- For this episode of Jason's All Time Favorite RC Products we head back to the mid 1980's for the original Associated RC10.
A little history of the RC10...
Roger Curtis's 1984 design of a serious 1:10-scale electric offroad car not only led to explosive growth within the company, but within the world of R/C racing as well. This new vehicle was the now-famous Associated RC10 buggy. Built on a 6061 aircraft alloy chassis, the new car was, unlike its Japanese counterparts of the time, a serious offroad racing machine. Another 1-2-3 IFMAR sweep would follow in 1985 at the first IFMAR 1:10 Electric Off-Road World Championship. The RC10, possibly more than any R/C vehicle before or since, is credited with making the single biggest impact on radio control racing. The success of the RC10 forced Associated to move to a larger facility, which they found in Costa Mesa in 1987.
That same year, former Yamaha technician and professional R/C racer Cliff Lett joined Associated to head the research and development department. This department, consisting of Lett, Roger Curtis and Husting's son, Curtis, were responsible for the RC10 cars that won the IFMAR World Championships in 1989 in Australia, and in 1991 in Detroit. The success of the RC10 coupled with other cars of the time, namely the RC12LW, the RC10L, RC10LSS and the RC10T kept production going for five years and prompted the necessity of extending their building in Costa Mesa.
Gene Husting helped develop cars for Associated until 2000, when he retired. He is responsible for the lineup up to the RC10B3, RC10T3, TC3 and GT RTRs. Five years after his retirement, the company introduced an entirely new line of offroad racers with the introduction the 1:18 scale electric RC18T and RC18MT miniature trucks. In 2006, with 27 IFMAR victories in all, Team Associated is the world's "winningest" RC car manufacturer. Reedy motors, a division of Associated, has powered 28 IFMAR World Champions.
R&D manager and world-class driver Cliff Lett broke the RC land speed record of more than 111 mph (179 km/h) with a heavily modified Associated RC10L3 touring car at Irwindale Speedway on January 13, 2001.
A modified RC10 with an off-the-shelf Parma International 1963 Chevrolet Corvette body was used in the famous chase scene in the 1988 motion picture, The Dead Pool. In it, Clint Eastwood as Dirty Harry is being pursued through the streets of San Francisco, California by a highly explosive bomb disguised as an RC car. The "bomb" was actually driven by IFMAR world-champion race driver Jay Halsey. The car was in fact an electric; the sounds of a nitro-powered engine were added in post-production. - Sport
My first RC10 was converted every week to keep up with our track operator. I raced on a shoestring and every week they changed from off road, to dirt oval, to paved road course, to paved oval. Due to aftermarket support for the RC10, I was able to run the same chassis in each type of track. I was even able to be competitive with the sponsored local guys. I still have that car.
Thank you for sharing that! Similar happened to me in the late 80s and 90s when rc 10 conversions for everything from dirt oval to carpet tracks was common. I ran mine in the dirt in the summer and slammed it down and put foams on it and ran it indoor on carpet during the winter...those were the days...funny how modern 10th scale buggies are ran on a cross of carpet and off road with jumps today. Such a versatile chassis!
When I was a kid in southern California, about 1984 or 1985 my dad would have my car set up for dirt off road for Friday night and Saturday night he would have every thing switched over ( body, tires, gears, and suspension ) for paved banked oval racing at the Velodrome. The RC-10 was such a good platform for any kind of racing!
@@shawnsmith8775 I think back then there were far more on-road race tracks than dirt off-road tracks. The dirt tracks require a lot of logistics and maintenance. The irony was that off-road buggies were so much more common and popular. So many owners of off-road buggies just ended up racing them on on-road tracks.
@@brandonbentley8532 I remember reading about the early RC Monster Truck pulling competitions. 90% of the pulling monster trucks were converted RC10s!
Excellent stuff. They really should never discontinue the RC10. Such an iconic vehicle. There will always be a market for it.
The Stealth gearbox was SO GOOD compared to anything else at the time !!
Still have my gold chassis rc10, 35 year's and still awsome.
wish I still had mine... Won my first race with the box stock RC10, from that point I was hooked for life

@@Joe_Sa_3rd Hey me too! I learned it was all about getting the car hooked up to the track and learning how to get a good line on a turn, or reverse break the wheels to control the angle you land from a jump. With a mechanical speed control and a no label reedy motor. The motor was a gift from one of the track guys as kind of a welcome to the hobby kind of thing. I found out today my dad threw it away (he kept the box for other things!) tossed the car, modified to be a real beast, a couple months back. I figured it would be safe in his garage forever.
