Load Crew 26, May 1970 -71 8TFW wolfpack, Ubon,Thailand Robert Barber #4 Joe Krzywosinski #3, Phil Conlin #2 & Rick Mayer LCC. You see other activites on the flightline.
There Jun 72 to Jun 73, 25 TFS. Dropped LGB, EOGB, dumb bombs, Igloo White (sensors) and Pave Buff (LORAN bombing, sucked). 87 missions to Route Pack 6, many more to lower NVN and SVN. Ground troops did wonders keeping the F-4s armed and flying. Loved the flying and closeness of the officers and enlisted, this is how the AF should run on a day to day basis. Thanks for the video. Great people made it a great tour!
Robert Thanks so much for this. God bless you and yours. My dad was also there at that time working on those planes. He loved serving. Were you a part of the Wolf Pack wing? Are you looking to connect with others from that time?
Was there Jan 70-71 in the 408th MMS load crew remember you Robert loaded mainly in the 25 th squadron thanks for the video I spent a lot of time on the MJ-1 Load crew Mike Bailey LCC, #2 Denis Gabioud, #3 John Bemiss(me) #4 Melvin Jefferies.
Thank you for uploading this. I appreciate all you men. God bless you!! My dad was an air craft mechanic there back then, also he said he and his crew would help load too sometimes. May you all heal and be mindfulness in the Lord Jesus.
Wow. Tell your dad thank you for his service. God bless you and him. My dad was also a mechanic there at that time working on those same planes. I always hear about the pilots, but not a lot about the mechanics. Are yous looking to connect with others that were there at that time.
Brings back fond memories. Worked in MER/TER shop for a month just after arrival, Jan 1968, then in pre-load area until Mar 1969. Call sign "Cobra 5". Neat to see those jammers and tugs on the flight line. Worked with Van Ray George Fry, Don Bozich, Maki, Magnuson and many others. Mike Hall, I think I have a picture of you with our shift.
My father was in the 408th MMS from November '70 - November '71 (SSgt Lynch). He was a Controller from November to June, and then Line Delivery Crew Chief from June to November. Of his 8 years in the USAF he was the most proud of his time at Ubon.
I was at Ubon from 71 to 73. Worked in the F-4 radar shop. The video also brings back fond memories. I really don't have any bad memories at Ubon. I developed a true respect for the Thai people that carries me to this day.
remember when the F4 crashed on take off loaded down with bombs....which blew up one after the other.....i was on the baht bus going off base and watched it happen
Wow, yellow jammer, and J-4s. Preloads of M- 117, 750 pounders. F-4Ds,centerline Mk-82s,on Mer and Ter racks. Wonderful day for Weapons on the flightline. Jammers are all olive drab now...
I remember when you guys came in with you newer F-4Es from SJ. We would be out all day long working the F-4D fire control radar problems and the radar guys from SJ were always back at the shop playing cards. Those were good memories though.
I was there during that time. What I remember was when you guys came you brought your AGE equipment with you and took a huge strain off the rest of us AGE guys. We actually went on 6 - 10 hour days for a while, from 7 - 12 hour days. Didn't last but about 2 - 3 months because the newer equipment that came with you got worn out, due to the use it had, and we went back on 7 - 12s. Good while it lasted, though.
I did the same thing you did . I actually did one year more as permanent location. I was in fms I think. My one year permanent was at my request. When I finally got back to sjafb my car, which was in storage, was trashed. Never got compensated. Still have pictures of my tour.
Worked 408th MMS Weapons Loading most of the time in "Nite Owl" from Feb '70 to Jan '71. #4 Larry Hardy, #3 Phil Hooks, #2 Duane Schaffer, CC Phil McConnell. Thanks for posting brought back some good memories.
Thank you so much for your service! I appreciate you much love and respect. My dad was there at the time and he was a night owl too. Are you looking to connect with more people from that time?
Nice video! Load crew 21 Tucker's Truckers #2 man. 72-73. Always thought MJ 4 would be great to change engines in a car. Loaded lots of LGBs. Loved watching those FCF takeoffs. We never had a light-all at that EOR, always worked with a flashlight, so in the dark... LOL
Sept 69- Sept 70 408th MMS weapons loading. Loaded all the squadrons. Worked arm-dearm night sappers showed up. Great view of fire fight. Mike Weiss, Mike Pruitt, Ron Davis, Ciro Bua all weapons load crew guys. Line expediter Tsgt Davis. Thanks to Robert Barber, fantastic video. Will send you a copy of Phantom Phlyer of sapper attack. Thanks again.
