- This is a film of the dedicated USAF members of the famed 8th Tactical Fighter Wing (TFW) keeping the F-4 Phantoms flying their missions during the Vietnam War.
Then 25yr old Crew Chief SSgt Lani Duquette took his Kodak Super 8mm film camera along one day and made a remarkable Day In The Life, Behind The Scenes film of what these flight line men do to "keep 'em flying"
All who served at Ubon from 1965-1974 are a special "Band of Brothers."
I was there Feb 68 to Feb 69 crew chief on f4-C tail # 823,, 497th ,,,I'm 77 yrs old now and still remember it all,had some good times,
I'm making a podcast about Thailand during the Vietnam War, and you were at Ubon in the exact same period I'm examining. Would you be interested in doing an interview for my project, as it would be very helpful?
Great video. I was stationed there for 1.6 years (6 months TDY and then right back again for 12 months, from 1972-1974. I was in the triple nickel (555). Lots of cool memories!
I was stationed at Ubon, first F-4C Squd. on the new base Oct. 1965, 431st TFS, Red Deviles. I was an E-5 and Crew Chief. Had the privelage of a back seat ride, FCF, clean Acft, for flight controls repair, pilot really put the plane through every thing it would have to do in aerial combat, my head was in my lap many times, went so high the sky was turning dark blue as was my face, someon should have warned me not eat lunch, my oxygen mask wasn't a good barf bag.Total embarrassment. I have many pictures and memories from this tour. USAF, 1961-1969, J43171C, E-6
Yep been there done that at pax river naval air test center 1960-63. At that time the flight crew's had to pull flight time every month so was able to fly the back seat many times. What a rush!!
Was at Ubon from August 12th, 1969, to August 28 1970, spent many a night pulling security duties around the flight line, worse post was sitting in guard tower at the bomb dump, always something going at night, didn't get to sit around much. except for the tower or sitting in a bunker. Many lonely nights, just waiting for something to happen.
I also ...... used to pull duty in that same Bomb dump...72-73
Salute to those airmen of the USA Air Force who served for their country during the Vietnam war. Greetings from Prince Rupert British Columbia Canada.
My dad was there 12/68 - 12/69. He flew the F-4 in the front seat.
Looks like Dad's plane at 6:30 during take-off roll- his tail number was FG 66-748, would have had a red MiG killer star on the intake after Jan 3 1968
We never wore our covers on the flight line at Chu Lai.
VMFA-314 Com/Nav ‘68.
Nice pictures ofVMFA-115 from Chu Lai.
Nice video, welcome home.
Man this is some amazing footage. My old man was an F4 pilot out of Udorn back around this time.
I wonder what he told you about his time in that war. One hell of an experience.
My uncle Eddie was a crew chief at Udorn on a F105 '68-'69!
I was an F 4 crew chief and this is one of the best videos I’ve ever seen.
Video quality is outstanding, and the added music did make it that much better!
I was at Ubon at the same time. I was a gun mechanic on the AC-130s.
I was there then as well. I originally deployed there with the 13th TBS B-57G “Red Birds” in September 1970.
My uncle was at Udorn around this time on a F105 crew!
I was there in February till August with the 335 tfs from Seymour Johnson AF Base. 1973 TDY
Heavy!!!! 70-71
25th TFS. I flu an FCF. Watched and took photos of Paveways and CBU'S. Dropped on "you know who". Not a good idea to use the term we used back then! Christmas:
Bob Hope, Gold
Diggers, Johnny Bench. Forgot the rest.
Good to talk to you guys again.
Worked at the AC130 Gun Shop 1973-74, Later loaded F-4s.
I was an AGE mechanic assigned at UBON 1972-1974.
50 years ago today I was working out of the AGE shop at Ubon. I was TDY there out of Seymour Johnson as part of Operation Linebacker 1 and the Easter Offensive of 72. I worked out of the hydraulic area and worked on a lot of bomb lift trucks.
The opening scene showing F4E's with an SA tail designator is of the arrival of the 334th TFS Fighting Eagles from the 4th TFW out of Seymour Johnson AFB, N. Carolina. The 334th is the descendant squadron from the Eagle Squadron of American pilots that volunteered to fly for England before the US entered WWII. Along with the 335th TFS "the Chiefs" we deployed as part of Operation Linebacker that resulted from N. Vietnam coming south across the DMZ in spring of 1972. As Flightline Maintenace Officer I arrived a day later because I wac OIC of an enroute support team for the F4's..
I was in 4TH MMS, deployed from SJAFB to Ubon from April-October 1972. Don’t know if I was on your flight or one not far behind, but I remember how awesome it was when we got there and saw our 4th TFW birds already there on the ramp.
The full name of this location is Ubon Rachathani. There are many Americans still living in this ring-road structured city not far from the Mekong River. There are many nice people that live in this Lao-Thai area. There is an excellent bakery on the south side of town, and there is a lot of young people owning businesses there and they have an amazing wax carving event every where where they build huge wax structures and have a parade in the streets. Shopping mall is adjacent to the Sunny Grand Hotel and British Walmart (Big C) has invaded to push all the farmers back to their farms...i joke, but its true. Oh, also, very very ironically there is ONE mexican restaurant there and its very very excellent, their echillada with moie sauce was amazing, very unexpected! Seriously, when you have been in asia for months and months and you are dying for anything else that doesnt taste like asian food....omg...there are very many surprising things like this in Thailand.
I was there in 73 with 335th tfs out Seymour Johnson AF we had F4E ,and I was a crew chef on them.
I was a F4 crew chief. Love the film!
Yeah brings back lots on cool memories, wild assignment, I was also assigned on Utapo RTAFB, 1974-1975 help close her down in 1975.
I was stationed at Ubon. Feb 72 to Feb 73. I was a Crew Chief on F4D. Was in the Night Owl Squadron the 497th. This is a great video. Lots of memories. We were in Linebacker II Hanoi bombing during Christmas of 72.
Also 497th in 1968 crew chief
Had friends in the 497th in Madrid Spain. I was stationed in Zaragoza, 431st FIS, F-102s.
I was at Ubon 73-74 Tower Controller, one runway simultaneous opposite direction traffic. EC 47’s, AC 130’s & F 4’s. OV 10’s when I 1st got there.
I was at Udorn with the 432 AMS in 1970. Spent 1971 with the 366th AMS in Danang RVN
My dad was there,.F-4 crew chief..if I remember the dates right,.he was there July 69-July70. I've seen pics, but video is great
Thanks for sharing..
What an amazing adventure Thailand was in the day,,take care brothers and sisters,,😊
I was at 432nd FMS Udorn in 1970 and in 8th FMS Ubon in 1971.
Simply awesome!
My father was there in 72-73.
I was at Ubon In Feb of 1969 TDY from Korat while our runway was being repaved. I was a 462 with the 469th TFS. We brought the F4-E's from Eglin. At that time our weapon teams were not integrated with MMS. There was no preload either 15 500 pounders one at a time. When we first got to Korat in November we put on 18 750's. That didn't last very long. Then it became 18 500 pounders and finally 15 with 10 on outboards and 3 on right inboard TER and 2 on the left to make room for the ECM pod. I think I see a few F4-D's that came from the 25TFS from Eglin as they were the group that tested the smart bombs.