Me too, got mine in 1984 so 37 years i guess. Still play with it. Take it out and play with it!
The RC10 is my favorite of all time. I got one in spring of 1986 and I still have it... and a couple more.
It is a true love affair with the rc10, the times we spent racing them, and the people we raced with.
What great memories. Wish I was 15 years old again
We need another run of those honeycomb motor plates!
I still have my Tamiya Rough Rider RC card from 1980/1981. The Rough Rider, Sand Scorcher,F150 and the COX scorpion were the true origins of the 1/10 Off-Road car scene. Without those cars the R10 would not exist. That being said the RC10 revolutionized the 1/10 scale off-road racing world.
I still have my RC10 and both my dads. Love them and will never let them go. Too many great memories tied to them. My dad and I used to race them against eachother.
My dad and I used to race then also. Those were the days. Unfortunately, he sold them after the track by us shut down. I wish he hadn't. He had the gold tub, I had the Team Car.
some are lucky to have A dad but you have two, shiiit
Of all the RC's I've had over the years the RC10 is the one I never let go of. It's the soul of RC
Yes It is 👍
Gold Pan. Hand built the optional front and rear sway bars with a torch and solder.
My engineer father thought I bought an overpriced toy. When he helped me build it, he was quite impressed.
This is a great piece of history Jason! I was 10 when the RC10 came out. I always wanted an RC10 and a Javelin back then but only had inexpensive RC cars like a World Engines Rockbuster and some others. Fast forward and now I’m almost 50 and I’ve now built a Javelin and just got in on the 40th Anniversary Gold Pan kit and it’s really exciting
At about 11 or 12 years old I'd go into the local Hobby Store and stare at the high-end RC Buggies on display. I specifically remember the Tamiya Fox and Team Associated RC10. I remember the excitement I felt looking at those machines. I also remember my dad saying: "Well son, that there isn't really a toy" because they weren't cheap. Later that Christmas I received a Tyco Aerohopper lol. I loved my Areohopper, but I broke it on day 1 and cried myself to sleep. A broken Aerohopper taught be how to get creative in fixing things. From that point forward though, it would be real rc vehicles only. I bought a used Tamiya Blackfoot from a neighbor and later my older brother sent me a used RC10 goldpan in the mail. RC cars were a huge part of my childhood and early teen years...and I don't regret it for a minute!
wow! That was a trip down memory lane..... I owned the Graphite Edition back in the day and end up winning Portuguese regional and some Nationals races with that car. Made me proud to see the Portuguese flag on the Kindwal edition Box!! Thanks for the amazing video, cheers
I loved dyeing the rims of my RC car a lime green and the arms, The Blue anodized shocks were awesome.
This was my 1st RC car when i was 12 yrs old and I loved it. I now have a 2WD proline pro-mt and i'm realizing watching this why i like my pro-mt so much. It's a carbon copy of this car with bigger tires on it.
Those drag cars in the back ground are 🔥
I’ve been an RC enthusiast since 1984 and it was the beloved Gold Pan Team Associated RC10 that ignited the RC fire that still burns in me! 👍🏼
Most iconic RC car of all time.
I was 14 in 1984 when I got mine here In Irving Texas at Wild Bills RC. Six months later I added the first gen orange Novak speed controller with heat sink...thanks to my loving mother.
Great video. The RC hobby is a wonderful avenue for creativity and understanding mechanics, physics, and vehicle dynamics. The RC10 is the car that really considered those principles as part of it's design. As a young teen in 1990, Lett's nats winner was my idea of the pinnacle of 2wd buggies. I still have my early Championship Edition that was meticulously built to replicate his car that was featured in RCCA to as exact details as young man of 13/14 possibly could. I still have the magazine too! While the car has seen better days, and a few parts replaced from it's closest replication of his car due to failure, I'm happy to say it's still operational to this day. Long live the RC10!
So awesome to see this. I used to build these when I was young. I had the rc10t, and a team losi xxt. I used to chase cars down the street with them lol
I still have mine from the early 90s back then it had a team pit stop trans. I won a lot of races with that car!
Woohoo!
Love my RC10-T2........still running great, now with head-tracking FPV!
Way to go Jason, you're a true RC historian!