My father Mervin Evenson was squadron commander of Satan's Angels. 433rd Tactical Fighter squadron Sept 1969-July 1970 they dropped a lot LGBs "smart bombs You may have loaded weapons on his F4D he also flew the F4D that emitted the LASER that lit the Target
I was at Ubon 1971-1972. Worked in the AGE (ground equipment) shop. The Thai mechanics were some of the best around. Remember a small barn owl somehow flew into the bay I worked in and got up in the top area, flying from one end of the shop to the other and back again. Did it for maybe 5 minutes. Some of the Thai mechanics decided it would make a good lunch so got a bunch or red rags, put a couple of nuts and bolts in them and made "baseballs". Threw at that owl till one finally hit it. They cleaned it and ate it for lunch. Wasn't much bigger than a quail so no one got full. :) We lost one of our C-130 gun ships while I was there, with the crew. Very sad time. They were grounded for a few days. Weren't sure if the Cong had some up with a rocket that could avoid the flares and seek just the heat from the engines. My Dad was in the Navy on the USS Bismarck Sea when it was strafed and sunk (they lost 318 men) (I have the original clipping from the newspaper that my Mom cut out) and something he told me about his time in the service was "I wouldn't take a million dollars for what I saw and went through but wouldn't give you 50 cents to do it again". Guess that is much like I look at my Air Force days. June 1969 - January 1976.
Hello Robert Barber nice to hear from you i was born in Ubon town and been work in USAF. Ubon Air base missing history..hope to looking forward ..thanks the past.
Thank you for your service God bless you. Much love and respect for you veterans, you guys in particular too. Are you looking to connect with people that were there?
There Dec 12 1969 thru Dec 15 1970 25th TFS training NCOIC T SGT and flight line mech, It was hot and heavy Jan 2nd 1970 2 am when the VC came through the wire .flares flying, tracers and it was combat 101 .TSGT George J. Johnson Two years later i retired, Mar 2 1972 George AFB Ca.
I was station at Ubon 408th MMS TDY Mar 69 to Sept 69 and then back again Sept 71 to Sept 73. I was a Sgt worked on the gantry loading the bomb on the Mer and Ter rack to go on the F-4
In honor of my father and his service with the 408th MMS I've created a Facebook Community for those who also served at Ubon with the 408th MMS. Stop by. Like it, share photos and stories. All are welcome.
Thank you. Thank you also for your service and God bless you and yours. I have much love and respect for yous. Is there another social media outlet other than Facebook? I would like to join but I don't have Facebook.
I was at Ubon 1973 -1974. This gives me a lot of reflecting. Great video, Robert. It would be much better if you could eliminate the film projector 'clicking' and just have the background music. ;)
Thank you for your service. I appreciate it. Much respect and love to you. Were you a part of Wolf Pack Wing at all or are you looking to connect with anyone that was there at that time?
Wow, I can see my old revetment C16. The last one down painted red. I was with the 435th TFS Eagles (FO). Do you know what month/year this was filmed? Thanks for the memories!!
You need to keep on the VA. I got a 10% for tinnitus and when I got my paperwork for it I noticed that they added me as a Agent Orange candidate. They sprayed the parameter of the base often with it and stored it there. Get an attorney with knowledge of VA claims. Get what you have coming to you.
That weird feeling when you see the guys kinda goofing around, looking cool in their shades and the mighty F4s with their angular wings. All the hardware that war gamers would love, and yet we know those bombs were full of napalm and will burn childrens' skin to their bones and they cry in agony. If not napalm, they could be part of the other ordinance, you know, the seven million tons we dropped over there. More than double the bombs dropped in all of Asia and Europe in ww2. I can't blame the guys though, but it is a weird. I've been to Ubon three times and landed at the civilian airport in town. A reason I checked this.
Phil! My kids love Pappy Phil time. I'm going to have a beer with him on Friday. He wants to get in touch with you. If you reply, we can exchange emails! Andrew Collins/ SSG / Army /OIF / 07-19

Holy crap...at 2:39, the guy in the white t-shirt looks like my late brother. The clip is too short to be sure.
What was your brother's name