PLTOFF Mark McGrath RAAF a member of 79SQN Royal Australian Air Force tragically lost his life January 3, 1968 whilst attempting to land CAC Sabre (F86) A94-986 at Royal Thai Air Force base Ubon Ratchathani, Thailand.

Thanks for posting , was there 69-70 . In Special Services . Great learning , cultural experience . Many fond memories .
In 64 I was Avionics Tech Rep at Cherry point with VMFA -115 Silver Eagles. Ubon RTAFB in 66.Phantoms Phorever.
Awesome vid.. thanks from NZ 👍🇳🇿
Intel E-4 at Udorn 70 -72. At the time, any filming on the flight line was strictly forbidden. This piece would have been classified at least confidential. I knew guys who were hauled off by the SPs for having cameras even close to the flight line. Much of this material was later (10 -15 yrs) declassified. I'm still amazed at seeing this so many years later.
I was TDY to Ubon in 72 Munitions Line Delivery Red 5 was pulling 2 trailers of Sparrows and Sidewinders off the line when mortars hit short of the Spectre birds.
8th AMS here. 1970-1971. So long ago but it seems like yesterday.
Great video! I was languishing in the cold fog at Hahn Germany 1967-69 honestly wishing I was in SEA.
I was there in ‘71 at Transient Alert; next to the C-130 gunships;
My hero as a kid was Robin Olds. While all my classmates picked a doctor, fireman, LEO or sports star, while I chose the man who was likely the most talented all-around aviator and leader of that war. Hats off to the 8th and all who flew the Wolfpack colors. Rest in peace ⭐General Olds. Heaven is safer with you flying an eternal MIGCAP. (complete with mustache!)
What a bunch of hooey.
Just found this great film was there all of 70 408 MMS munitions loading mainly in the 25th squadron. Those tail numbers bring back a lot of memories. Used to sit on the revetments when we had down time and watch the F-4s take off at night awesome sight. 12 hour shifts, monsoon rains always wet, midnight chow getting there late and no food, rice bugs all over the place, hotter than hell, but I would do it all over again worked with some great guys
Phabulous video!
Man i wish i was there flying one of those Phantoms 😢
Just up the street 432nd Tactical Fighter Wing, Udorn RTAFB. 432nd Security Police Squadron and Night Reconnaissance Observer Det. 5 40th ARRS. 74'-75'. Thanks for a great video, definitely had the same flight patterns at Udorn of Phantom "Home of the Hunters!"
RTAF Udorn 1968. Checkerboard. From 12 tac recon TSN TDY here. Thai people were great.
Superb footage and editing!!!
Great job on the video, very clear and in focus compared to others from back then.
Great job!!!!!
Excellent footage. I was at Ubon with the 621st Lion squadron as a weapons tech, 07/70 - 06/72. I visited the base 04/2004, but due to the high alert with the commotion in the south of Thailand at the time, the base was restricted.
Great footage. When I see period film like this I wonder how many miles of old Super-8 is sitting in a shoebox in a closet, forgotten, or under the misguided impression that no one is interested in seeing it.
Bring them out !
Met a date named Ubon in Guam back in the late 80's on Andersen AFB...we were resupplying by the Gompers...loved mini-trucks and Sandy-U's!!!😉
Hell yeah, boys!!
Nice video, I have some B/W pics and a few slides, no movies. I was in the MMS at this time. I remember 794 coming back from that mission. The day the Phantom blew a tire on takeoff and burnt on the runway. A day when another load crew blew the centerline tank and 2 AIM 7's off in the revetment just across and over one from our crew. (Which WE got to cleanup after.) Aim 7 guidance motor activated during taxi out to EOR. Sapper caught heading for Specter area. Greeting a Very Pissed Off Marine Col in the transit area with hung ordinance. (expended ejector carts on TER and the whole left wing. Said it flew like a pig all the way back.) Working 7 12's for the 1st 2 months on base then back at it for Linebacker and during the Bien Hoa "turnarounds". Spent lots of sweaty wet and rainy wet hours on that flightline. Bob Hope Show. Oh, and rice bugs... LOL
I was there Dec 72 - Dec 73 . 8th FMS AGE bomb lift shop .
Wow, is this the same plane 68-755 that I had at Kunsan, Korea in 1980? The plane was still in good shape when I was crew chief but we were in the 35th tactical fighter squadron, 8th wing
FYI, it’s the F-4 Phantom II, it’s currently not in service.
@@grzyb11
According to Google (the fount of all wisdom and knowledge :-)) still in service with Iran, Japan, South Korea, Greece, and Turkey.

