    Quick Question for everyone: If I was to do a season in NR2003, would folks want a full race unedited, or maybe cut out chunks under caution/lapping by myself?

    • @gr0bbelaar
      @gr0bbelaar Před 3 lety +14

      Cut out the cautions and stuff if nothing happens. A 1988 season would be so cool, loved this mod way back when.

    • @ThePoison38
      @ThePoison38 Před 3 lety

      I’m probably alone in this but I vote leaving the entire race in minus maybe the cautions if you did cut stuff out. A more viewer friendly approach would probably be to cut out the laps by yourself. I’ll watch either way!

      Riverside was awesome to watch, completely open terrain. After the last race a mall was built where the southern portion of the track was located and houses on the north side. Apparently some admin. buildings still remain too.

      You guys can add California Speedway (1997-2023) to that too, just torn down this year. You can blame the urban sprawl and all the greedy developers.

      @@douglasdixon524 I stayed in the Ayres hotel there back in 2018, it’s located where turn 3 used to be. There’s a Winco across the street from it and a ton of fast food joints all over, the area is super sketch at night. Sad to know that’s it hallowed racing ground and so many greats raced there at one time and a few lost there lives.

    I went to my first F1 race at Long Beach in 1978. Don't know why we didn't go sooner, but I saw my first CART race at Riverside in 1980. For the next few years my dad and I would say that we'd want to go to Long Beach to see the cars, but then we'd see CART and IMSA at Riverside for the circuit. I've still never been to any track that had better general admission sightlines and access to them. You were so close. I'll never forget the first time I saw those Indycars come through turn 5 for the first time. Insane. Little I've seen has felt that fast since.

    While I was familiar with Foyt's crash in the 60's, that Dick Simon crash was crazy. Thanks for mentioning it. Another scary moment happened in the final Winston Cup race in 1988 when the car of Ruben Garcia lost control after exiting turn 9, broke down the corner of the Armco barrier that was protected by tires, crashed through the flimsy catch fence, and then smashed through a concrete wall (not much more than a cinder block wall). Nearly ended up in the laps of the spectators in the grandstand.

    The track creator(s) did an amazing job on this circuit. Though two racing line issues stood out to me: on corner exit for the slow first gear right hander after the esses, the AI loses a lot of speed by not using the full width of the track; same issue on the left hander onto the back straight. Would love to see em go a bit wider to make passing through those areas a bit tougher.
    Great vid as always, GPLaps! Your passion for realistic racing, and appreciation of older eras is infectious.

    12:20 I always figured I only thought the older cars were more memorable & stood out more cuz "I was being nostalgic" but I'm glad to hear others think the same thing. I think the sleekness & smoothness of newer cars may contribute but also the newer schemes seem to have too many paint lines going in too many different directions. To me the new schemes look messy & disorganized with lines going every which way. nascar is dead to me in the past 7-8yrs. The 80s,90s, & early 2000s were the golden age but those days are long gone. To think that designers from 80s look way better than anything made today is very weird & many factors must be in play for that to be the case but these schemes are & always have been ICONIC & beautiful.

    Total aside - Herbie Films - They shot some at Riverside, Some at the older Laguna Seca and Willow Springs (Jack Rabbits Raceway?) - did they shoot any scenes at Sears Point/Sonoma/Infineon - Guess they were more 60's sports car events the film crew could just rock up to and enter a spoof VW in close to Hollywood

  • @Villoresi

    Up through 1968, there was no Dogleg, and Turn 9 was a standard, semicircular, banked corner. Foyt realized he was having brake issues, and to avoid hitting the guy in front of him, he threw the car to the inside. There was a deep depression there, and then a big hump, and his car launched. Foyt survived, but it took months for him to recover.
    While Riverside (1957) may have hosted the widest range of major series, there were a number of good circuits in the West. You have/had Willow Springs (1953), Laguna Seca (1957), Westwood (1959), Seattle Int'l Raceway (1960), Stardust (1965), Sears Point (1968), and Portland (1971, for the layout we recognize now). And though not out by the Pacific, another classic that was relatively far west was Continental Divide Raceway (1959).
    Admittedly, NASCAR isn't so much my cup of tea. And yes, it's hard to say how interesting a lot of the oval races would be. If I'm looking at a preferred period, I probably liked the look of the cars most from 1982 and before. Of course, there's something special about the muscle cars, fastbacks, and high-winged beasts.

    Just one other bit of praise. It’s nice to see someone who loves sim racing but yet doesn’t have or need the latest and greatest in equipment like wheels/rigs etc. to fully enjoy the hobby. No $100,000 sim set up.

    Hoping some day someone picks up this era of Stock Car racing again to mod with modern standards. A early-mid-late 80s mod with variations of the Pontiac/Ford/Oldsmobile/Chevy chassis would really make NR2003 complete! Aero88 is still great for how old it is however, and this track is by far THE best track to illustrate that golden era of Stock Car racing.

    Still can’t believe they didn’t use Riverside a bit more for F1, I know it was one of the last times a Maserati 250F was used in Grand Prix circumstances and it being the early 60s must of looked like a monster with the tiny Lotus-Climax and Cooper-Climax coming to the fore.

    • @tomanderson6335
      @tomanderson6335 Před 3 lety +2

      The one and only USGP held there (the 1960 race) was a bust because the L.A. Herald Examiner was associated with it, and the much bigger L.A. Times, not wanting to undermine their own Times Grand Prix for sports cars at Riverside, did zero promotion/coverage. As a result pretty much the only people who knew about it outside of hardcore race fans were Herald Examiner readers.
      Riverside did, however, see use as an F1 testing venue in the late '70s and early '80s when the circus was in town to race at Long Beach. Rick Mears did one of his two tests for Brabham there, setting a faster time than Nelson Piquet.

    There was a bug where the AI would pit relatively earlier than you if you doubled (or tripled) the fuel usage (which you noted). Looks like that was the case here, with many pitting twice when they didn't have to. You would typically have to go into the track's config and alter the fuel use parameter to compensate.
    The max/min AI lines on the backstretch looked to be much narrower than the track given how many would lift if you were side-by-side with them.

The only caveat would be that it would be traditional NASCAR racing. Dirt, short track, high banked, and fun and enjoyable when you see it live and in person.

    When I try and load the track it says, “could not load track” I tried downloading the shared file on the website and it still didn’t work. How did you get this track to load?

      Did you unzip it correctly? When unzipped there should only be one folder called "Riverside Cup WKC" that contains the files for the track. If you have a folder inside of the unzipped folder that is named "Riverside Cup WKC" copy that folder into your tracks folder and go race..
