    It's so strange how they went from making crap like this to, at the very end of production of VCR's, upgrading to a somewhat better, if not still flawed, design. I have three EoL Funai based VCRs ranging from 2004 to 2016, one being a standalone VCR that does everything you'd need a VCR to do, and another being merely a HiFi version of this (it isn't all that good apart from being a decent CD player). Though, the 2013 - 2016 version is different in a lot of ways, but it was clearly made to withstand time a lot better than these due to it's rather sturdy metal body and frame, supports DVD and VCR playback through a modern HDMI cable, and it's VCR seems to be a lot less likely to eat tapes than these super cheap ones from before 2013 (not to mention VHS HiFi was standard). I can say at the very least, despite having this crappy period of ultra cheap combo units, Funai didn't end their VCR production on a sour note.

    This has the added benefit of an RF amplifier operating in common base mode, thus a low input impedance and high gain. If you're in the middle of nowhere this radio will work where others won't. (Your first radio that you recapped). They gave those radios like the Prominent away as a bonus when you signed up for Columbia House record club.

    Did you ever "update your method"? Have you made or can you make a video detailing best ways to do this? I have tons of old tapes with commercials on it from my country in my language (PAL), and I was wondering what the best way to do this was. Also maybe mention what tapes are the best and the differences and such? Since you mention it shortly in this video i mean :)

After a few tries it worked a treat, then I replaced the reel drive belt and then I sold it. :D

    That's why I always beep out capacitors in the faulty section of the circuit... I got an amplifier in for repair that had one channel bad and using one of those STK hybrids. I measured through the inputs and outputs and couldn't find the fault so I ordered one of those STKs. Which didn't fix it. After many many more hours of troubleshooting (the majority of a day) I found one shorted cap. The only one I must've overlooked when testing them all.

    That Electrohome TV has a corresponding MGA badged model in the US, so it is a "real" Mitsubishi (I guess the company in Singapore is either a contractor working for Mitsubishi or some sort of Mitsubishi subsidiary). And CPT=Chunghwa Picture Tube, which I think was part of Tatung. The Baycrest is a Fujitsu-General just like the other one on your channel, though made in Taiwan instead of Japan.

    Hey guy, when this JVC VCR was in production all other brands had the same amount of cheap plastic parts as did this JVC. So im not sure where you were going with your cheap comments. If you want sharp video..go to dvd players like i did. When I make transfers from vcr to dvd I don't use a computer of any kind. I simply got to a dvd recorder from the vcr. No need to by any kind of converters. Using converters degrades the video signal. Going direct from vcr to dvd recorder gets the best picture quality. I found the JVC VCRs S-HS series produces the best quality picture for transfers...period. I've tried Sony, Panasonic, Samsung,Phillips vcrs less quality of picture. I don't record on vcrs anymore like I use to starting in the early 80s. I used a Sony vcr to record a lot of shows from my old analog C/Ku band satellite system. Recording raw wide feeds. I had the GI 650i receiver.

    • @probnotstech
      @probnotstech Před 17 dny

      It's crappier build quality than the older JVCs, that's what I was getting at, and I stand by it. If you read about these Dynamic Drum models on old forum posts from when they were new, there's tons of complaints. Regarding capturing, DVD recorders just add an extra step for me, since my end goal is files on the PC. But I've since moved back to Hauppauge cards (currently using my old HVR-1800). The converters are convenient and usually provide an ok picture, but they throw away a lot of detail and very often crush bright or dark scenes completely. The only upside is they seem to do a really good job stabilizing video from bad tapes. To the point that I will have jitter on the CRT monitor, the output of a TBC, but the cheap converter will look rock solid. So I do save them for the really bad tapes - the "40 year old EP recordings on grocery store branded tapes that were stored in a basement" kinda recordings.

    • @JAKEBOOBOO-o6c
      @JAKEBOOBOO-o6c Před 17 dny

      @probnotstech ...ok you got some explaining here, what did you mean by Hauppauge card? You lost me. I'm not into today's computer terms. I don't own a PC or a Laptop. I don't read old forum post about this JVC vcr or the HR-S3500U unit because I had the units when they were in production. I never had problems as you indicated about the head drum. I got 8 good solid years of trouble free service from these vcrs. They have the best bright, crisp clear picture then the Sonys and Panasonic. I even own one of the first commercial vcr in the early 80s I had a RCA unit. This unit was one of those top load models.

    • @probnotstech
      @probnotstech Před 17 dny

      It's a tuner/capture card that goes inside a PC (model # is HVR-1800). They were originally sold as tuner cards so you could use your PC as a DVR (using Windows Media Center or similar software). That's what I used mine for about 15 years ago. Luckily it still works on my current PC. The card also has a composite and s-video input, that is useful for digitizing analog video. It's great that yours worked without problems. I'm just relaying my experience with this VCR, and what I read regarding other peoples' experiences when they were relatively new.

    First of all you don't connect this type of a vcr to today's flat screen. You won't get a good quality picture. Today's tvs can't handle standard definition. Your best bet is to get yourself a good Sony crt old school tv and connect this vcr and you'll see a big difference in picture quality. If your going to watch a lot of movies from a vcr..connect the original format tv..4:3 ratio Tv!

    How often should the video and/or audio heads be demagnetized, if ever?

    • @probnotstech
      @probnotstech Před 22 dny

      I've never heard of someone demagnetizing video heads in a VCR. The head drum is aluminum and the cores are ferrite, so there isn't much to become magnetized. I suspect you could risk causing damage by attempting this. The stationary heads (full erase, control track/audio, and audio erase) could become magnetized over time, but I think if you use the VCR to record periodically it should be fine. All of these heads will be fed a signal when recording, which should demagnetize them (my understanding is the AC bias signal should work to demagnetize them).