I knew some guy who humped the flight line there. A nephew was TDY there as an MMS. Dropped of of college because "I'm tired of people telling me what to do!" Told me that before basic I LAUGHED and LAUGHED!
He gets out of Basic, writes me a letter asking why I only made E-4 in 3 years. Took the letter to work and we composed a Group reply telling him in Very graphic obscene detail where he stood, where he could go, and what he could do when he got there. :-)
C130 A model kicking flairs balls 7 was my airplane..Blind Bat..
Good clean super 8 movie.
1977 -67 AMMO . COL Olds was Wing Commander and Col James was Vice Commander.
Nice so far..can't find what I'm lookin for..but cool.
I was the Admin Officer for the 8Th TFW Field Maint Sq the whole year of 1970, and the Orderly Rm area where my office was, is in a Bldg just a bit away from where that whole line of revetments were. I had to laugh at some of the airmen with their hand over their ears, and all those big ole J-79 engines were doing at that point were "idling". They were pretty much unbearable when four of them would take off, and their after-burners would kick in. On the 4th day I got there, we got hit with a sapper attack; they were after the AC-130 Gunships...if that all surprises anyone, Google it.
71-72 C130A, Blind Bat, kicking flairs. Ubon Thailand
69-70 C-130s TDY out of Naha Okinawa

Thanks for uploading of this nice video! Can somebody help me what types of bombs on 755 F-4D in 8:53 in this video. I wanna build it in 1:48 scale. Thanks for Your help!
they are so many F-4 Phantom ll, in all different variants that has been station in the former U.S Clark Air Base in the Philippines until the base has finally deactivated in 1992. still just wondering why the Philippine government administration during that time, didnt comprehend nor even tried, to possibly make an agreement to transfer those remaining number of units of those Phantoms, to the Philippines as a token of friendship between the two countries, at least for this reason. my point is, those said Phantoms are no longer useful to the U.S service anymore after its last tour of duty, during the 1991 Gulf War in Kuwait, against the Iraqi invasion of the said country. since then, the successor of the Phantom, such as the F-16, F/A-18, the F-14, the F-15, and even the A-10, are all fully operational in the U.S service. and the F-4 was no longer needed, except turning them into a unmanned target drone.

crazy. shirtless, no ear protection, camera on flight line hah. regulations are a bit different now a days. great video though.
Yeah in a combat environment lots of regs go out the window . Also when it's 97 degrees and humid as hell shirts are optional for the guys working . They looked like short haired hippies !

I was a F4 Crew Chief at Ubon and at Da Nang... Ubon was MUCH better.. LOL
Mike, when did you serve at Ubon?
I was at DaNang in May 70-71, then mobilized to Ubon in Apr-Oct 72 with the 4th TFW. I was in the 366 AMS in DaNang and the 4 AMS in Ubon. When I returned from RVN to SJAFB I was assigned to the 335 TFS at first then they consolidated the avionics guys to the AMS. In Ubon I worked both field shop and flightline. After the USAF I ended up doing 21 years in the Army and retired as a LTC.
Very COOL video. VERY BAD music. You would be better off dubbing a film projector sound over this... for nostalgic feel.
