I’ve just bought some food dyes intending to do some Shou Sugi Ban work/trials, but I will probably try this firstly. Nice video ! 👍
[Great Video!!] I have a wooden box I painted back in the mid 80's, with just food coloring and maybe a little water. I don't think I used vinegar and I know I didn't use bleach. The red and orange still look pretty vibrant and the blue is still dark--and never polyurethaned. They were never displayed in the sun, but only look a little faded from how they appeared when I painted them some 35 years ago...!
Good information, thanks. The bleach wasn't used with the colorings though. Just to see what it would do to the wood too :)

Would be interesting to cut one in half to see how deep the dye went into the wood.
That would be interesting and potentially open up some other possibilities with projects. I'll keep that in mind for a possible future video. Thank you
Maybe try sanding it first so it absorbs the dye bettee. Just an idea.
It probably would really help, but also add in another variable to test which I wabt to try and keep variables as limited as possible. Thanks for the comment :)

I sanded before bleach and it was good , Now wondering if I can food color stain over the bleached wood

Funny enough I've had good luck in the past with using inks diluted.
For wood dying? What types, if you don't mind me asking?
This is very similar to how Heather gems are made. The main difference being that the dye is heated and the process is done in a vaccume chamber to ensure the Heather is dyed completely through.
I have a feeling you'd really enjoy trying to make some gems at some point. If you don't have a bench polisher and jewlers rouge, I'd be more than happy to do the final polishing.

I appreciate the offer but I actually should have both of those to be set up when I get moved again. I bought a bunch of tool off of someone including a bench grinder and a bunch of polishing wheels for it :]

How It's Made did a great segment on them. You can find it on their CZcams channel. Fair warning, the audio will make your ears want to jump ship.

How it's made was a good show, used to watch it when I had satellite.
Watched his video and realized I had seen it before. But rewatched it again anyways becuase I enjoy his content.
It didn't turn out bad by anymeans even if it might not look exactly like the true gems.
One thing about Peter that kills me is how much material he waste making oversized castings to shabe down. That would kill my wallet and my soul XD

Always bet 6 or 7 or 8 with two dice lol out of 1-12 it has the most combination of number to equal 6, 7 or 8.. example 3+4/1+6/2+5 lol.. or 4+4/6+2/5+3. Or 3+3/4+2/5+1

I am living in Malaysia.
I want to make a (something of a) cutting board table top island.
I am thinking of adding dye, and coffee ), and wood stains and other things for color to some to some cheap 1 by 2's on the on the long end of the green (not the wide end) but the 1" end.
Then, I will glue them altogether - hopefully they will be straight! - and sand them down only to a degree that is necessary, hoping the stain will not be removed.
Question :
What to use?
Water based or oil based to get it as deep as possible, knowing i will HAVE to sand it down.
What stain or dye or whatever can penetrate enough that I can sand (a little) and still keep the color?
Anything I can do to make it absorb deeper? It's HOT here in Malaysia (34°C/93° F) and I assume this will help.
Should/could I heat the wood?
After that I want to put in some - I think, based on what I've read - mineral oil, then top it off with bees wax.
Any thoughts?
My biggest question is, could you restain after sanding? Or are you planning on having a mix of colors instead of having something uniform?

Each individual piece would be 15" inches long and stained/dyed with a variety of colors.
A real smorgasbord. The problem - of course - is that when finishing the dyes, or stains or perhaps you recommend different, then I glue them all together, and this large montage of colors would then be sanded only as much as necessary (to make flat, remove obvious highs).
So, the first part - the staining part - could certainly be done in stages in ANY way possible to maximise the seeping as deep as possible, so that when sanding, assuming the worse, I need to remove more than I expected.
@mohammadabdullah6707 , it would seem to me if possible it would be best to glue all the pieces together first, then sand smooth. Then stain everything and seal. You said this is for a cutting board/Island? Is this going to be used for direct food prep?
Are you are trying to have each board a different color or just different colors across the whole surface?

I tried the latter.
I did a sample piece with different types of stains/dyes on each piece of wood.
When I sanded the whole the glue-up peice, the sanding removed almost all of the stain.
I tried the following :
- Pen ink
- 3 parts thinner to one part shellac
- Turmeric
- Coffee
@mohammadabdullah6707 , maybe what you could do is clamp all the boards together before staining on a flat surface and sand them smooth first.
Then stain and clamp and glue them in the same order with the stain side on the flat surface so that way if there are any ridges it'll be on the back side, which can be sanded smooth without destroying the stained top?
If you plan on prepping food directly on this surface though, I would only suggest food safe stains and finishes be used.
