Clearly it's a trade off but it is what it is. The bottom line is that the Apple TV 4k has great potential but Apple needs to do a lot better when kit comes to the OS and firmware.
I’ve owned 7 or 8 Apple TV’s through the years and never had this issue until I got this one. Even swapped it for a new one and the new ones doing the same thing. 🤦♂️🤦♂️
I bought the 3 last apple tv thinking they would probably fix it but NO, my question here is why those cheapo firestick and google tv with the exact same feature of matching framerate ON don’t do
That at all and feel snappier
I bought the new one for the hdr10+ feature but If I preset that fonction its worst because the screen will actually blink 2 times now on youtube or any content 😢 the fix for me is to put the main profil to 4k sdr instead of hdr and leave those 2 fonction on its better but far from the speed of any firestick
Thx Greg - fixed my black screen on youtube! was driving me crazy!
Glad it helped.
So i never had this issue with my Sony Bravia A90J (2021 Model) but now I CONSTANTLY have these blackouts every few minutes when streaming ANY content (CZcams, HBO, Netflix, etc) ever since I purchased a 100in Hisense U8K, I believed this was an issue with my new tv. This tv is part of my living room Klipsch THX 7.2.4 theater setup and this issue has absolutely killed the enjoyment of viewing movies on here.
It's absolutely normal, can't be fixed by just Apple only. QMS alias Quick Media Switching is HDMI 2.1 thing, which has to be supported by all devices in hdmi link - player, AVR, TV...
Did you not watch the video? Has nothing to do with QMS. He has Dolby Vision on all the time. A quick fix is to set the apple tv to 4k SDR and then turn on match dynamic range.
@@TheBman3rd Using HDR all the time is wrong, that is not proper setting. So what you call quick fix is not quick fix, that is common setup. SDR by default and auto switching to HDR when requested.
@@TheBman3rd true, but then you lose the 4k screensavers, right? Is there a way to keep 4k screensavers AND eliminate the blackout? (C2 owner)
This isn’t an AppleTV issue, it’s down to how CZcams has been designed to work.
By always having your UI set to Dolby Vision or HDR CZcams needs to change the dynamic range down to SDR to match the adverts as well as the vast majority of videos which are also SDR.
Now between one advert or video ending and the next starting CZcams has been programmed to the match the UI so will also cause the black screen handshake switch each time.
To resolve this you need to set your Video Settings to 4KSDR which will stop the issue for vast majority of CZcams videos you watch, the only time you’ll see this happen again is if either you attempt to watch a HDR video or an advert is in HDR(an advert for Galbani is one such advert that’s in HDR)
so why does the issue not show up on a Series X Xbox or PS5 that is also pushing through Dolby and HDR video. It has to do the same as the Apple TV but has no issues. Its only the Apple TV that this happens with.
@@gregtoope I’m not familiar with the PS5 or Xbox so cannot answer, with the ATV4K it’s all to do the TVs HDMI handshake as it’s matching the dynamic range of the source going from Dolby Vision and dropping down to SDR.
Switch the 4KSDR and just let dynamic range matching take care of when Dolby Vision & HDR are required.
I have a Samsung QN90B so HDR10+ support is a must 😂
I can confirm that it is still doing the same thing today. I have two newest version of the Apple TV 4K 128gb and I have tested them on my 85" QN900B, 65" QN900B, 42" LG C2, 85" Sony X95K, they all black out when using the youtube app. I have 3 different high quality certified 8k 60hz HDMI cables, so it has nothing to do with the cables. Not only that, if I stream enough 4k videos on youtube long enough, I will start to see artifacts on the Apple TV menu and it won't go away until I turn it off and let it rest all night. I disconnect the ATV and plug in the 2021 model immediately, it does not have any issues shown. i got the newest version mainly for watching HDR10+ contents on the QN900Bs, but I am gonna return them tomorrow.
It's your settings. My past 2 Apple TVs never did any of this stuff. 👌💯
The video quality on your phone is pretty good.
Hope they eventually fix it.
hopefully soon
Just bought a new one at Best Buy 5-14-23. I get blackout screens on everything. Turns on and off all by itself. I'm going to take it back to Best Buy tomorrow for a return.
I put the 1st gen back on the TV (55" abt 5 yrs old) and everything works great.
Do not buy a new Apple TV box until they fix the problem. You will tear your hair out trying to figure out what's happening.

Right on spot! Turned off and it works. Thank you
Bikes and beards... Captain Done.....
We're watching the same stuff...... scary!
That might be a tv thing and not the Apple TV.
doubtful as it doesnt happen with Roku, Xbox, PS5 or any other streaming box I've tried
@@gregtoope good point
Omfg 🤦♂️ you do know that its a future update thats going to fix it, right? 🙄
And your point is? Plus we did say that in the video.
@@gregtoope in order for QMS to work your tv has to support it.
