Part 1 - With helpful tips and tricks, Todd takes a step by step walk through the beginning stages of tearing down the top end of a 1968 Triumph 650 (T120, TR6) motor. He also gives a short history lesson about the different Triumph motors and how to tell the differences between year ranges. He also talks about what to look for when buying a Triumph motorcycle and how to tell just by looking at the vin, casings, and heads and what parts you may need to restore your newest project.

Very cool of Todd and Tyler to put up these videos. Triumph twin engines are relatively simple but there are a lot of little things that you need to know. Most gearheads can take one apart and put it back together if they are careful, but there are a lot of little details and fragile parts. Sometimes seeing it done can help whether you have done it before or not!
watching these videos gives me the same vibe as the videos from matt from wheelsthroughtimes. very informative and very intelligent
Owned several pre-unit Triumphs in my misspent youth. Speed Twin, sprung-heal Thunderbird, Tiger 90. Never any of the good stuff, but easy enough to work on even as a spotty teenager with few tools. Ancient Turner design, and cheap as chips in the day (60's), when they were plentiful. Wish I had one now as a doer upper...

I can't thank you enough for this series - I have a 72 650 I'm getting ready to rebuild & put in a Triton - been collecting all the bits for a decade. It's even getting an ARD style forward mount Hunt mag - which I know you guys have seen as some of the only good pics of one mounted are from your shop. Anyway - haven't rebuilt a unit Triumph engine since I first joined YT and made this handle. This'll be a great refresher.

I love all old engines. Thanks magic Todd. I will definitely watch the entire series. I don't have a triumph now but had a great 1965 650 Bonny in an after market chopper frame. King and Queen seat and all. A true 1970's chopper. I bought the bike in 1987 for a whipping $250.00 and sold it about 3 years later for the same price. It also came and went with a spare motor. Thinking about it makes me want to kick my own ass. I have no idea who made the frame but it was stretched and raked to the hilt with a long ass springer front end.
Anyways, thank you and take care of that left hand. Don't know what happened but I will spare you the friction burn jokes. Lol

I can tell that this guy is a Wizard with Triumph engines because he has a black cat . Seriously though , I'm going to be watching every one of these vids over and over because I've just been GIVEN ( Yes that's right ) an old Triumph Motorbike in boxes . Haven't got it yet so I don't even know what it is .

The one I've got has a TR6 head on it. I bought this about 30 years ago and I haven't messed with it for over 20 years. I pulled out of the corner of the garage and decided that it will be my summer project. It's a 1971 T120R according the the VIN. I had it rebuilt a long time ago and have kept the cylinders in good shape over the years by kicking it once in awhile and keeping 3in1 oil in it. I got it started last week for the first time in 20 years.

@@lowbrowcustoms Question. My clutch lever is so hard to pull on. Is this normal? I've changed the plates and springs. The clutch rod isn't bent. I also put a new clutch cable on. It's always been hard to pull in. Have I just got spoiled with the new bikes being so easy to pull in.

I just scored a 1972 TR6R Tiger, I said scored because I got it for 250.00 bucks! Plus a 68 rolling basket case..no engine numbers though (they must not have been using engine numbers yet, ya think?) But the 72 is as unmolested as a Triumph gets, nice condition Lucas lens, Champion spark plug leads, all of the wiring is untouched, I don't think the headlight has ever been opened, nice gauges, tank, it's a keeper! The top end has been opened up, I'd rebuild it anyway,it's been sitting but it's as box stock as I've ever seen a Triumph that hasn't been restored. I'm getting ready to start on it soon as my Daytona 500 is a week away from it's complete rebuild, I love your tear down video, I hope the put it back together episodes are just as good and I can still afford internet until the final part! Thank you.

I have a 1968 triumph Daytona 500, that was my first motorcycle I bought it in 1983,and I still have it in my basement it’s been sitting for about 20 years now and when I got married 17 years ago my wife bought me a new 1988 Harley Davidson Sporty 883 hugger that had only 40 miles on it and it’s my daily rider! But it’s nothing like a Triumph?✌️👌
Great set of videos! I have a 1970 Bonnie & a 1964 TR6 that has been sitting for 27 years. I think I'm gonna start to restore one at a time. They have been in a flood so, for example, the rocker shafts are all locked up. I took the top end off & the lower end has been soaking in a tub of fuel oil. It's a long road ahead but I look forward to a rebuild. There will be more than just the motor to restore. Mark

Hey Todd this series is amazing. With it you can definitely rebuild your engine. However, to identify parts that should not be used because of excessive wear and how to measure if its within specs is not covered. Is there any video of checking parts like cams or crankshaft,etc.? Would be a shame if viewers were using these worn parts and not getting a good running bike.
Have a 1960 frame I want to buy I heard it would take the pre unit motor so is that the onley engine that will fit do they have a conversation for a newer motor

1:30 not sure it’s called a parallel twin because both pistons rise and fall at the same time, my 2002 CB500 is described as a parallel twin and the pistons are definitely 180deg apart. I think it’s just a way of saying ‘inline two‘. Good video, nice engine, great hair !

Hi, great series of videos. Most informative I've ever seen. Thank you for posting it. Question. I have a 1962 Triumph TR6 frame, ( I looked up the number stamped on the neck) dual downtubes in the front. What engines can I put in it without modifying the frame?

Just purchased Triumph thunderbird T6 650 cc with no engine number how is the best way to find the engine number, it has a raised block with no logo, the bike is a 1966 but after listening to your video i believe the engine could be a 1968, which makes it hard to determin the correct parts. can you help please

I have an off the wall question. Doesn't pertain exactly to Triumph other than the engine layout but I remember my Pop's Triumph Chopper. A lot of Triumphs got chopped and bobbed when I was a kid because they were cheap. I wonder if you could you substitute a Kawasaki 650 engine onto an Old School Chop. since they're now in the same niche that the Triumphs were in the '70's?

i WOULD SUGGEST UNDOING THE SMALLER BOLTS AND NUTS FIRST AS i HAVE SEEN THE VALVE SPRINGS UNDER LOAD BRAKE THE LUGS THAT THE 3 BOLTS UNDER THE ROCKERBOXES AND STRIP THE THREADS ON THE 2 7/16 BOLTS ONTOP SO ALWAYS UNDO OR LOSSEN THEM FIRST BEFORE THE HEAD STEADY BOLTS lAST, THANKS

I bought a '67 TR6 650 at an auction and can't start it because the compression is so high. It turns over easy with the plugs out but if I put them back in I can jump on the kickstarter and my 150 lbs won't move it past top dead center on a compression stroke. Does any company make lower compression ratio pistons? This thing is harder to start than a 900 Sportster.

I love Triumphs. The first bike I bought back in 1979 was a 1976 T140V. Plenty of miles and plenty of pussy were done on that bike. Had a couple more Triumphs, two BSA's and two Harleys since. I'm looking for a decent 60's era Triumph now and I'll sell the Harley when I get one. Great vid, by the way.
