  • For many, New York City is a place of dreams. But John Torres knows it's darker sides. He and his family live in one of the city's homeless shelters.
For more than a year John Torres and his wife Zoe have been looking for an apartment, without any luck. A daughter being added to the equation hasn't made things any easier. John has a part-time job, but it doesn’t pay enough for them to make ends meet. The challenge he faces is one affecting many. As of January 2023, around 650,000 Americans are in a similar position - the highest number of homeless people in the USA ever, with more than 90,000 in New York alone. Following the COVID-19 pandemic, many aid programs have been discontinued and the cost of housing has risen so dramatically, that in some cases residents can no longer afford the rent and end up on the streets. Many of the organizations offering aid are privately funded, like the one helping John Torres. But finding affordable housing is difficult. A report by Benjamin Alvarez Gruber.

John, please do not have any more children until you get on your feet financially and steady. If you have more children, you will only find it harder to climb out of poverty. You have a beautiful baby girl, work hard for her now so that she does not have to struggle later in life. Marry your girlfriend so that she has financial security should something happen to you (New York City is a very violent and dangerous place to try to survive in). Best of luck and congratulations on turning your life around and staying out of crime.

Maybe a lot of parents really cant understand that its not the same as 30 years ago, and that getting a job simply isnt cutting it anymore. You either got to have a job that pays like $6000/mo at least, or you got to have a lot of patience, or you have to be really lucky and have good friends you are prepared to share a house with. You cant "just get" a place nowadays. This is sad. But there are several reasons why NYC has a housing crisis: 1. Not enough supply to keep up with demand. The population of NYC has increased to 8.5 million people. and the only new construction of homes is for wealthy investors and investment companies that buy them and add the assets to their balance sheets. 2. People who lack marketable job skills and higher education. For people who only have a high school diploma, well, an adequate paying job to support one's self, much less a family, will be virtually impossible to do. Paying rent and other expenses will also be difficult, to say the least. Of course, there is more that I can write on the housing issues in NYC.

How about we tax rich out of touch people and elect politicians willing to rake in corporate greed and control over our basic necessities?