That was my first RC as a young teen. Paid $210 for it at a small local hobby shop. I built it myself and loved it and wish I had kept it.
Kunio Dudgeon was my hero back in the day. The nitro conversion for the rc10t was brilliant. I used it for a long time. Also did a "diesel" conversion. Cool but never really ran well
Started with a Super Champ, then went to an RC10, loved it.
Excellent discussion! With the release of the 40th anniversary edition in 2024 this video is an excellent refresher of one of the greatest rc buggies ever. I ordered one and can’t wait to get it. The RC10 is etched in most peoples memories and is very nostalgic for us older kids. I raced a Losi LXT way back when and regret never getting an original RC10.
I had a stealth gold pan. One of the most influential RC cars I ever owned. Taught me so much about mechanics. Great video!
R.I.P. Brian Kenwald
The stealth was a black anodized pan. I have it today. You had to drill holes to use the stealth transmission on a gold pan.
There was a stealth gold pan championship edition
Some years ago, I was finally able to get my hands on an all original gold-tub RC10. Fully stock, first generation, with mechanical speed control. I didn't get the box, but I did get the manual with it.
Nice find man! I remember those mechanical I speed controls.
I wqas 16. I had a part time job for savoing cash. We had two dirt tracks in the city, and the indoor wearhouse held some reedy preliminaries, and where I raced. I took my gold pan RC10 my dad bot me for xmas, bog standard, installed graphite suspension attachments, titanium arms, new linkages, new diff, one of the best stock motors at the time that tried to skirt the rules by making the bushing contact with rotor smaller for less friction. I reduced the weight by machining the pan a bit after watching what some of the more competitive racers were doing (my 30w iron sucked, so was making friends borrowing soldering irons). Before I did that, I ran all stock except for softer front tires and square fuzzy rear tires, and a reedy stock motor I got at a competition. Replaced the mech speed control with I don't remember the brand, but a mid tech high freq. speed control, and high speed freq was the new thing) and a fast front servo that cost some tie to save for. Still used the analog remote from futba, everyone was on digital. A pro racer wanted to check it out, and told me "dude, your car is the most hooked up I've ever tried at this track, good job dude". I remember winning the night's race and being really proud.
I'm rockin the graphite version, original box and all! Shes a dinosaur, controlling with a twin stick attack 3 by futaba. Old school! Great vid thx!

Awesome video! Still my favorite RC. I did mange to pick up a re-release and I have the original as well. Thanks for the video. Good stuff!
With the mechanical speed controller?
thanks for all the memories!! had the Gold tub , then went to the flat graphite chassis with the stealth gearbox. Loved TA!! even stayed with TA when I went to carpet with the RC10L and Super Speedway car too! RC10T truck & Reedy motors all the way. back in the day when Brushed motors were the way. Team Associated always and forever!!
Loving the old stuff. My dad raced a heck of a lot in the 80s-90s my dad still had one of his RC10 trophy trucks when we started again and he raced the heck out of it, it held up, until he got the idea of throwing a Castle Industries Mamba in it.... He got speed, and a broken transmission 😂
I was an 80’s kid and my first car was a Tamiya Hornet. I built it, painted it and had fun with it. My best friend soon after got a gold pan RC-10 and blew my Hornet off the street. I was insanely jealous of it. I hated and loved that car. I feel like one of these days I’ll have to get one just to bury the hatchet.
Great video great memories! I still have my RC10 gold pan and TQ10 graphite from the 80's. Awesome cars I had so much fun tweaking them and racing. Reworking the transmission soooo smooth. Raced off road and oval track configs and bodies. 😎
I really enjoyed this video. I love history in general and when it comes to my love for RC, history and passion go hand in hand. The 4WD conversion was pure genius
Who remembers the MIP cable 4 wheel drive conversion kit for the RC10
Points finger at himself. I still have the RC Car Action magazines from then. I remember it all vividly!
I have one + The first RC10 Team Car release :)
Yes that is unobtainable today and was stupid rare back then unless you were pro. Same with the graphite rc10 and the earliest gold pans with the antiroll bars in kit.

I wish I could count how many of these I've given away. Good rig. I think I still have a b4 around waiting to be chopped up into a no prep dragster, ha.
I had one of those when I was a kid I loved it. Thanks for this it brings me back to my childhood.
The original Rc10 golden era of rc cars.
I loved my RC10. I remember drilling holes in the gold pan to make the car lighter then replaced it with a Kevlar chassis.
