  • This coconut and lentil dal is the dream one pot Sunday night dinner, so simple to make, perfect for batch cooking and a freezer staple. It's also vegan, has a short and inexpensive ingredient list and just feels so cosy. The recipe is from our brand new app, which is coming out any day now. It'll have over 400 plant-based recipes, alongside loads of recipe videos, a meal planner, shopping lists and yoga videos.
    Here's the recipe:
    - 400g of dry green lentils, 2 cups
    - 2x 400 ml tins of coconut milk
    - 3 cloves of garlic, finely chopped
    - 2 large tomatoes, chopped into small pieces
    - 1 teaspoon of ground cumin
    - 1 teaspoon of curry powder
    - 1 teaspoon of paprika
    - 1 teaspoon of chilli flakes (optional)
    - Salt and pepper to taste
    To make the vegan coconut and lentil dal
    Place a pan over a medium heat and add the chopped garlic with olive oil and salt, let that cook for a minute or two before adding all the spices followed by the chopped tomatoes. Stir well, letting them fry together for a few minutes before stirring through the lentils, followed by the coconut milk.
    Bring the mix to the boil before reducing to simmer over a low temperature, leave to cook uncovered for about an hour until thick and creamy - making sure to stir it every ten to fifteen minutes, ensuring it doesn't stick to the bottom of the pan and adding a splash of water if it feels like it's drying out.
    Once cooked, stir through a little more salt and serve. We love it with avocado, chilli flakes and coconut yoghurt.

    lentil dal is saying dal dal twice just as saying chai tea-- chai is tea !! lentils is dal ! you may say Dal-rice as dal is usualy eaten with a combination of rice and maybe a pappadum on the side for some crunch. or dal- roti as a combination of dal with unleavened flat bread made with whole wheat flour. The most commonly eaten dal in India is "toor" dal and mung dal which basically is split pigeon peas and split mung beans. the Indian way to do is we cook the dal with water and a pinch or turmeric in a pressure cooker. meanatime in a pan heat some oil throw in some cumin seeds, black mustard seeds - let splutter then add a handul of curry leaves, 1 small onion finely chopped, 1 tomato finely chopped, 2-3 cloves of garlic and about 2 green chillies finely chopped . cook till tomatoes are soft and add the cooked dal to this and let simmer for about 5-10 mins on low heat. most dals do not need a lot of spices. In the state of Punjab a very nutritious version is made with a combination of whole black lentils ( called black Udad in hindi) and kidney beans called "ma ki dal" some states in India love to add something called Hing or the english word for it is (Asefotedia - its a kind of resin also used in Portuguese cooking) you have to add just a pinch or 2 of this for about 2 cups of dal. Asefotedia has medical benefits to reduce or eliminate flatulence.

      Buddha Piyao Dal” has a double meaning: It is both the word for lentils and beans and the term for a thick purée or soup made from lentils.

  • @muziktotheears
    @muziktotheears Před 5 lety

    It's best to wash lentils well and then soak them for a few hours before you start cooking them. This will make them easier on your stomach and you absorb most nutrients that way

    • @j.w8680
      @j.w8680 Před 3 lety

      Not necessarily true of all lentils. I only rinse red lentils a few times, but put straight into boilng water afterwards. Soaking red lentils would only leave you with mush. Grean lentils don't need to be f pre-soaked, but you are right, it does reduce cooking time greatly as the lentils absorb some of the liquid as they are soaked. We soak our basmati rice for approximately 15-30 minutes, rinse it 2 or 3 times, drain and then use about 1 and a half cuos of water for 1 cup of rice ( usual proportions for unsoaked basmati rice would be 2 cups of water to 1 cup of rice). We boil it on medium boil til only a few centimetres of liquid is visible and then add the lid to completely cover, lowering to a very small glame or lowest simmer and it cooks off in about a couple more minutes. Checking rice with a fork (or to mix in salt when it first starts to boil) helps to keep the rice from going sticky as it seperates the starch a little. I tend to skim off sny residue as it boils 3 times as rice often contains dirt.

    Congratulation!!! Be happy and healthy with your baby. The recipe sounds yummy, but I think I already made something similar, because there are so many versions and ways how to prepare curry - you can add veggies, lentils, beans, tofu, chick pea....Only comment - if this is meant for 4 people, it must be very heavy and fat, hard to diggest. If the coconut milk is full fat, there will be together with oil for resting more than 40 g of fat? I can not imagine to digest it..

    • @deliciouslyella
      @deliciouslyella  Před 5 lety +1

      Sadly the old app was very difficult and expensive to update, hence why we could only do it every 3-4 months. As it was a one of payment it’s also become totally unsustainable for us, and sadly we had to take the difficult decision to withdraw that app and create something new. So we’ve taken all the feedback about how to make it better and created something really special. The new app (which is totally new rather than an update) will launch in February with 400 plant based recipes, lots and lots of really easy to follow recipe videos, a meal planner and shopping list section, a much much better search function and favourite feature as well as about 40 yoga videos. The app will then be updated with new recipes and content a few times a week, so there's always something new for you. It’ll be 99p per month, and you’ll get a free trial and will keep the old app as it is. That being said the old app has to stay on the phone it was purchased on, apple won't let it move phones xxxx
