I Built An AWESOME Skateboard Mini Ramp IN MY GARAGE!

- After four months of on and off building I finally finished my GARAGE MINI RAMP!
This has been a lifelong goal for me and I’m so stoked that it’s come true.
The ramp is 20’ long, 8’ wide, and 2’ tall. I used a nice, mellow 7’ transition radius and the ramp has about 7’ of flat bottom.
The transitions are framed with SPF#2 2x4s @ 6” o/c, and the flat bottom is framed @10” o/c.
I finished the ramp with 1 layer of 3/8” Select Plywood and 1 layer of ¼” Meranti Hardwood Plywood (for the actual riding surface).
I basically copied the @keenramps 2’ mini halfpipe. If I had infinite money, I would have ordered one from them, but I wanted to save as much money (for skate gear) as possible.
Except for getting my friends/family with a truck to drive me to the hardware store (can’t fit 4x8 sheets of plywood in my sedan), I did all the work myself. I am NOT a professional builder at all, so I went slowly and tried to be as patient as possible.
I considered filming everything and making an in-depth tutorial video BUT my scatterbrain made it very difficult for me to effectively film and work on the ramp. There are tons of great tutorials on CZcams, and if you watch a few of these and think things through then you can do this yourself.
In total, I spent ±$800 CAD for everything. Full disclosure - I work for a large engineering company and I get a contractor’s discount (between 10-20% off depending) on building materials.
In a few months I’m planning on removing the ¼” surfacing and adding another layer of 3/8” plywood to strengthen the ramp. It feels strong as is, but I think another layer would smooth everything out nicely and add some extra strength.
Let’s skate!
Materials:
Transition Frames 2 Sheets 4’x8’ ¾” Select Plywood
Decking 2 Sheets 4’x8’ 3/8” Standard Plywood (Cut into 2’ Strips & Layered)
Framing ~40 pcs SPF#2 2x4 Lumber 8’ Long
Coping Upcycled 2-3/8” Diameter Metal Fence Posts
Surface Layer #1 4 Sheets 4’x8’ 3/8” Standard Plywood
Surface Layer #2 4 Sheets 4’x8’ ¼” Meranti Hardwood Plywood
Fasteners No.2 3” Galvanized Screws
Tools:
Power Drill / Impact Driver
Jigsaw
Circular Saw

Duuuude it looks great. Already shreddy! Your going to pop outta your garage in April lookin like tony hawk❤
Hahaha thanks dude! Although we've got 4 skateparks in my city, we don't have a single mini ramp (we do have an old and super cracked and sketchy and steep 4' mini at the old abandonned park but it's garbage) in town, so I NEEEEDED one!
Yes! Love this… new to your channel dude 👊 look forward to watching more! So jealous of that mini too. Top work!
Hey thanks dude! Really appreicate your kind words! I'm very fortunate that I have (A) a big garage, (B) a one-car household and (C) a super cool wife who actually gave me the idea! I'm currently trying to learn a new trick every day for the 37 days leading up to my 37th birthday (all mini ramp tricks) so stay tuned for that full video in about a week!
Thanks for the sub! Stay radical!
@@skate_oasis get it 💪 I’m 35 missus and little boy. Started to skate again after 20 years last summer 😬 I do a similar thing only I just upload my sessions & progress with a some cheesy music and subtitles 😆 yet to pluck the courage to talk to the camera yet
@@Sk8Comeback haha I understand that! It felt so weird at first but got easier and easier as I made more videos!
YEAH! Living the dream!!! Hopefully one day for me.
It’s still pretty surreal every time I open the garage to see a frickin HALF PIPE in there 😂 still need to get some better lights and a space heater (or two) since my garage isn’t heated. Thanks for watching dude!
Looks so fun!! I live in San Diego and my younger brother might get a mini ramp for his backyard! Would be so fun. We are in our late 30’s and grew up in Ohio in the 90’s with no skate parks so we can barely ride transition. Can’t wait to learn some of these tricks!!