Raced that car at Radio Control Raceway in Costa Mesa CA through the 80's. Good times!
This is a fantastic series.
The RC10gt was my first kit RC, I loved that truck, it has always been my favorite RC car I have owned. I was 18 when I picked it up in 98, model 7066, OS engine, and it had a Ton Paris custom pipe.
I have 13 team AE cars and trucks. All started in 1984 with the RC10 , when i was 7 my dad bought me and my brother one. Love your products JConcepts!! I have your wheels , tires, bodies and a few other parts..
Brings back such incredible great memories and that craving that began my RC ADDICTION!! I actually was watching a video just recently of you Jason speaking to Gene at a race He of course had his camera in your face. Lol
That was the hot car when I got interested in RC, always wanted one but never got one. I have an RC18 which is the closest I got. Thanks for the memorries
YES BRING IT BACK WITH THE NEW CONCEPTS AS OF TODAY
Great nostalgia! Bravo!
Quite simply one of my favorite CZcams videos of all time! Awesome! For me, Jason Ruona is the Pope of RC!!!
my dad won the British champion in 83, 84 with his RC10 in Chesterfield U.K while I was racing the ruffrider , good old days.👍
Best car ever... still have a new one in box from house of hobbies in clearwater.... seeing yours open helps me keep mine sealed......also during this quar time almost built it..lol
Not sure Ive got that kind of willpower lol
I had one of those when in its early years. it was an awsome care to have and changed the game with the aluminum tub chassis.
My all time favorite also. Best buggy ever made.
This was really interesting. Thanks!
I had a Tamyia Fox, but one of my friends got the 10 when all us in the neighborhood got hobby grade RC'S back in 86 or 87. Those were the days.
I had my rc10 championship edition customized, I had my father paint my chassis, nose plate and motor plate 95' Toyota Tacoma purple 🟣 😅 ( Nummi plant in Fremont CA). Brings back a ton of great memories!
Still have 3 of them from racing back in the day. 1 off road, 1 carpet and one in the box that was originally meant for parts. All 'A' pans
Twas actually my first kit ... Took many beatings!!! Had a wiper speed controller!!
Loving this one thanks for sharing very important information giving thanks blessed love to all knowledge is power hopefully everyone pays attention keep up the good work 🙏🙏🙏🇯🇲🇯🇲🇯🇲💪💪💪
I wish I can rewind the world and go back when I first got that gold pan growing up.
Nights at the track were like heaven for a special kind of person, and I got along famously with everyone. Rocked the gold pan well into the years of the RC10 B2.
@@thej3799 yes sir. RCH costa mesa ca. Where i started, So/cal raceway pretty much the boot camp lol in the 90s.
Larry Larson's car in the back ground. nice touch. RC10s were great, but I loved my JrX2 in the day!
thank you, my first was a tq10, then a rc10 team car.
back in late 80s early 90s I used to race with these rc10,, I personally went with the losi jrx.. both great cars :)
Excellent series. Keep them up.
i wasn't lucky enough to afford one of these as a kid as they were super expensive compared to most Tamiya at the time. i had a Hornet and Lunchbox. i still do they are completely disassembled due to broken parts.
i have have the same story.I couldnt afford the car.
Yup, I could not afford a RC10. Had to settle for a Tamiya Grasshopper.
I started as a hardcore Losi guy (at least for OffRoad) with a JRx2 that gold pan RC10 was my nemesis later working at a hobby shop I sure did sell a lot of those different variations of RC10. Maybe because I was running always running something Team Associated for OnRoad so all these years later when I got back into OffRoad instead of the newest Losi offering I picked up a B6D and am recently finished a B6.1 for carpet that ready whenever we can get back to normal racing
This video was awesome! I just bought a Rc10 B2. Never had one so at 40 I decided I wanted it. I just started working on my Rc10GT that I bought in 2005. I absolutely love Team Associated!! I hope to get down to Motorama this year to watch what they have but I think I'll be in Hawaii
Thanks for the great flashback.
After racing my Tamiya frog I moved into the original RC-10. I ran them for many years in off-road and oval racing.
When they started with the ugly cab forward spaceship looking bodies it turned me off to them and I haven't owned one since.
If they came out with a realistic rear cab body again I'd buy one.
I like my stuff to look as real as possible. Lol
Thanks again for the great video 👍
They need to bring this back,,, just as it was back in the day
Im restoring two late B1’s ive had since new. Thanks to JC for making high performance stuff for them. Gonna rip with these Bar Code V1’s!
