Yes he had chance to make a deal by giving 20% of his country to Putin. The whole of the Donbas area and Odessa ,all the blacksea Ukrainian area and that would've made Ukraine a landlocked country. But the deal was also for zelensky to step down from presidency and allow Putin put a puppet government he likes.

"Without beeing attacked first"? You are missing not something but every thing. Ukrainian army had been bombing and shelling 2 counties of their territory with predominantly Russian speaking folks. By far not all of them were Russians, but they did not support a bloody coup in Kiev organized and financed by pro-Isrealy lobby in USA (Victoria Nuland was the leader with $6 bln). So they did not succumb to Kiev zionistic mob. Zelenskey is Jew, as 63% of nowadays Ukraine's government.
So Kiev goverment forces commanded by Zelenskey were killing civilians. About 15 000 were killed in 2 provinces. Folks lived without water, electricity, gas. Hiding in cellars. They were very angry with Putin for he did not protect and avange them. In Donezk main city of rebelles, with law and constution abiding folks in those provinces there is a big cemitry where children are burried. Why everybody in the world is indignant when Jews kill Palestinian children, and keep mum when Jew Zelenskey kills Russian, Ukrainian, Greek children? Donbass has prominant Greek and Armenian diaspora.
Putin was kind of afraid to punish Kiev military for 8 years running. But when Ukraine and USA with EU aired their plans to include Ukraine into NATO (Ukraine wrote down into its constitution a provision, that Kiev joins NATO), Putin saw the threat to Russia (NATO nuclear rockets would reach Moscow from Ukrain territory in 8 minutes), in December 2021 (15.12.2021) Putin first warned USA, EU and Ukraine to stop bombarding DNR/ LNR (so called people's republics), otherwise he said, he will resort to political and technical measures to rebuff the atrocities and aggressive schemes planning of NATO/ Kiev. Nobody heeded Putin's warning, and on 24.02.2022 he started the war. He took over 2 provincess of Ukraine. Last Sunday 17 March there were presidential ellections in Russia. And nowhere in Russia there was such turnout as in former Ukrainian provinces. And what's more: Above 90'% of votes were cast for Putin, kind of approving him to fight stronger and more resolutely Ukraine, as ruled by Zelenskey. Trump says that he will stop the war in 24 hours by plugging dolar flow to Ukraine/ Zelenskey...

US in total gave around 75 billion so far if I'm not mistaken which is not only military aid so Zelensky isn't walking away with a ton of money each time so Trump is speaking nosense again like when he said he would magically stop the war but I see the point he is trying to make as in USA first.
The interesting thing about it is that out of the 75 billion there is little outgoing revenue. Of the 75 billion vast majority goes back into the US and some is lost due to resources and fuel, etc. Europe itself is way ahead in giving aid to Ukraine when looking at it money wise but it is true US is in the lead when talking about strictly military aid which is probably due to USA being a big weapon manufacturer compared to Europeans.
You mean to tell me the Abrams tanks and HIMARS that were bombed into oblivion, missiles, artillery, and other consumable weapons go back to the US, like what? 😂 AFAIK, the money sent was also used to fund the Ukrainian government. Without it, the Ukrainian government will fail. How do those consumables go back to the US in the majority, really?
