  • In this several days project I have fixed a Mercedes W220 with several Airmatic system issues. These include a leak in the Airmatic valve assembly, leak on top of one of the strut and fixing of the compressor to produce better compression for the system.
    I did a lot of research using Mercedes documents for the vehicle, which I have compiled into these videos.
    Since the repair, I have been running the vehicle for several months and the system has been performing well with no issues. The overall cost was minimal for all my fixes as I didn't just replace the components randomly. I hope these notes will help you fix any Airmatic related issues on your Mercedes.
    There are in total around 8 parts to the notes. Please allow some time for me to be able to share all the notes with you.

    Thank God I have a DAS machine. As a former MB tech, I wouldn't have patience or the time for the manual testing. With the DAS machine, I can test each wheel and valves individually and see the pressure in actual values while it's all together. Also if a solenoid failed in the distribution valve, you will get a trouble code in the Airmatic control unit.

    OK all of this is pretty straightforward on my S 500… 04 model year model I’m working on, I am more concerned about the inner workings of the valve body if they are like tapered valves that seat in and if all 4 are dropping that we can indicate it’s the main air supply valve seat that activates and either opens or makes a tight seal when it closes off with that much corrosion I wonder if you can shoot some lubricating oil or something into those valve areas to help them make a better seat and that oil would work back out of the chambers etc.

    Great videos on the W220 airmatic system.
    Questions, were the air fittings difficult to remove from the valve block? Did you consider any of the aftermarket brands as suitable replacements vs. the Mercedes brand? There's a huge difference in price.

    Good video.
    Can i please ask you do you know what is operating pressure of the sistem it self?
    I want to check valve assembly with corect pressure or air supplied to it.
    Using pressure gauges to check if there is any leak back in valve assembly over lets say 48h.
    As far as i understand it,ones valve has let pressure out to strut.it closes up and keeps pressure in the line?or am i wrong?
    This is to test the part off the car, compressor it self builds up over 4 bars of pressure very quickly and fills up my 4 bar gauge and goes over it.
    Compressor it self build up good pressure in to dead end gauge,but after few min pressure in gauge starts droping down? i assume compressor it self is not ment to be under pressure all the time? air feed valve in valve body keeps pressure up and if it needs more in will open the valve and let compressor build pressue up?
    Hope you can help me make sense if testing it.
    Thanks

    Something important with those cars: if you have problems with the pneumatic suspensión system (any problem), do not use too much the car, as the compressor will work in excess and it can break (at that moment, you are adding a second problem to your initial problem: a broken compressor).

    Where could be the problem on my car if whole car lowers in 2-3 hours, on all 4 wheels ? It can't be on struts right ? IF only one strut leaked then i could see only that part low, is that correct? Also if this valve assembly is leaking only on one line, then only that side will be lower ?

      It depends . .. . . . for example, I have a 09 CLS550 (US) and the ValveControlBlock is located above the compressor on the DriversSide between the front bumper & front left tire (US), in the UK that would be the passenger side between the front bumper & front left tire.

I want to manually activate the pump as well as both front left and front right solenoids that way the front end will rise to a desired level. Very good series of videos. I wonder if you might have missed something in your analysis of the problem you had. You mention the split intake hose was allowing dirty and wet air through. I don't think the filter is capable of drying the air on intake however. I am wondering if you had leaky struts, which would then cause the compressor to run much more than designed, which in turn would cause it to heat up. Warm compressor would lead to condensation in the compressed air, and I assume there is no mechanism to clear water from airmatic, it's a closed system?. Just my thoughts, once again, thanks for the videos.

    • @biddermon
      @biddermon Před 2 lety

      It is my understanding that the intake hose on the compressor has a filter that's filled with desiccant pellets, which removes the moisture from the incoming air.

    • @brazzknuckzz1619
      @brazzknuckzz1619 Před 6 měsíci

      Nahh the air dryers not in the hose, the inline filter is also a fluid filter (or same design at least) but on the compressor itself, theres the 2 cylinder shapes that run parallel to eachother, sitting sideways, or horizontally. The bigger, metal one on the top, is the electric motor that spins the piston, and the smaller plastic one on the bottom is the air dryer. Filled with a bunch of dessicant beads, pretty much silica beads. You can easily take it apart and replace the beads if you live in a more humid area. Ive seen others who replaced them and they were SOAKED. But the system works by pulling air thru the filter, and then thru the air dyer. when it releases the air, it blows back thru the dryer to help dry it out, and thru the filter to help clean it out as well.

I purchased a metal housing unit 6 months ago which I'm returning because the left rear would stay stuck open, and the air bag would just fill over a few miles till the car was leaning really bad. I would climb in the back seat and slowly let the air out til it sat level, but would fill up in a short period of time. I'll keep you posted.

      if the block is aluminum or pot metal, alcohol should probably not be advised as the reaction of aluminum and ethanol forms aluminum triethoxide, which decomposes into aluminum hydroxide and ethanol in the presence of any moisture2@@WaqasAhmed-kj8ue

    Thanks for explaining this so well.
    Question: if only one airmatic corner hangs could it be caused by a bad relay?
    As I understand a sagging corner could be due to a leaking strut, leaking air line, a defect level sensor or a faulty valve assembly. How are the solenoids in this valve assembly controlled? By the relay?
    My compressor works well for left side airstrut (rear only airsuspension), but right side doesn't lift. Would it be safe to say that the kompressor itself is ok?

    • @WaqasAhmed-kj8ue
      @WaqasAhmed-kj8ue  Před 7 lety +1

      Hi,
      If you are able to hear the compressor running, then it is not be the relay. If the plastic cover is removed under the bumper where the compressor is, then you can also touch the body of the compressor to see if it is running. In general it is reasonably loud without the cover.
      The compressor sound is like humming sound and last for few seconds upon start up to pressurize the system.
      Also if any of the other struts are rising and lowering then it is unlikely that it would be the relay. Hope this information help.
      Regards
      Waqas

    • @regularSenseAppeal
      @regularSenseAppeal Před 7 lety

      Thanks! I will fault check downstream from the compressor then. Compressor seems ok, usually turns on for a few seconds in the morning. When I took off front splash shied the air filter and hoses just feel on the ground. So pump probably doesn't last very long from all the grit and water that must have entered it.
      Another question: How did you clean the valves?

    • @gumersindodiez5179
      @gumersindodiez5179 Před 6 lety

      By removing and replacing fuse number 108, you can compare the working of the system with and without a working compressor. If, under both cases (with and without a fuse installed) the results are the same, then the problema is probably with the compressor.

    you are wrong.
    Pin 6 is Ground.
    and the numbers on the front are the Pin numbers for each valve

      i just tested it and Hollowman1701 is right, pin 1 is for valve 1 and 2 for 2 etc.. and 6 is ground or 0v. Don't forget thats 12V DC, don't mix them.
      My problem was valve 1 and 4 stuck with mud because my filter is out of age. i cleaned it multiple time and its working again. Good luck guys (not native english).

    Links=left
    Rechts=right
    Vorne=front
    Hinten=rear
    So HL=Hinten Links=rear left etc…

    The thing is, this is not a serviceable part. It seemed obvious that the part you have there is bad. Cleaning the part really won’t do anything and if it does, it would be a very short lived “fix x”

      You need a shop with the star machine to reset the suspension which is in lockout for those valves.
