I graduated from high school in 1983 so the 80’s was a wild time to be young! It’s sad to see how much has changed since then.
When I was a kid I wanted these portable TV so bad. I already have a 2000's era Casio LCD TV with electronic push button tuner up and down (boring), now just got a Watchman from Ebay for about 50 bucks and looks wonderful with analog tuning and listening to the static is so soothing.
Yeah, my family had one. I'm always the one carrying it since i'm the only boy of 5 siblings.
The video-only input on the smaller one is because it was also sold without the tuner as the monitor for Sony's WatchCam security camera.
Very interesting! Shortly after uploading this video, CZcams started recommending a bunch of videos on the Watchcam. Until this point, I had idea such a thing exists, but it makes sense.
I live in Tokyo. The irony of how hard it is to get the me of these here.
I have two watchmans, an FD-30A and FDL-220R. The latter being an LCD screen Watchman. I would love to get the FD-40A model one day. I remember seeing a yellow sports edition one at an antique store around 2016, I think it was probably $10. I didn't get it unfortunately, and yes I do kick myself for it!
I saw one at a local thiftstore but it was the lcd one

that screen bulge can happen if don't use appropriate batteries or don't have quite enough current supplied in the power adapter also
looks good.. can hardly notice when there is picture
Damn, good job with the adapter! I can't believe Sony chose to use that stupid connector rather than two standard RCA jacks. My FD-40 has a wonky tuner that let's you tune in either the video or the audio, but not both, so maybe I will attempt making an A/V adapter.
The adapter building was fun. Very bizzare connector, but not surprising given Sony's track record.
It sounds like yours needs an alignment in the tuner. I would have no idea whete to even start with that! I tried adjusting the picture controls inside on mine to get some better linearity and gave up when none of my screwdrivers would fit lol
Wait wait how are you getting channels off the antenna? What is the series of adapters plugged into? What “old analog signals?”

I have a bunch of modulators in my house to create a closed circuit cable-tv setup. We lost analog TV broadcast here over a decade ago.