The track where the '85 IFMAR was held, Family Hobbies in Vineland NJ, recently closed.
The team associated rc10 was my second car that I ever got when I was a kid. My first one was a Kyosho javelin. The javelin has still been my favorite but I still have one of each then I totally tricked out and then when I kept the original and a shelf Queen. The rc10 that I still play with has the UNL trailing arm conversion with 64 pitch gears in the transmission along with titanium screws ball in and everything else I could put on there titanium. RPM arms I even had titanium universal joints. I really like that car. I wish Team Associated came out with a four-wheel drive a lot earlier. I have one of the newer javelins they came out and it is updated for 48 pitch gears and newer screws. I love it and brings me back to when I was a kid. I still play with both of them
I wonder how competitive these would be today. I know the drive train wouldn't be as reliable with brushless power, but I think the suspension was so good it still might hold up today.
@@ctsd623 I actually heard of some of the pros using one of the older cars like this and they were still coming in third or fourth. When they put that to the test and the drivetrain can take a brushless drive if you use metal gears.I have the 64 pitch gear conversion for the stealth and it handles anything I can throw at it. And the old one was 32 pitch It can handle quite a bit. I had an associated B3 and put in one of the newer brushed motors and laid down all the teeth in the transmission. But I upgraded with metal gears all the way through and nothing will flip over backwards like you wouldn't believe but it won't hurt the gearbox
Also thankful that JConcepts makes the bodys for Vintage AE Rc’s.
Thanks a lot Jason for this great overview of our favorite model! It is such a chance to get to know better the (Hi)story the RC10 from one of the guys who wrote it ! 🙏
Awesome history lesson!
If there was an RC10 re-release available I'd buy it today. Looks like I'm going to settle for a Kyosho re-release.
They made a re-release in 2017.
Never had an rc10 but still have my RC10T and RC10GT.
Wow awesome video!
Brings back some memories!
Great video! First car was the Worlds car, then to the trucks, RC10T, T2. Stopped racing right around the T3’s launch. Now collects and have many RC10’s. Shout out to MnM hobbies in Corona CA!
That '65 Chevy drag truck in the background!!
Look at that amazing box art. I prefer the original RC 10 over anything now. Sad I sold mine in the 90s.
Nice collection of Vintage buggies 😎😎😎😎😎
I still have my “A” pan and a couple 10t’s. One of the best platforms ever!
Hey that's the car I started with. That gold one.
Mine is the Team Associated RC10T love it more then my CC-01 Rustler 4x4 VXL and Tmaxx 3.3. I love all but the RC10T is what started my hobby.
Nice history lesson
I wish that the:
-big front bumper,
-three-piece wheels, and
-gear cover
from the classic RC10 were still included with the modern B6 variations.
A sad lifelong tamiya fan I did admire this car. I saw an ad for it in a magazine. That classic mud spattered shot. It was crazy expensive in Australia. Couldn’t get past all the stuff you didn’t get with the kit.
I have one of jamming Jay's cars , he built it for his son . Has his tires and painted black rims off one of his racers
I remember when the JRX2 was in production, Team Losi made a dozen hop-up accessories for the original RC10. I thought it was strange that Team Losi made upgrades for their competitor.
The speed control servo sat back inside that area under the rear shock tower and moved the wiper that slid across the green ceramic wire wound variable resistor. They would get really hot if you loaded down the motor too much.
I still have a graphite car, I went through the aluminum chassis rapidly... Lol... One good wall shot and ......bent.. at one time I had 4 buggy's, 2 electric trucks and a GT. Great times in the hobby...
Wish Associated would rerelease the original rc10 again.
i agree, now that the kids back then that couldn't afford it, we all grow up and got real jobs and now we can afford it lol
Yep. It’s the one that got away and I’d like another shot at it.
Thay have
They did a few years back. They got bought up quick but if you keep your eye out on ebay they pop up time to time...
I remeber back in the day (I would've been 13yrs old) unmodded rc10 look vintage yet ones modded for race looked super modern .
New sub great channel ill be watching im defo getting my first rc car after this carona goes plz god it goes for good
I had one of the old RC10 (the box on the top right). I rememeber upgrading to the Stealth Transmission in it. I was running a Futuba Radio and Novak Speed controller. I'm currently 42 and had this as a kid.
