    I had an 86 MR2 and as far as oversteer is concerned, such an easy fix that I learned earlier as a mechanic, this applies to and cars or trucks. Drop the front tire pressure by no more than 2 psi, or in combination, raise the rear 1 psi and drop the front 1 psi. My MR2 did have a slight oversteer and this fix had it running in any of my driving conditions as solid as a rock - I did not baby it whatsoever. This method always worked for me over decades with all of my vehicles. I also used stick Bridgestones which far out performed the sad Dunlops from the factory.

      I accidentally left the word lightweight out there too! I always wanted a Mk2 MR2 until I drove a Vspec Roadster, it just felt right but don't worry, I also owned a Caring II XL at the same time so fully appreciate that era of Toyota, they just didn't do lightweight cars at that time.

  • @roland9367
    @roland9367 Před 7 lety +8

    Nice video! Just some things to add (I own the MK1 MR2 and have owned several 2 litre Celica models)
    - The 154bhp 3S-GE (1990 to 1994) is a good engine but can use quite some oil because of bad valve seals (which are replaceable)
    - The 175bhp 3S-GE (1994 to 1998) is of much better quality. I owned a Celica with that engine and drove it up to almost 300.000km without any oil usage, and I wasn't easy on it. Without any breakdowns.
    - The 3S-GE is more common in Europe. In Europe we did not get the 5S-FE and others.
    - I think all MR2's need around 15 litres of coolant due too the front radiator and mid-engine. Yes getting the air out should be carefully done. Also the electrical thermal switch to turn on the electric fans might be broken and you won't notice it until your first trackday! (because you don't need the electric fans on the road)
    - Overall, the video doesn't name the general things of driving a mid-engine car. It is fantastic, and I don't think it gets any cheaper (also in therms of low running costs!) to drive a mid-engined car. But it can be dangerous enough. I mean, even if you have a later model it doesn't mean snap off oversteer doesn't happen. The weight distrubution is different (it isn't a perfect 50%) and if the car is going into oversteer, there is a lot of weight coming around where other normal RWD cars are much lighter at the back.
    - The 2.0 Turbo is obviously the fastest. And if you have the 245bhp 3S-GTE, it is easy to get it up to 300bhp. But then please stop because everything gets expensive beyond that point!
    - There are LSD diffs available, both original Toyota (I think the turbo gearbox) as well as aftermarket ones.
    - You haven't mentioned all the crazy people who do engine swaps to V6 engines! I mean, it is a good platform for it.
    Including the powerful 280bhp 2GR-FE engine, which is the same as in the Lotus Evora! So that allows you to create your own cheap Evora.
    When looking at the other generations: Both the MK1 and MK3 MR2's are much lighter than this MK2. So if you are looking for a lightweight racer instead of high power, the MK1 or MK3 would be better. But the MK1 is a rustbucket. (I know, I have one)

  • @joshuarosen6242
    @joshuarosen6242 Před 5 lety +10

    It's interesting to hear that "earlier" (i.e. '93) cars suffered from snap oversteer. I owned an N reg MR2 so it would have been '95 MY and I managed to spin it twice. The second time I spun it 540 degrees and still didn't hit the side of the road. It spun like a top and only had 170BHP. It did turn in quite nicely though.
    I had it for about three years from new and always loved the look. It was a bit of a sheep in wolf's clothing as it was nowhere near as fast as it looked but then I'd only been driving for a few years so that's probably just as well. After two and a half years my wife got pregnant so we swapped it for a 328i but I still remember how sad I felt to see it go.

    I have a 91 and I just have to say that the whole snap oversteer thing is bull. Last year I was hanging the rear end out in the snow/rain all the time and never had a problem. If you can drive, you don't have to worry.

    • @DamfinoMR2
      @DamfinoMR2 Před 6 lety +1

      Tried to get my 91 to snap on me and had no luck either. As a matter of fact, without the rear engine bay brace, it tends to slide easier which is what you want when trying to control your traction loss. If you lose traction and the rear is too rigid, then you will snap oversteer.

    • @DamfinoMR2

    • @idiotamerica6422
      @idiotamerica6422 Před 4 lety

      I think the snap oversteer problem only happens at high speeds, since there’s more weight weighing down the car on the rear + the mid engine layout + RWD = oversteer

    Had a '94 MR2 Turbo back when I was studying in America for 6 years while taking my degree at Berkeley and it's an amazing thing to drive. With a small tweak with the stock turbo, I was able to bump the power up to about 262HP and with the upgrade of brake sets and a new titanium headers and a whole full set of Tein Super Street suspension setup, it was a super great machine to drive and it sounds wickedly good with the blow off valve throwing pressures behind you due to the midship and I never had issue with the snap oversteers.

    I've wanted one of these since I was about 12 years old. It's crazy to see how much prices for these vehicles in the US have skyrocketed. They're anywhere from 8k-26k now. I fear by the time I save enough for one they'll be running more in the 12k-30k range. Hell, by that time the only ones left for purchase may end up being ones exported from Japan...obviously not the most affordable or convenient option. I could potentially cave...RHD would be pretty neat to have. It would cost nearly 26-30k though when all is said and done!

    to fix the steering radius, swap the steering wheel with a smaller one, you can use newer wheels like the celica gts one from the early 2000s. Also beware of exhaust manifold warp, and oil leaks. Speaking from experience the worst problem ive had since owning one is that my 3rd gear synchro is failing, but other than that it's my favorite car to own, fun to drive and everyone always asks me about it when im stopped in parking lots or gas stations.

    • @JaycubL

      There is no real difference, it's like grams vs ounces. Makes no difference whatsoever, other than it is convenient if someone uses a unit that you are accustomed to.

    • @guigui045
      @guigui045 Před 7 lety +5

      No. If you want to be exact, you should use a force and not a weight. A newton is not the same thing as a pound.

      ^ this guy remembers physics.

    • @JaycubL
      @JaycubL Před 7 lety +4

      guigui045 Weight is force. While kilograms are a unit of mass, pounds are actually only a unit of weight and not mass (weight varies with local gravity). So while yes kilogram-meters would not be a technically correct thing to use, "pound feet" are fine and a valid and accepted unit of torque.

    • @sigmaprojects
      @sigmaprojects Před 7 lety

      ***** In the US it's because the construction workers are just used to it. So materials are sold in imperial units because they're just used to it makes it easy for the workers. Also we use 1 gallons a lot and the equivalent metric wouldn't be as easily to monetize. If you're an engineer you'll use metric, that's for sure. For everyday talking we use imperial. Oh also some of our sports still use imperial, like American football is a 100 yard field, so it's something people easily can visualize. It's in all honesty, just something we're used to.
      I freaking hate measuring in imperial units (what we call standard here) since it's always in a fraction, drives me nuts. When I'm designing anything, I use metric since it's easier to work with for me.

    Why would you get an MR2 when you can buy a Pontiac Fiero? They are quite cheap, and they are also mid-engined with RWD. They also feature pop-up headlights. But the real kicker is that you will never have body rust because of plastic body panels.

      If the MR2 never existed, we'd all be madly in love with the Fiero, and there are still a few really dedicated people out there, but the MR2 is just better in nearly every single way.

    • @killerkon141

    • @CaroFDoom

    • @killerkon141
      @killerkon141 Před 7 lety +2

      tires do have a lot to do with grip, yes, but the fiero (at least the '88) had a more advanced suspension design that didn't incorporate the macpherson strut. the MR2 has a slightly favorable weight distribution, but the wider track of the fiero kept it more planted and less prone to snap oversteer.
