  • From Doctor Who to Back to the Future, time travel is an idea that we can't seem to get enough of in science fiction, but this week we're discussing the science facts of bouncing around in time! Turns out time travel may not be as impossible as you think...

    i wouldn't travel forwards nor backwards given the chance because my current life is pretty breezy, although if I had to choose, the future would be hopefully more accepting of trans people thus id move forwards

    I remember reading about a variation on the billiard ball thought experiment, as well as its solution. Let's suppose the ball was a small bomb covered in triggers where an impact from any direction would set off the explosive. If you were to roll the ball towards the time portal, you would expect that the ball that emerges from the destination portal would smack into its past self, setting off the bomb and preventing it from ever reaching the portal. This would create a time paradox. Except what you would actually end up seeing is that a small chunk of the exploded ball flies out of the destination portal and hits the ball, causing it to detonate and send that chunk into the portal in the first place. You've therefore created a stable time loop.

    Getting caught up on some missed episodes, a treat after finishing exams. Your visual explanation of the dimensions is well done, it reignited my absolute obsession over E Abbott's Flatland of a word visualized in 2D. Love how the two of you break down concepts and speak so intelligently while making confusing concepts digestible for the listener. Been listening since 2020, thank you for creating this wonderful podcast!!

    the problem with understanding relativity is that you have to always differentiate between two systems: The moving system and the system that’s at rest. So when you use trigonometry to for example calculate the time that passed in the other system you need to know which time you have to multiply with what speed to get the right answer.

    One of the most frustrating time travel stories is from Evil Dead. In the second/third movies, the time travel is similar to how it works in Harry Potter. Ash was able to go back to time and save the Middle Ages people from the deadites, because it had already happened. He was there in the Middle Ages, he had always been and so it was his destiny to time travel back to the Middle Ages to experience the thing that had already happened. Great fucking idea, but then in the show, they go back in time to CHANGE the past, but the whole idea was that the past could not be changed. It's so frustrating, and then in season 3 when they go back we somehow end up on a completely different timeline? because the cabin is burned down, Pablo is alive, but the events from the original movies still happened, so what timeline are we on then? I will never get over how frustrating it is, I love the evil dead franchise to death but this whole plot point is just stupid, what they SHOULD'VE done, is that they go back in time to save Pablo, and try to prevent all the evil stuff from happening in the cabin, only to accidentally put all the pieces for the events of the original movie to happen into place, and then Ash finding out that HE is the cause of what happened there. That would've been a great way to make the time travel consistent imo, but anyway I'm ranting

    The one thing I'm bothered by is that you used the coin thing to explain the curving of space. That uses gravity so it's kind of a flawed analogy when you try to explain how gravity forms in an environment that initially doesn't have gravity.
    Better way is to think of placing a 2d grid on a curved surface, like a globe. When you draw two parallel straight lines on it, they eventually cross eachother. The same thing happens with space. The "flat" 3d plane of space becomes curved by the influence of an object. When another object going in a straight line enters the curved space, it's path stays straight in the 3d plane, but because the plane itself is curved, the path curves as well.

    • @SciGuys
      @SciGuys  Před rokem +2

      Not really a flawed analogy, both get the point across; I’d argue that the coin/sheet analogy leads into a more intuitive understanding of black holes

      Referencing Harry Potter doesn't put money in JK Rowling's pocket or indicate any support of her views/actions. We're incredibly clear & vocal about our stance on trans rights & the issues trans people are facing today. Even if one were to take any mention of Harry Potter as a promotion of the IP, we've also make it clear where we stand on supporting the brand.
      Personally, I'd view ignoring the existence of Harry Potter as virtue signalling, rather than any indication of one "doing better". I struggle to understand how referencing a plot point from Harry Potter materially affects the wellbeing of trans people in any way.
      Of course, we're dedicated to being open & inclusive, so if there's something we're missing please do let us know

    • @Disapproving_Welsh_Corgi
      @Disapproving_Welsh_Corgi Před rokem

      @@SciGuys while I agree it’s not direct promotion it does keep the IP in the main stream consciousness which does mean it’ll take longer for her to fade into obscurity.
      Also, for many trans people, even hearing HP references is just triggering at this point. I’d even go as far to call it a microaggression. I regularly facilitate a peer support group and it’s often something that comes up, that someone just had to turn off their favourite podcast or CZcams video and change activity because of a mention or reference because they’re tired of the constant reminder of she who shall not be named. In 5 or 10 years time it might be different but so many of us are experiencing such sever burnout right now and I know for me, when I listen to your podcast, I’m doing it because I want to unwind, not get reminded of how much money gets funnelled towards the genocide of trans people

      @@Disapproving_Welsh_Corgiold comment but harry potter has been a safe place for lgbt+ ppl for so many years before rowling ever came out as a TERF. ur effort to erase an entire culture around some fictional books is futile. i'm trans (non binary) myself, and every single trans person i know loves harry potter. if it's triggering for u, look for trigger warnings or seek therapy. this isn't something u can take away from everyone. harry potter isn't even rowling's anymore; we as a culture have claimed it from her years ago. sorry u have trouble separating art from the artist, but some of us can still feel an uninhibited amount of joy from these books
