You won't believe the end result... Extreme Restoration of Seiko Divers Watch

  • I bought this Seiko Scuba Mid-Size Drivers Watch (aka Lady Divers Watch) on eBay for USD 45 as a defective watch. Although it did not look promising, I bought it to challenge myself.
Would I be able to completely restore such a defective and neglected item?
The watch itself is fitted with a caliber 4205A movement. I was lucky that I already had some spare parts for this movement. And some parts like bezel insert, dial, glass, strap etc. can be ordered. They are available as original Seiko or aftermarket parts. I did not manage to get a new mainspring, so I used the old one.
The movement was so contaminated and rusty that I first cleaned it in the Ultrasonic Machine for 45 minutes. Then I cleaned it again in the Watch Movement Cleaning Machine for another hour.
This project took two months of planning, shooting, organizing spare parts. It was a true challenge, in particular restoring the heavily used case by hand.
If you like the video, please let me know, then I will do similar ones in the future. Thank you!
Hope you enjoy the video 😊

That is quite a transformation, well done! I'm curious about the age of this piece, and the movement - the bezel turns in both directions so it's a "skin-diver" rather than a full diver as we know them today? But the movement, so tiny. Why would Seiko use something so small?
    It's definitely a unique piece.

Thank you for your comment and the support! I was very happy with how it turned out.
Unfortunately I was unable to find any information on the watch, so I do not know the age of the watch or its history. If anybody does know, please let me know as I would be curious myself!

Smaller than case diameter movements were used on many dive watches or field watches in the past as well. The theory is that; if any water seeps through any of the ingress areas (case back to case, crown to case, crystal to case) it will not immediately seep into the movement as it has to traverse a distance from the seepage point to the movement. The theory applies, of course, to extremely small amounts of moisture and not overwhelming catastrophic failures in the seals. Omega used a small rectangular movement in their early manual wind robust watches for that reason.
Something many watch owners do not realize is the affect of putting a just worn watch (body temperature) onto a cold surface. This causes the air pressure within the case to reduce and cause a vacuum. This vacuum will suck any condensation or moisture from around the seepage points (see above) into the movement and especially the crown interface. The crown is the most prone leakage point due to the excessive winding and setting wear to the crown/stem/case gasket system.

@@MagicWatchmaking Based on the serial number on the case and movement it was made in either February 1981 or February 1991. My guess is 1981 for that model.

You are in reality - a True Craftsman.
I have just had a thirty year+ old divers watch restored, so I was very interested in what that involved from the technical perspective.
I now have a truly redefined appreciation of what an horologist in reality achieves and the amount of care and work which that involves.
Absolute pleasure to watch your video and to be re-educated, even at my age -73
Thank you and I wish you only good things.

Probably because, other than no narration, this is an exact replica presentation as Wristwatch Revival.

I own this very watch and would love to have it restored. It cast me $300 in 1980 and is still the best watch I have ever owned. I even dived with it and can testify that it works at 150 ft under water .