It’s the perfect size for fun 😂 thanks for your comment! I’m currently trying to learn a trick every day in the 37 days leading up to my 37th birthday as like a celebration of completing the ramp!
@@skate_oasis so rad!! It looks like you'll be able to pull it off! I just started skating again in the last 2 years after a 10 year hiatus. Rolled my ankle really badly in my mid twenties and tore multiple ligaments. No health insurance so just got an air cast, crutches and a cane and let it heal but it didn't fully recover and I can just be walking and it pops my ankle out of place. Luckily it is a rare hinderance and didn't stop me from surfing, soaping, BMX and skiing. It scared me away from skating because I've hurt myself skating more than all those other spots combined 🤣 So glad I got back into it and my brother just got back into this summer as well. I l have learned 12 new tricks in the past 2-3 months. Stuff I never thought I would ever do, like dropping in or blunt stalls! Can't wait to keep adding to my bag and getting more transition and lip tricks under my belt. Happy early birthday dude! I put out 2 skate edits over the summer if you want to check out my progression. I will keep watching your videos!
Congrats man that is awesome. Be really cool to set up a wider shot too. I'm experimenting with a gimbal at the moment with tracking software so the camera follows me, would be useful in a situation like this! Great that you have winterproofed, looking forward to more content. Wish I had the space for this I'd love to have one for me and my kids!
You could always build a mini mini lol (check out @rampsbycrisco on instagram, he builds teeny tiny little mini ramps [like 10' x 4' x 17" high])
I've definitely considered getting a gimbal or a motion tracker but I've decided against it. I actually really like static video shots, it makes me think about angles and framing and how to keep things interesting.
@@skate_oasis I will check them out! I haven't fully tested the tracker yet, it might be more of a pain than it's worth but I'll try it for my next one
Wow thats great, good one pick of tricks. Wish i also had a ramp😊
Make no mistake - I know exactly how lucky I am to have (A) A wife who doesn't mind this taking up space and (B) a Big garage and we only have one car. Thanks for watching dude!
Glad to hear bro, best wife fo sure. Ahh sweet my garage is pretty small lol can barley park my car in it but i have my little box hide out i built behind a abandoned factory. Ofc great footage, would be fun to do a collab someday, some old school tricks flat@@skate_oasis
Dude that is sick! I’m looking into doing the same. I’m 41 and my son is 11. Funny part is I think he’s getting better than me lol
That’s awesome! There’s a ton of excellent resources out there to help! Let me know if I can be of assistance! 11 year olds are no joke! We’ve got the knowledge but they’ve got the courage and the ability to bounce back! Thanks for watching! 🤙
Does the 20’ length include the platforms? Reason I am asking is I am thinking about putting one of these in a shed and need to know how long the shed should be. Would a 20’ shed be long enough?
It does include the platforms yes! As long as it’s 20’ inside then it’ll fit.
Thanks, The Keen 2.5 high ramp has a 6’ transition and comes in at 18’ with the platforms, so your height is obviously shorter and length is two feet longer. Would you recommend me go with their dimensions or yours? Do you think their flat length is too short?
do you find that the 3/8" ply and 1/4" top layer is strong enough? Most of what i read says to double up the 3/8" ply then add the top surface. I'd like to build one on a budget so if I can save the cost of 4 additional sheets of material I will..
No - it wasn't strong enough. After about a week I ended up stripping off the top layer and adding another layer of 3/8". It just felt way too bouncy.
@@skate_oasis cool, thanks for the reply.. I kinda wondered as I skated a ramp that a guy had built with 2 layers of 1/4" ply then a top layer of 1/4" hardboard and it was pretty bouncy and sketchy.. I'm a big dude, (200lbs) so I want it solid.. I'm 40 and just got back into skating last year as a way to teach my 15yo daughter. Now she wants to learn to ride ramps and I always had a blast on them. Just need this Canadian weather to warm up so I can start building! Great vids bud, your ramp looks fun!
