    I remember when I was flatrate at a dealer, I spent 80% of the time covering my ass typing on a computer and 20% actually working on a car.

    The RV business I work for just switched us to flat rate. I was an HVAC installer prior and I was told I would be trained with this new RV business I'm trying. we were told by the temp service that there are limited RV technicians so the company decided to bring in plumbers, electricians, HVAC workers, auto mechanics because we have mechanical abilities and can learn. One year into it they decided to go to flat rate and we're all still just learning. not only do we do light mechanical work like oil changes and brakes or bearings but we also take care of Peel and sealing the roof or putting on a new roof and interior work with plumbing or fixing a cabinet and so on. you get so much time to do the job and then you ask permission if you think you're going to go over. warrantee doesn't always wanna pay more even though let's say you have just a design that's really crappy in a shower. or the substitute a different type of fridge for the refrigerator you're taking out. these are some things that I ran into that really screwed me on a flat rate. pretty much if somethings a crappy design you're going to swallow and be punished for it. example I had a crappy designed shower I mean these things are built cheap as crap and the dang thing wouldn't stop leaking no matter how much silicone I shoved anywhere LOL it ends up looking like shit and you're way over your time. The design of the door rails were really crappy and didn't have any kind of seal to prevent water from coming out so I was forced to silicone the shit out of everything. dude it took me like two days to get that bitch to stop leaking and my coworker wouldn't fight for more time so if they don't fight you don't get. I pretty much said don't give me anything that's crappy design because I'm gonna tell you know I'm not doing it but then what happens there you'll get fired LOL it's designed to force you out the door is what it is

    Main tech would sit around waiting on headgasket jobs, sometimes up to 3 hours, it was way better to install new engines/used than trying to fix them, he left to and went to tesla

    Flat rate is fine at 50% of shop rate (like it was in the 80s) and will be again or you will have no one, there is no tech shortage now compared to what it will be in 1 or 2 years!

    Well flat rate you can get more money when it’s busy and you being quick doing the job but when there is no work you don’t get paid. Wouldn’t it just even it out if you were hourly?

    I really think flat rate is bad for customers, I just can't see how the quality of work won't dip. But I have never been on flat rate so I can't speak from experience. Great video man is it cool if I give you a shout out ?

      As for flat rate, I'm not on it either however I am tracking my hours as if I were and I definitely have some more to learn.

    Nah as an hourly dude that’s not true. At a fleet shop I never clean or find something to do when there are no cars. Maybe a kid who just started at a dealer will do that but not a grown ass man like me. I will just sit on my chair and wait for a car. I won’t slave away regardless of my pay plan

    You feel like your gonna be a lot more sharper on your toes while you work @ flat rate? I feel like being hourly gives you room for mistakes. One of the hardest things is going from a flat rate pay style back to being an hourly, I feel like even with flat rate you can always be doing something that will make YOU money.. Thats when you work on perfecting you're side hustles. Sweeping the shop kills brain cells ;P

    • @CaptainRon1
      @CaptainRon1  Před 5 lety

      @@CaptainRon1 Right!! if you wanna push dirt for hours a day you can go do construction, this is America! a car fixer upper shouldn't be spending time on domestic duties of the shop.

      Yota Doug's Tool Collecting Channel push dirt for hours a day do construction? You mean excavation? ( $35 to 65hr as a machine operator) ....Construction builders and framers don’t push dirt ...it takes years to learn our trade and mid level guys make 50k and Forman and supervisors make 1k a day...side work will bring in 2-3k a day.....

    another example of getting screwed. i'm supposed to replace the refrigerator that someone else diagnosed. it's a warranty item and I was given a different type of refrigerator because for some reason they're not able to get the identical refrigerator. first of all you're not just gonna take that refrigerator out and shove it through the door you're gonna find out let's see what I ran into it's too big to get through the door. now you're wasting time removing doors that you weren't given any time for. finally get the thing out the door and realize the new refrigerator has different brackets that need to be customized or it's gonna look like shit. we're supposed to mount it different now and then in the end we ended up having to do extra work to the woodwork to make it pretty. I got 15% on that one because it was my fault apparently that we had to do all this extra work LOL they don't give a shit and you're going to eat that.
